Do you think street parties, riots, candlelit vigils, what?

I don't see how half the country feeling disenfranchised is the EU's fault Confused

I do however, see statements like that as further examples of people choosing to shoot themselves in the foot because of an unrelated issue.

I do agree that WM has a lot to answer for in ignoring the woes of large parts of the country. But that is not the EU's fault. Indeed, its ERDF support was one of the things that was mitigating the worst of some of the government's austerity measures (cf Cornwall's post hoc desperate requests that it keep the same level
of funding, despite having voted, as a region, Leave Confused)

IdahoJones · 21/08/2018 21:05

BREXIT BINGO has jumped the shark now with 'ranting and raving' and 'grow up'.

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 21/08/2018 21:06

I guess what Germany didnt manage to achieve during 2 WWs it had managed via the unification of Europe, because they’re the real winners of the single market and Euro

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 21/08/2018 21:07

Instead of engaging

What exactly does engaging look like?

Moussemoose · 21/08/2018 21:14

Yes FPTP does leave people feeling disenfranchised which is why some of us have been banging on about electoral reform for years.

There was a referendum on electoral reform and the opportunity to change was presented to the electorate and they turned it down.

We have some major constitutional issues in this country which nerds like me would love to discuss but absolutely non of them have anything to do with the EU.

The Germans have worked bloody hard to achieve what they have. Any slightly xenophobic 'the Germans have won comment' are discredit to either side. Germany built itself up (with Marshal aid) from ruins, they reintegrated half their country after the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

You don't slag off other countries while living in the glass house that is Brexit.

ChildofCastor · 21/08/2018 21:14

I suggest they stock up on their party food well before the day though!

PestymcPestFace · 21/08/2018 21:14

If we stay, half the country will feel disenfranchised.
If we leave , half the country will feel disenfranchised.
If we leave with a bad deal, the whole country will feel disenfranchised.

What all this has shown is we have problems, big ones. We need to reform how our country works. Make it work better for the people and not just for the two main parties. Electoral reform in some version of PR would be a good start.

Ta1kinpeace · 21/08/2018 21:16

Good post pesty

Yaralie · 21/08/2018 21:16

The referendum on electoral reform offered only the choice of AV, which is not the same as PR. If PR had been offered I think the majority would have voted for change but that would not have suited the Tory Party or the Labour Party which is why we have never been offered that choice.

Moussemoose · 21/08/2018 21:17

FrankUnderwoodsWife

your liberal high horse

Please note it is the liberals (small l) and the Lib Dem's who have been trying desperately to get electoral reform on the agenda. They have been attempting to engage with this issue for the last 50 years!

Moussemoose · 21/08/2018 21:19

AV was not a brilliant solution but it was a first step and it is more proportional.

There is no one system is called 'proportional representation' there are a variety of systems that are more or less proportional. A truly proportional system comes with another set of issues.

Rosstac · 21/08/2018 21:22

Bearbehind sorry I don’t get what you mean, pick the best bits for me, I haven’t been on holiday or visited the EU for over 20 years and I’m a bit old for getting educated in the EU, of course I would like something done about FOM on the jobs and living side because that’s the bit that has and is devastating the lives of people in my area, as I said not stopped just better control.

keyboardkate · 21/08/2018 21:22

Bottom line is, whether Brexiteers like it or not, WTO will not work, neither will Canada style Trade Agreements, it took 10 years for that one with EU! But I suppose some will say that it will be agreed ex EU with Britain in a matter of weeks. I am sure of that too.....

Norway might work, but what's the point of that? BINO again.

You may say we can impose 0% tariffs on imports under WTO. But then we have to apply that to ALL WTO trading nations under the "favoured nation" clause. Uh Oh. And some WTO countries are not happy with a hubristic UK claiming WTO quotas either. A mess.

Anway I am sure there are trade deals agreed all over the world as we speak. We just haven't been told about them yet. Sarky remark, could not help it.

UK wants to keep all the benefits of trading with the EU bloc, and keep all the rules and regs etc. without reciprocation. Otherwise why not just crash out on A50 day and have the courage of your convictions?

Doubt there will be any answers to that.

Yaralie · 21/08/2018 21:23

There is only one answer to that - remain in the EU.

Ta1kinpeace · 21/08/2018 21:24

I would like something done about FOM on the jobs and living side because that’s the bit that has and is devastating the lives of people in my area
Ending FOM will not improve the economy of Lincolnshire.

keyboardkate · 21/08/2018 21:26

@Moussemoose

Good and interesting post.

Rosstac · 21/08/2018 21:26

PestymcPestFace You’re right we need some new parties to come along with fresh ideas and motivation, I think that no MP should do more than 10 years, they seem to get old, set in their ways and animosities seem to set in between people,

Rosstac · 21/08/2018 21:28

Ta1kinpeace No it’s to late now, but it might save other places from turning out the same

Ta1kinpeace · 21/08/2018 21:31

but it might save other places from turning out the same
How ?
Lincolnshire's problems are nothing to do with the EU
why will Brexit change anything there or elsewhere

Moussemoose · 21/08/2018 21:32

Rosstac lots of other places value their immigrant community. Many other people and communities value the contributions made by immigrants to the U.K.. I like living in a city with a large immigrant population, it is vibrant and thriving.

I have visited East Anglia recently and talked to locals about immigration. I would suggest the attitude of the local population was not totally welcoming and supportive to the immigrant communities who came to support the local economy. I would suggest if people from other parts of the U.K. are not made to feel welcome then people from other countries must face an uphill struggle.

Rosstac · 21/08/2018 21:34

Ta1kinpeace I beg to differ, if the numbers of immigrants had been better controlled or the necessary infrastructure put in place before they came, but the government didn’t expect the numbers that are there that’s for sure

Ta1kinpeace · 21/08/2018 21:38

rosstac
You do know that areas with the highest levels of immigration voted remain don't you?

And the immigrants in Lincolnshire do jobs that Brits do not want.
Who will do those jobs if the EU folks leave ?

PestymcPestFace · 21/08/2018 21:40

We need teams, young and old, men and women, left, right and every shade of central. Teams who work together to represent the interests and concerns of the UK public. Teams who can work out good compromises.

I have attended a few sporting fixtures where the behaviour is similar to the HoC. It sure gets the adrenalin going.
I have never worked anywhere where the atmosphere was like Millwall vs lord of the flies. Our politicians need to grow up and realise that; fiddling your expenses is not a main part of the job, lying is not compulsory and that no other HR department has ever found it necessary to add a clause about not shagging prostitutes in the office over the woolsack.

keyboardkate · 21/08/2018 21:41

PR or some form of it is desperately need now.

Yin and Yang forever more doesn't appeal to me at all. Those with vision, new parties, young people with ideas and so on and on and on will NEVER have a voice in this country unless something changes. But I doubt it will anytime soon.

I have to laugh on General Election night. The only thing the commentators can comment on is a swing from Red to Blue or vice versa. Boring and unrepresentative.

Now I know some will say that PR might lead to UKIP, but so what? It is representative, and Lib Dems? So what, it is representative. It's the reds and the blues that are terrified really.

Just to mention, we share our FPTP system with many countries, but if you google them, would you like to be aligned with their voting systems?

We don't share our voting system with progressive countries apart from Canada, and Trudeau has agreed to start a convo about a better form of representation there also.

The US is another. Nuff said there.

The rest of them, well have a look at the countries.

Yaralie · 21/08/2018 21:47

If UKIP MPs had ever been elected they would have become a laughing stock a lot sooner.
