Brexit

Is a No Deal exit really a possibility?

StorminaBcup · 23/08/2018 17:46

Is there really a risk of a No Deal for Britain leaving Europe or are they making it sound even more of an utter shambles (if that's possible), so that whatever deal we leave with won't be quite so bad in comparison?

"No deal" will leave 99.99% of the country worse off for a long time

sadly the 0.01% includes Jacob Rees Mogg, Boris Johnston, Lord Rothermere, the Barclay Twins, Richard Desmond, Aaron Banks and Nigel Farage.

AnnieKenney · 23/08/2018 20:21

Theresa May inherited a tricky situation but made it worse through her own actions. The leave vote could have been interpreted any number of ways but she chose to cave in to the right wing of her party because she wanted to hang on to power. Every MP I have worked with (a fair number) fails at the test of what is the right thing to do vs what will maintain my power. The UK is still acting as if the EU will give them special privileges. By the time they finally cotton on to the fact that it isnt happening it may well be too late (if it isnt already). Europe is already bored with Brexit, they have other issues to consider. The UK isnt nearly as special as it imagines.

Lottapianos · 23/08/2018 20:23

'The UK isnt nearly as special as it imagines.'

I wish people could get this into their heads, instead of bleating on about how special we are and how they need us more than we need them. FFS.

Ta1kinpeace · 23/08/2018 20:28

I find that distance adds perspective ....

StorminaBcup · 23/08/2018 20:28

I agree. Europe doesn't need us at all, they managed perfectly well while we were pratting about deciding wether to join or not. I really don't understand where this attitude comes from.

How verrah dare you sah? I demand satisfaction

sashh · 23/08/2018 20:35

I totally agree.

She should not have triggered article 50.

She should have made it a cross party issue and got people from all parties negotiating. And I don't just mean political parties, business leaders, scientists etc should have been involved.

Nick Clegg was put out of his job but has a record for making people agree so he could have lead the team. I may not be entirely joking.

Lottapianos · 23/08/2018 20:38

'She should not have triggered article 50.'

Obviously. Total fucking madness. I wonder how many times she's kicked herself for being such a muppet

BonnieF · 23/08/2018 20:39

Nobody, apart from a handful of extreme Brexiteers wants a ‘no deal’ exit. It’s in nobody’s interests. The ONLY reason we are in this mess is the U.K. government’s combination of utter incompetence and chaotic disunity. If we do crash out with no deal, it will be by accident, because the useless government have completely screwed up the whole thing.

The EU’s negotiatiors have run rings round Britain at every stage of this process. They had their negotiating position properly thought through while Britain was wasting time on a completely pointless election. They have treated May and Davies with utter disdain and contempt, because that is what they deserve.

'Fuck all those who voted for this stupid shower of shit. No going to pull together with those ignorant fuckwits, I'll happily throw them under a bus to serve my own ends and those of my family.'

How typical of most remainers, abuse and selfishness. How old are you, for God's sake? Grow up.

Sadly for you and those like you, we are leaving the EU and WTO is becoming more likely by the day, thanks to May and her mates trying to covertly thwart or undermine Brexit instead of doing what the voters told them.

What is being gained is sovereignty, to make the UK a self-governing democracy again, to save us becoming a vassal state to a corrupt, anti-democratic European superstate run largely by and for the benefit of Germany.

Parliament cannot choose WTO as that outcome is the consequence of the EU failing to offer a deal the voters will accept. Parliament might be tempted to vote to accept a BRINO but all hell will break loose if they try.

I can't tell you how glad I am Leave won, and how much I enjoy the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth of Remainers. You anti-British types deserve it.

Childrenofthesun · 23/08/2018 20:48

I would have said until recently that there's no chance of a no deal exit as no government could be so insane, but I now think it's entirely possible the government could allow us to crash out by accident!

I think there may be a last minute GE. The EU have said they would extend negotiations if there was significant political change. I am wondering if TM is hoping that Labour will win enough votes to have to take charge of negotiations and she can shift the poisoned chalice on to them.

Frequency · 23/08/2018 20:49

Weren't we already a self-governing, sovereign country?

Ta1kinpeace · 23/08/2018 20:49

WhollyFather
Why are you happy with the unelected bureaucrats of the WTO in Geneva?
rather than the ones in Brussels

Why are you happy that any changes to the UK's terms and conditions of trade in goods can be vetoed by any one of 162 countries?
rather than 27 as at present

Are you really happy that the UK will become the only country in the world to be trading solely on WTO terms ?

Lottapianos · 23/08/2018 20:49

'I can't tell you how glad I am Leave won'

God yes, I mean it's all going so beautifully. Lots to celebrate there Hmm And for the love of sanity, please spare me the 'sovereignty' nonsense

LeftRightCentre · 23/08/2018 20:49

I'm not young, Wholly, and I don't need to grow up, I need to plan for what might happen when this stupid shitstorm starts bearing fruit. YOU deserve all the economic ill you get from your stupid actions, I'll just have to perhaps move countries. The rest of Europe is rubbing their hands with glee at how we will be thoroughly fucked, but hey, you'll have your sovereignity to pay your pension, oh, wait, that'll be worth nothing because the currency will be, too. Sadly, you're the ones who will suffer. I'll do what I can to get me and mine out of it. The only selfish ones are those who voted for this shitstorm that's about to tank our economy.

Bearbehind · 23/08/2018 20:52

wholly do you have a list of pre-typed soundbytes that you just copy and paste when needed?

Can you articulate even 1 actual tangible benefit of leaving?

StorminaBcup · 23/08/2018 20:54

What is being gained is sovereignty

Can you explain what you mean please?

OP posts:
LeftRightCentre · 23/08/2018 20:55

I think there may be a last minute GE. The EU have said they would extend negotiations if there was significant political change.

A) There's not enough time for that B) Even if you had one there would not be significant political change unless you think it's a good idea to have Boris or Rees-Mogg as PM. Their not even back at work because they went on holiday, that's how fucking important Britain is to them, all whilst wanting an expenses increase.

Lottapianos · 23/08/2018 20:59

'unless you think it's a good idea to have Boris or Rees-Mogg as PM. '

Dear god. That really would be time for 'last one out, turn the lights off' Shock

I don't know what to bloody hope for anymore

Jason118 · 23/08/2018 21:01

Wholly
If you ever develop the intellect to listen, understand, and rationalise an argument then you will realise that many people are getting upset, annoyed and irate simply because they do love their country and all the evidence is currently pointing to it being royally fucked over because of the actions of people like you. So if you don't mind, while there is still some hope of avoiding this shitstorm, we will continue to voice our heartfelt, patriotic opinions on how to maintain a successful, prosperous, inclusive and outward looking United Kingdom (unfortunately with a total absence of unicorns)

2018
20 September - EU leaders are expected to discuss Brexit, although a full summit has been ruled out
17-18 October - EU summit. This has been seen as a deadline for an agreement setting out the terms of UK-EU "divorce" - the so-called withdrawal agreement - to allow enough time for the UK Parliament and the European Parliament to ratify it. A political declaration on the future relationship between the UK and the EU is also expected at this point
November - The EU has suggested this month is the latest a deal could be finalised. There is speculation that an emergency EU summit on Brexit might be held in this month, if a withdrawal agreement and a declaration on the future relationship are not reached in October
If a deal has been agreed, MPs will be asked to approve it
13-14 December - EU summit. If a deal has not been done by October, this is the fallback option if the two sides still want to reach an agreement
2019
Ratification of the withdrawal agreement by the UK Parliament and the European Parliament.

21 January - If the government has not presented its withdrawal agreement by this date, powers for MPs to influence ministers' next steps will kick in
21-22 March - The final summit that the UK is expected to attend as a member of the EU
Before 29 March - Parliament will have to pass the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill to implement the withdrawal agreement, assuming it was approved by Parliament beforehand
29 March, at 2300 GMT - The UK leaves the EU. A special summit of the 27 other EU countries soon after the UK's exit is expected, but has not yet been scheduled
23-26May Elections for the European Parliament in 27 EU countries (the UK will no longer be represented in the parliament)

Theworldisfullofgs · 23/08/2018 21:08

May is not a remainer and using that as an excuse is just lazy thinking. May is nothing and was led by what she was told by Cameron.

No deal is highly likely btw.

1tisILeClerc · 23/08/2018 21:20

Maybe Whollyfather should get out more and possibly go to Europe and see what being a member of the EU actually means.
None of the members will ever surrender their individual sovereignty. Indeed all have their own gripes about 'Brussels' however they largely agree that it is far better to be a member as the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. I have just driven across 3 countries over the last couple of days. Crossing borders at 80 MPH past the acres of concrete that were the former customs posts where you used to spend an hour or so to have your car checked and passport stamped.
It is so depressing as a British citizen to see how small minded so many are in the UK, harking back 120 years to an 'empire' won by killing.
As a British European my 'customer base' was 400 Million other Europeans. With the suggestions being put forward to make customs and tariffs a whole lot more difficult so my customer base has shrunk by 60 million as the UK leaves. Had I stayed in the UK the extra tariffs and the devaluation of the Pound would severely damage my income.
The EU are not 'imposing' any rules that were not already written down. The UK was involved with writing many of the rules but it seems the current crop of politicians can't even be bothered to read them, it is not difficult, they are in 27+ languages conveniently on the EU website but no, the UK has come up with a set of 'demands' that even an hour's checking would have revealed that they won't get ratified.
The EU are not 'running rings' around the UK, they are waiting patiently for anyone in the UK to read the rules then ask sensible requests.
FOM is an issue in the EU in general and the EU parliament have been slow off the mark to deal with it. The original premise was fine as the first group of countries had broadly similar labour markets but the rules should have been modified when the countries with rather poorer economies joined.
16 Million may have voted to leave, but now all 65 Million are going to get significantly poorer. Congratulations!

Vivalarevolution · 23/08/2018 21:25

I hope there is a no deal. How can all you remoaners keep wanting to be part of a gluttonous monstrosity that hates the U.K. so much. Remoaners are all deluded in thinking Europe wants what's best for the U.K.
