Only 1 rule.
No c&p posts a mile long, they’re just boring & no one reads them.
Keep it short, sweet, & to the point.

I thought Margarate Thatcher was very pro EU?

On her terms @surferjet . She knew a good deal when she saw it and got the rebate. To call her pro-EU misrepresents her.As does calling her a wonderful person.

surferjet · 16/09/2018 19:09

& we are only 1 out of 28 other countries - if we vote against something but the other 27 don’t, we just have to suck it up.
Now we don’t have to influence anyone, we can please ourselves.

She’d have been a remainer for sure.

OP posts:
Quietrebel · 16/09/2018 19:12

Not true. Now we'll have to try and influence the rest of the world. And the rest of the world happens to trade in blocs- so ... where will we belong?

bellinisurge · 16/09/2018 19:12

We only have to convince the other WTO countries now. So easy. They love us.Confused

surferjet · 16/09/2018 19:15

So you’re saying once we leave the EU no one will trade with us?

The EU parliament makes proposals which were debated by all the MEPs. Once the wording is thrashed out each country had a veto so could opt out of the rule/law.
Norway TAKES rules but has no MEPs in the debating chamber but can lobby to try and steer other countries MEPs to put Norway's case.
I believe the UK has the most 'opt outs' of any of the EU members.

Quietrebel · 16/09/2018 19:25

No, just that there won't be any easy deals- they will be worse and harder to negotiate- and for that reason (among others) I think leaving is a bad idea.

1tisILeClerc · 16/09/2018 19:28

Of course other countries will trade with the UK, it is just going to get a lot more expensive as the 'free trade' rules will be ripped up.
Anything the UK makes and hopes to sell outside the UK will have to be made to the standards of the country it is selling to and will have to pay to have it certified. (more money).
Apart from certifications, the UK can't simply say 'no tariffs'. Well it CAN but at the point where the UK buys stuff in, it must also SELL with no tariff, which means effectively no profit and at that point we would be competing with China and India with huge resources and cheap labour. Pay in the UK would have to go DOWN massively which would hit hard as the UK standard of living is expensive. What you gain on the swings, you lose on the roundabouts. Unfortunately the likes of Mogg and co are only telling us the first half, either deliberately, or in many cases because they have no idea themselves.

lljkk · 16/09/2018 19:32

WTO terms: it's not clear what quotas UK will get.

I don't understand the quotas thing, either, but NZ is fervently opposing our application. US & Australia also objecting.

Bearbehind · 16/09/2018 19:33

if we vote against something but the other 27 don’t, we just have to suck it up.

And how many times did that actually happen.

The truth is successive governments blamed the EU for unpopular ideas they would have chosen themselves and took the credit for those which went down well.

Just look at TM earlier this year claiming the abolishion of the credit card card was her idea.

frumpety · 16/09/2018 19:37

Back from work , had a lovely day ( a rare thing in the NHS), walked into my house and DH had decided to re-organise the kitchen cupboards, some of which no longer close properly and the worktops are full of his 'not sure where to put it' stuff, there is a similarity with Brexit there somewhere Grin

So now I am in the foulest of moods whilst trying to get everyone's work and school stuff clean for tomorrow , because although DH is gadget mad he still hasn't grasped the intricate and dare I say it, magical workings of your average washing machine, 17 years and three washing machines after first getting together !

surferjet · 16/09/2018 19:38

Spain, France, Portugal, Cyprus, Italy - they rely on us for tourism. - particularly Spain. If it wasn’t for the UK Spain would disappear, so I doubt they’ll give us any grief.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 16/09/2018 19:41

Apparently Nz objections relate to our assuming they want to cut and paste the deal they currently have with us as an EU member. It commits them to a certain size export deal with us and reduced export to the EU. Unsurprisingly they want to look at expanding what they export to the EU rather than just selling that amount to the UK. What with NZ being a pesky independent country that wants to decide for itself what trade deals it makes. We are a big and important market for NZ lamb but that doesn't mean we offer the best deal. Particularly with tariffs not yet being negotiated.

bellinisurge · 16/09/2018 19:43

@surferjet - you do know that Germans go on holiday too. And people from other EU countries.

surferjet · 16/09/2018 19:43

So go ahead Mediterranean countries. If you don’t want us or our money we’ll holiday at home & bring millions back to our seaside resorts.

OP posts:
surferjet · 16/09/2018 19:44

I’d say we make up a large % or tourism to Spain & Portugal.

Nonsense, if we wish to trade, we 'll have to abide by rules eg try selling beef to France if its not breed to EU standards (these rules will be set by the EU with zero input from the UK, soi do agree with JRM on this, the UK will become a vassal state.

As for the EU, UK has voted against many environmental polices, one of the most recent was the ban on neonicotinoids, which the rest of the EU wanted banning years ago, the UK held out.

Peregrina · 16/09/2018 19:46

I question that. I think they would be very glad to get rid of the lager louts and the stag and hen parties. Since the collapse of Communism the populations of East Europe have now more freedom to travel and are becoming wealthier, so I could see Spain pitching its business towards them.

bellinisurge · 16/09/2018 19:47

@surferjet - but it rains here a lot. That's why people go on holiday to the sun. I too think that tourism will be sorted fairly quickly but that doesn't mean there won't be increased costs, visas etc. Have you got your international driving license and your health insurance before you travel. And will you use your mobile phone?

surferjet · 16/09/2018 19:51

You think Spain would survive without UK tourists?
It’s the larger louts & stag & hen parties that keep them going.
And it’s quite sweet that you think Germans, or any other European people don’t drink. < what planet are you people on? >

OP posts:
frumpety · 16/09/2018 19:56

Surfer the whole of Europe holidays in the holiday places in Europe , not just us , also the Chinese and the Russians, seriously they will be fine without us. See you in Blackpool then ?

Peregrina · 16/09/2018 19:57

No one said anything about Germans not drinking....

I don't think they have the same stag/hen traditions though.

Certain parts of Spain would be hit, but I think there are enough potential tourists in the world for them to adapt, and adapt quite quickly if they choose.
