After disaster after Salzberg and a very predictable humilation over the Chequers Deal which the ERG reject, moderate Brexiteers reject, Remainers reject and the EU reject....

May does a press conference...

...which is delayed by a power shortage inside No. 10.

And....

Also watching Andrew Marr. Angry letter in the Telegraph from local Tory party chairs demanding TM attends a meeting of the National Conservative Convention at conference to listen to their grievances about Chequers.

prettybird · 23/09/2018 11:10

Maybe Norman Smith mistakenly typed a "t" rather than a "w" in that Tweet. Wink

Culture secretary drops hologram as Tories pray for glitch-free conference

It would have at least have woken up those who were nodding off at the back. But Jeremy Wright, the culture secretary, has axed plans to give his speech to the Conservative Party conference as a hologram.

The idea was hatched by his predecessor at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Matt Hancock, before he was promoted to health secretary.

Hancock was told he would be compared to Arnold Rimmer from Red Dwarf.

I suppose a 'way out' for the EU in UK (3M) and UK in EU (1.5M) would be to declare the UK a 'war zone' so the 3M get repatriated and 1.5M can seek asylum.

www.theguardian.com/business/2018/sep/22/rotterdam-prepared-for-worst-after-brexit

This is a very good article about Rotterdam preparing for a No Deal Brexit. Suspect it captures the mood of much of Europe - not angry, accepting the result, admitting that it is causing them problems BUT in absolutely prioritising the Single Market.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/09/2018 12:16

Leclerc The 1 million UK expats have more protections and I don't expect the EU to be vindictive towards us, regardless of how exasperating the UK govt clusterfuck is

Under EU rules, derived from UN regs, any 3rd country citizen has a right to apply for permanent residence, (in their EU country of residence only),
provided they have been resident for at least 5 years, are self-supporting, no criminal record
Covers immediate family who have also been resident and self-supported by the family.

They can participate in the state health insurance, pension etc just like EU citizens

They would lose the right to vote in EP elections, also that of FOM to other E27 countries

BigChocFrenzy · 23/09/2018 12:18

Individual countries may also have language requirements for the main wage-earner
The EP has a move to make residence for UK expats easier, such as waiving these, but they would have to do so before Brexit, to avoid a hiatus

surfer has suggested in ‘the other place’ arranging a London meet up. I have said that I’m happy to organise if enough people are interested or if peeps want to meet up after the march on 20th. Meet up venues are arranged via FB or PMs to minimise the chance of loons muscling in. Just to verify my credentials, I have been on here for 9 years and have been to several meet ups.
In a former life, I was MissHooliesCardigan and have also been MrBloomsMarrow and AndyWarholsBanana.

Editorial from Le Monde - if you copy into Google Chrome it will produce a comprehensible translation

www.lemonde.fr/idees/article/2018/09/21/brexit-l-art-du-deal_5358226_3232.html

The comments should disabuse anyone who thinks that the "ordinary citizens" of Europe are on the side of plucky Brits. The editorial asks for compromise - the comments are pretty much "get lost"

1tisILeClerc · 23/09/2018 14:51

Le Monde gets a better class of 'comments' from it's readers than the UK 'Sun'.

PineappleSunrise · 23/09/2018 15:28

Regarding that link from Red about the NCA dropping its investigation into a particular set of Russian money laundering - it occurs to me that there are all sorts of way of halting investigations. One way is to throttle funding into policing so that there is never enough people & investment to go into everything, so some more straightforward cases are pursued at the expense of more complex ones.

prettybird · 23/09/2018 15:46

The Le Monde comments were interesting. Demonstrating that its readers had far more awareness of UK and Irish history (let along knowledge of the EU) than most Leave voters what an indictment . Hmm

And most of them did differentiate between les anglais and the rest of us Grin

Pro EU demo at labour conference looks huge.

My mum was there! she said it was very good. But now she can't find her way back to the car park...

woman11017 · 23/09/2018 15:53

Halo to pretzels mum Smile Sight of the end of march with 'Hey Jude' playing makes me v jealous. I love Liverpool.

Icantreachthepretzels · 23/09/2018 16:09

Not the welsh though. There wasn't one mention of Wales in 58 posts. There were a few that talked about the composite parts of the UK ... but they were all missing the Cymru quarter of our little land.

No one ever remembers Wales...

Mistigri · 23/09/2018 16:13

There is much to criticise about the French education system, but I think you'd find that a large majority of regular Le Monde readers studied both a foreign language (usually English) and modern history to at least age 18 and in many cases until the end of their higher education studies. My DD has 4 hours pw of English (literature plus UK/American history/politics/current affairs) as an obligatory part of her course.

1tisILeClerc · 23/09/2018 16:21

I remember Wales. If the houses weren't so stupidly expensive I might be living there now.

prettybird · 23/09/2018 16:22

Sad IcantreachthePretzels true - but I suppose in the context, Wales couldn't come into the category "but they didn't vote for Brexit but England did"

I know that's harsh and there were many Welsh who didn't vote for it, just as there were some Scots and Norn Irish that did

Mistigris - you're right, the French Baccalaureat system is much better at ensuring a broad base of education than the English one (and I say English deliberately as the Scottish education is much broader to a higher level and no, I don't know much about the Welsh system although I believe that it is more closely aligned with the English "A" Level system, ditto with the NI educational system )

@DKShrewsbury
Have had numerous messages this weekend from Constituents who voted Remain now wanting speedy withdrawal from EU due to appalling conduct of @eucopresident and his fellow unelected officials towards our PM. More and more people realising our long term interest not in EU #Brexit

Really? Hmm

I can see this line getting trotted out a lot over the coming days.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 23/09/2018 16:26

I’m getting increasingly despondent about being one of les anglais Sad

prettybird · 23/09/2018 16:38

Babooshka An independent Scotland will welcome refugees the English - as long as you want to contribute constructively to the building of a strong and confident new nation and member of the EU Wink (The 3 month Rule may well apply Wink)

No moaning Leavers allowed Grin

There is even a pro-Indy group (which a MN friend is a member of) called "English Scots for Yes". She moved up here in advance of the Indyref so that she could vote in it and wouldn't dream of moving back! Grin

Whoever this dude is they need to check some FACTS first.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/09/2018 16:45

Hi plum/MrsH I hope you are doing better now

BigChocFrenzy · 23/09/2018 16:45

German high school students early this year were asked in an exam essay question (don't know if it was for English or Current Affairs)
to suggest a Brexit deal that would solve the NI conundrum, while considering UK govt statements on this

The most popular answer was a referendum in NI on what kind of border they thought best, land or sea, or a referendum there on the draft WA border backstop

Amazing that German school kids have this amount of sophistication, analysis and general knowledge

Maybe May or her successor could copy this idea, because it seems better to me than a 2nd UK ref - completely justifiable, because it is not repeating the Ref 1 question

So, ask those people whose border it will be, what border they would prefer, rather than just accept the views of the DUP - the Party of NO - who don't even represent all Unionists.
