Boris Johnson is clearing the decks for a leadership challenge.

I guess that means that the Brexit we get all depends on what George, Michael and Boris decide over lunch and how good Operation Yellowhammer is.

Downing Street said "The prime minister was not consulted about the votes of the tory MEPs before the vote." Channel 4 news. Hmm
Judith Sargentini (Dutch MEP who proposed the censure motion) Halo

Westminstenders: Operation Yellowhammer 1q
BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2018 19:48

Huh ?
I read that the MEPs were instructed by the "govt" to vote that way, to gain Hungary's support in Brexit negotiations
By Raab then ? The ERG ?

OR
maybe that's a weasel answer - giving an order is not "consulting" the people being ordered
Classic No 10 - scuttling back from embarassment after bad decisions

woman11017 · 12/09/2018 20:01

I can't post clips, but I'm sure that's what Snow said.......yep, she wants to do bilateral air and road deals for 'public safety'. Shock

James Patrick's muttering about emergency legislation again........

Peregrina · 12/09/2018 20:08

Presumably May could disassociate the Tory MEPs from the right wing fascist group, since Cameron was the one who arranged for them to join. I don't think May is a fascist, I think she's blinkered and doesn't question, but when challenged as then, tries to wriggle out.

HermioneGoesBackHome · 12/09/2018 20:08

The MEP vote was a short term action to try and put pressure in the EU (look at what we can do/how much if a pain we can be) as well as trying to get support form some countries (aka Hungary bit maybe also Poland etc...)

The fact they aren’t feeling uncomfortable doing so is more worrying imo because they’ve basically said thatbthe Conservative Party has no issue with the far right (or is it that they are actually well and truly the far right??)

HermioneGoesBackHome · 12/09/2018 20:10

The immigration policy implemented by TM (which is still been implemented with great keenness) is the type of policy I wouod expect form the far right.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2018 20:13

May is desperate & bungling, not a fascist
We are seeing how low she will stoop to help her govt survive a little longer

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2018 20:17

Aviation and certification of drivers and road vehicles are EU competencies, like trade deals

  • the EU commission deals with these and individual member states can't make separate agreements
Buteo · 12/09/2018 20:17

To go back to WW2 - plenty of German scientists ended up working for the MoD after the war - and not always through choice.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2018 20:20

Member countries can take action in an emergency,
but only the UK is facing an emegency; the others are just facing inconvenience

E27 members - and Barner - are likely to reply:

"Failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on ours"

Peregrina · 12/09/2018 20:24

May is desperate & bungling, not a fascist

I agree with this, but with her bungling and lack of vision, she apparently does not realise that she is playing into the hands of the fascists/Nazis.

Peregrina · 12/09/2018 20:28

I would like to laugh - take back control, easy deals etc. So now instead of having one body to deal with road haulage and another to deal with aviation, we propose to have 27 deals for each of them.

HermioneGoesBackHome · 12/09/2018 20:31

I have a question for you.
What is making you think she isnt actually leaning towards the far right/facist?
I see plenty of actions/decisions form her that are very much in the fascist/totalitarian line.

Peers seek to send hard Brexit amendments back to Commons
Peers hope to use audacious parliamentary manoeuvre to offer MPs chance to strike out controversial amendments

But Smith’s team have received advice from experts in parliamentary procedure that they can help to reopen debate about the amendments, by attaching them to a separate piece of legislation – the trade bill, also currently passing through the Lords.

In cooperation with Conservative, Liberal Democrat and crossbench peers, they will table a series of amendments on Wednesday evening, including the four ERG ones; and another aimed at reopening the issue of a customs union.

If they win the backing of enough peers at the legislation’s report stage, expected to be in November, the amendments will be passed back to the House of Commons, to give MPs another chance to vote them down.

Unless I'm mistaken these include the ones Jo Swinson was screwed over and Tim & Vince were too busy dropping the ball for.

politics is not a game says TM several times since the referendum

Unless the tories are playing the game it would appear after that vote.

1tisILeClerc · 12/09/2018 20:40

Mr Junker, in his 'state of the EU' speech has already slapped Raab's wrist for trying to contact EU27 directly for transport. I think it was widely applauded.

Peregrina · 12/09/2018 20:41

My impression is that Theresa May isn't consciously leaning towards fascism and would probably be horrified to be called thus. But then there were her Home Office policies.....hmm. I think she is extremely ignorant of history also.

It's a bit like the thread talking about the targetting of disabled people being reminiscent of the Third Reich. Some posters are extremely angry that this comparison is being made, many of us are saying 'be aware, this could happen'. It happens when people don't question and don't use their eyes and ears, and I think May would come into that category.

woman11017 · 12/09/2018 20:59

@tnewtondunn
Interesting. More than 80 Tory MPs turned up to the @ToryReformGroup reception tonight. This, I am told, has become the unofficial Anyone But Boris group - and is now the same size as the ERG.

oho, Lords to the rescue ?
That could cause a constitional crisis on a topic as controversial as Brexit

At least there is no time for the PM to flood the house with new Brexiter peers.

woman11017 · 12/09/2018 22:02

Who knows, Mrs8Confused
That Applebaum article posted by PineappleSunrise earlier is a corker.
“The post-1989 liberal moment—this was the exception,” Stathis Kalyvas told me. Polarization is normal. More to the point, I would add, skepticism about liberal democracy is also normal. And the appeal of authoritarianism is eternal."
We've just happen to be around during a political burp I suppose.

Buteo · 12/09/2018 23:03

oho, Lords to the rescue ?

Oh, the irony of the unelected telling us what to do Smile

Alex Wickham @alexwickham
EXC: Analysis by 21 local authorities warns Brexit could lead to billions of pounds of funding shortfalls, infrastructure projects unable to be signed off, threats to public services and rises in homelessness, poverty and unemployment

Fenland council’s corporate risk register gave the risk of failing to take action to prepare for Brexit a score of 25/25. That rating is reserved for items with the potential for “catastrophic impact” and equal to the threat posed by a natural disaster

In Lancashire, the council is reporting that projects are unable to be signed off, and there are widespread concerns about funding black holes

[RTB: 10,000 in Blackburn]

Stark warning in Leave-voting Bolsover, where the council says that unless funding and contingency plans are guaranteed they will be “unable to effectively support local communities”

Harrow council lists the risks of Brexit as “increases in levels of poverty, homelessness and health inequalities… potential cut-backs in services, full regeneration plan potentially not viable… negative economic downturn in local economy”

Analysis produced by Cheshire East council found that of the top 100 companies in the area, 14 firms contributing almost £1 billion to the local economy were assessed as being at “high risk” because of Brexit. 43 firms at medium risk.

2,000 fewer jobs forecast in Hackney, several councils report evidence of health and social care workers leaving the UK, two councils say housebuilding threatened, childcare hit in Brent

Most damningly for the government, the service director at Cornwall council - at the centre of the Brexit debate - says: “Local government was promised a seat at the table. It is not clear even where the table is never mind what the seat is.”
