Do you think street parties, riots, candlelit vigils, what?

Much like the millennium bug, I imagine the day will pass as normal

In 1999 one of my relatives was working in a bank as a systems analyst. Annual leave was banned for the year, 9-5 jobs became round the clock and people who were prepared to work the new year got 8x their normal pay.

The reason the day passed as normal was that hundreds of people were working to make that happen.

Brexit has a couple of people who are not really bothered.

prettybird · 21/08/2018 09:25

....let alone the damage that WTO terms would do to the UK.

The UK doesn't have the infrastructure to check and apply WTO tariffs to imports. It can choose not to - but under WTO terms, if they don't apply tariffs and checks to one country, they can't apply them to any country: thereby opening up the UK to all and sundry (non-quality controlled baby milk formula anyone?) and killing UK us ones with cheap potentially dangerous imports Sad

Doesn't really matter though Hmm Some Brexiters have already said that the demise of UK farming and manufacture is a price worth paying AngrySad

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 21/08/2018 09:27

And if there is no deal we will trade under WTO rules, like the rest of the world shock horror

Just how many countries actually trade on purely WTO rules? Would you be so kind as to name any?

mrbob · 21/08/2018 09:30

I don't think there will be an Brexit Day. The polls are shifting against Brexit

Um I thought the decision had been made. After people voted for this bollocks. Now it has to be lived with. I imagine the British economy will get even worse than it already is. The politicians will have some plans to avoid all this stuff I am sure FOR THEMSELVES and screw everyone else. They can just blame it all on someone else or the people who voted in favour of BREXIT

LemonysSnicket · 21/08/2018 09:40

Protests, football hooliganism and the price of Brie will get to £3

cloudtree · 21/08/2018 09:45

I dont think there will be riots and chaos on Brexit day if there is no deal. I think there will be a lot of smug idiots saying "see - the sky hasn't fallen in!".

Then the riots and chaos will come a fortnight later when the supply chain issues impact, prices skyrocket and people can't feed their families.

So lets all pray for a bloody deal.

Not like the Millenium bug. Firms spent something like 5 years and thousands of pounds preparing for that. Not like the current Government who have spent two years fighting like ferrets in a sack but done little preparation. David Davis could hardly be bothered to go to Brussels for talks.

virtuousfantine · 21/08/2018 10:04

Needsleepneedsleep · 21/08/2018 10:08

The lights will go out, no electricity, no mobile phones, no internet, no computers, no international flights will be allowed to land or leave, no food in shops.
Hmm

Needsleepneedsleep · 21/08/2018 10:10

But in seriousness, I don't think there will be immediate problems. It will be in the following weeks and months.

bellinisurge · 21/08/2018 10:11

If you think the Millennium Bug was fake news or a nothingburger (or whatever this year's idiot expression is) you are a bigger numbskull than previously imagined. A lot of planning, a lot of effort and a lot of smart people went into making that a non-problem for everyday people. Which is the opposite of what we have with Brexshit.

Rosstac · 21/08/2018 11:05

bellinisurge You’re still not peddling that nonsense, only 20% of very old equipment comp, plc’s, hmi etc were effected

sashh · 21/08/2018 11:14

Rosstac

The problem was software, not hardware. Lots of existing programs had been written in FORTRAN and some still use it today.

Rosstac · 21/08/2018 11:25

Yes I know, and it was nowhere near as bad as originally feared, yes testing went in to find out if there were problems, mostly there were not, but people were scared I That there systems were going to crash, I know a few people that done very very well out of the MB

bellinisurge · 21/08/2018 11:31

@Rosstac - "peddling nonsense "Hmm. You mean "pointing out reality".
I know BeLeavers hate facts and reality and prefer peddling nonsense of their own but I am old enough to remember preparations for the Millennium Bug.

Moussemoose · 21/08/2018 11:35

It was no where near as bad because people prepared for it.

The preparation for Brexit is shit. We have no agreement as yet with less than 8 months to go.

BIG difference.

Helmetbymidnight · 21/08/2018 11:37

I still don’t get why the milenium bug comparisons? It seems a bit...random. Is that the only history people know?
What about -Spanish flu pandemic, hills borough, outbreak of ww2, founding of the Nhs, Russian revolution, etc?

Helmetbymidnight · 21/08/2018 11:38

What are brexiteers latest thoughts on the Irish border? What do you hope to see happen there on your special day?

TheElementsSong · 21/08/2018 11:45

I still don’t get why the milenium bug comparisons?

Because it's inane and amply demonstrates a hearty lack of understanding of underlying issues? Grin

Helmetbymidnight · 21/08/2018 11:46

I thought it might be that but didn't like to say...Grin

Chocolala · 21/08/2018 11:51

It’s a Friday. We will all get up and go to work, then go to the pub/home in the evening.

Because it is a Friday (aka a good day to release bad news) we won’t hear about many problems because Friday news hits the slower weekend news cycle. However, if we crash out without a deal, we will start to see problems the following week.

There may be some parties. Depending on public mood, they may be subdued, rather like the general public MAGA rallies in the USA became post-election. Or lots of people will attend because, hey, may as well.

llangennith · 21/08/2018 11:53

We'll all carry on as normal. Same as we did when we joined.

Rosstac · 21/08/2018 11:57

Helmetbymidnight I expect to see exactly the shame on Saturday that’s was there on friday

Jayfee · 21/08/2018 11:57

Hopefully enough people sign the petition on change.org/ finalsay so that we get a vote on the final Brexit deal rather than twits like Jacob Rees mogg, bed Johnson et al. pushing us over the cliff!

Jayfee · 21/08/2018 11:58

Should have been Boris not bed but perhaps bed Johnson is better!!
