Only 1 rule.
No c&p posts a mile long, they’re just boring & no one reads them.
Keep it short, sweet, & to the point.

Yes we ve also a few local shops across 3 villages with a combined population of say 15k max.

Your blue print to feed the nation doesn't work with a population of 60m ish... but so long as you are ok.

Thecrabbypatty · 10/09/2018 13:13

I'm sorry but you are deluded if you think importing all our food is a good idea.

topcat1980 · 10/09/2018 13:14

But we aren't saying that.

The UK imports about 45% of its food, actually the lowest amount since the late 60s. But it in no way could be self reliant and hasn't been since the industrial revolution.

Thecrabbypatty · 10/09/2018 13:17

Importing food keeps the third world in poverty because it makes more economic sense to sell it to the highest bidder and starves the local populations who can't afford to buy food produced in their country. Our current system is unsustainable for us as customers as it is for producers. It's also terrible for the environment.

UnnecessaryFennel · 10/09/2018 13:21

How lovely for you, crabby. Sounds fab.

And for those of us who aren't lucky enough to have thriving, independent butchers, bakers, fishmongers and greengrocers on our doorsteps, or for those of us who couldn't afford to buy from them even if we did? What should we do? Spam all round, I suppose.

Still, you're alright, eh?

Thecrabbypatty · 10/09/2018 13:30

It's not a case of alright Jack. I'm saying the food currently produced in the uk will not be affected by brexit. And before brexit the government was trying to reduce air miles and encourage people to buy seasonal foods rather than have unacceptable expectations of out of season food all year round. As soon as brexit happened all of a sudden this is a terrible idea? Why has this changed? I'm not an eco warrior but it actually is cheaper to buy locally because you don't pay for transport. And if there is a negligible price difference on some items at least I know its paying the wages of people around me and not the bonuses of tesco CEOs. If the remainers are right and everything goes to hell in a hand art there will be more local produce shops popping up in a town near you. Supply and demand and the free market adapts.

UnnecessaryFennel · 10/09/2018 13:38

No one here would disagree with you about food miles and buying seasonally etc., at least not in principle.

But a) the luxury of buying from an independent butcher is not open to many people and b) the the level of food currently produced in the UK is - and always has been - way below the levels required to feed the population.

As for 'supply and demand and the free market adapts' - er, no. No it doesn't, not for this issue. And it's that kind of airy-fairy, dismissive, 'oh it'll all be fiiiiine' thinking that has got us into this fucking mess in the first place. It might be fine for you. It is highly likely to be fucking shit for a lot of others.

gnomeisland · 10/09/2018 13:40

But most of our imported food comes from other EU countries....

Thecrabbypatty · 10/09/2018 13:44

This is a light hearted thread. Personally I'm happy that local food producers might stand a chance against the supermarkets after brexit. Silver linings and all that. I really don't know why you rampant remainers are on this thread, you have plenty of brexit thumping threads to lurk on.

bellinisurge · 10/09/2018 13:50

@Thecrabbypatty - your worldview is lovely. But to there from here is hellish for an awful lot of people, particularly the unprepared and the people already relying on food banks. If Leave had explained that, I would be more ok about it. I'm a prepper, I'm in a slightly better position than most to deal with it.
But the thought of those poor saps who were conned into voting for what is essentially a hedge fund manager's wet dream makes me shiver.

bellinisurge · 10/09/2018 13:52

You want lighthearted? Make your own fun offline.

Hazardswan · 10/09/2018 13:54

We don't produce enough food for everyone in the country. Shopping local is great when the food exists and it's affordable.

UnnecessaryFennel · 10/09/2018 13:55

By all means, crabby, if facts are making you sad and uncomfortable, I shall leave you to enjoy your hand-reared, organic unicorn steaks with all the other happy Leavers.

Talkstotrees · 10/09/2018 13:58

I’m here because I was asked to get behind Brexit. I came here trying to find out what there is to get behind. It’s obviously not my only potential source of information.

I stayed because I enjoy reading many of the posts.

Independent shops will always be more expensive (and less convenient) than supermarkets. Saying otherwise is Confused. I do agree that they’re often better in other ways, for those lucky enough to have access.

Hazardswan · 10/09/2018 14:01

Or if these facts make you sad you could try contacting your MP to discuss your conerns or sign the final say petition.

Talkstotrees · 10/09/2018 14:02

Oh, and I’ve found no reason to get behind Brexit (yet), in fact it’s looking even worse than anticipated.

Thecrabbypatty · 10/09/2018 14:04

I reiterate my last point. What are you hoping to achieve by droning on about the potential negatives while refusing to acknowledge ANY of the positives. You don't know what's going to happen any more than I do so stop acting like your version of brexit is any more realistic then the people who disagree with you.

UnnecessaryFennel · 10/09/2018 14:07

Perhaps we just need to be more 'lighthearted', Talkstotrees?

bellinisurge · 10/09/2018 14:09

@Thecrabbypatty - hope for the best prepare for the worst : prepper motto. It's not my job to find the fab in this. It's my job not to freak out my family but quietly make sure we are all ok.
You find the fab if you want to. Don't criticise people who can't see it.
Like Santa Claus.

Thecrabbypatty · 10/09/2018 14:10

UnnecessaryFennel shake your pom poms / shake your stockpiled cans of tuna. Do what you like, it's happening. I'll shake my locally produced carrots to that!

UnnecessaryFennel · 10/09/2018 14:10

What are the positives, crabby?

Talkstotrees · 10/09/2018 14:12

Where are the positives? I came looking for them but was told I was too late. No one wants to repeat these positives yet many still insist I should get behind it.

Potential postives have to have potential the UK producing all its own food is not potentially possible

Try saying that after a few glasses of Brexit Bathtub Gin Grin

Thecrabbypatty · 10/09/2018 14:23

Yawns and checks watch so end of the long story here, you are busy cross referencing your prepping excel spreadsheet and crafting your tin foil helmets, while I'm here carrying on as normal, like most people. Exciting isn't it.
