I see a problem in that Leavers want to see a tangible 'change' from Brexit day onwards.
This means (it would seem) that there should be fewer 'foreigners' visible on the streets and waiting time at the doctors will reduce but actually they want everything else to be 'the same'.
So apart from having the 'childcatcher' from Chitty chitty bang bang go around, and some doctors appear what else do the leavers want to 'see'?

Sweaty and nervous, Raab fumbles his Brexit no-deal announcement
By Ian Dunt

Ian Dunt @ iandunt
Raab's 'no-deal contingency plan' presumes there'll be a deal, doesn't provide contingencies and is not a plan

David Allen Green @ davidallengreen
So "Taking Back Control" is now reduced to...

...the rushed publication of policy papers setting out how UK will continue to adopt EU rules hoping - desperately hoping - that the EU will reciprocate.

This is not an exaggeration.

OP posts:
1tisILeClerc · 23/08/2018 17:39

Seeing Mr Raab's 'announcement' earlier suggests that if there is a plan the rest of the government didn't tell him what it might be.
Maybe the perspiration was his body telling the public he was not committed to what he was saying?

So Boris leaves office and Nazanin gets out on temporary release weeks later...

Mr Hammond should get a bit of credit for his unpopular but 'accurate' statement. Whether the UK 'loses' 1 billion or 100 Billion, the principle that we are LOSING is important.

Wording I last used to my MP described Brexit as “this appalling shitstorm”. However she has had plenty of more measured communications from me previously, and I wouldn’t recommend it as a first approach.

1tisILeClerc · 23/08/2018 19:05

The 'news' of planned departures (or serious pulling back on projects) by the likes of BMW/Airbus/Nissan has gone awfully quiet. Have they been 'told' to keep quiet or have they booked the last ferries on 28th and a fleet of trucks to remove the machinery of their respective industries?
August/September was the suggested time of reckoning that was reported months ago.
Apart from Putin and a handful of 'UK' ministers and millionaires, who is going to be happy with ANY of this Brexit fiasco? What IS the bigger picture? We have 16 million who are going to be angry with the 17 million who are going to be angry with whatever government is left when they realise that the unicorns never existed.
It takes hardly any thought at all to work out that we are all going to be WORSE off, as indeed we already are and it hasn't happened yet.

My normal mode has been to log on, read this thread, facepalm and shut down again. First time in ages I laughed. Its like even the Tories aren't that desperate Grin

Hazardswan · 23/08/2018 19:10

born oh good, I'm glad it doesn't have to be uniformly formal in tone Smile

Peregrina · 23/08/2018 20:02

It doesn't surprise me, but it absolutely appalls me, that the advice is 'think about getting some software.....'

By now, two years on, you would expect 'This is software which HMRC is satisfied is compliant with Customs requirements.'

I would half excuse the average Leave voter - I have no sympathy whatever for our expensively educated Cabinet - what on earth did their expensive schools teach them?

1tisILeClerc · 23/08/2018 20:04

On the basis that your MP has failed to shout loud enough to get this catastrophe stopped, either by design or by accident, you should use the strongest language possible within the law. They collectively are going to destroy the UK either in a 'big bang' or through death of a thousand cuts.
Just a couple of minutes worth of thinking logically about 'what if.XXXX.....happens, what will be the result, will tell you that Brexit as is being proposed (in any form) is a really bad idea. The thinking doesn't even need to be accurate. Things generally work pretty well at the moment. Upsetting the situation, say delaying transport of fresh food by a couple of days (on a regular basis) means it needs to be stored and refrigerated. Where are these places? Currently they don't exist as much produce is Just In Time.

1tisILeClerc · 23/08/2018 20:12

The current customs/VAT software system is nearly at it's 'system capacity'. It is adequate at the moment as most of the goods from the EU don't need it's capability. A new system is being developed and is in the pipeline, but the extra capacity to handle the transactions that will be necessary are about 3 times what is done at the moment.
The Government has 'form' for new computer systems and little is positive!

woman11017 · 23/08/2018 20:13

Ooh, Mr Banks. Interesting. new posters. Smile Gin
Brew etc.

Hazardswan · 23/08/2018 20:43

Anyone get the lib dem email about contacting Cornyn?

^Yesterday, I sent you a video of Corbyn refusing to answer a question about whether we would be better off after Brexit five times. [You can watch it here]

Already this has been seen fifty thousand times on Facebook – with no sign of it slowing down.

But this doesn’t resolve the fact that our "official opposition" continues to let this Conservative government do what they want on Brexit.

We need to continue to put pressure on Jeremy Corbyn to insist that the people have the final say on the Brexit deal – with an option to remain in the EU.

Will you help us get an answer out of him that Channel 4 did not:

Will we be better off after Brexit?

Email him
Tweet him
You could even phone his office on: 02072193545.

With your help, we are going to stop Brexit – with or without Jeremy Corbyn.

Christine

Christine Jardine, MP for Edinburgh West^

Fox's new trade deals will save us ?
(if he gets any deals)

https://www.parliament.uk/documents/commons-committees/Exiting-the-European-Union/17-19/Cross-Whitehall-briefing/EU-Exit-Analysis-Cross-Whitehall-Briefing.pdf

"long term, new trade deals with TPP countries, ASEAN, TGCC, China, India, Australia and New Zealand could add 0.2% to 0.7% to GDP"

< That's not very imoressive compared to losing 10% >

HermioneGoesBackHome · 23/08/2018 21:38

I dont know about you but atm, the relentless comments form the GOVERNMENT on how bad brexit will be is making me think we are in full on propaganda mode to scare people of Brexit so everyone is happy to accept whatever deal when we can get from the EU.
Actually I even suspect that the deal might be very soft BUT to be accepted by the population, it needs to be VERY scary to not Get a deal instead iyswim.

One of the things that made me think that is Raab going on about on the government I see keen to not kick eu citizens it if the EU, that he want to to protect them instead etc... completely ignoring the fact the uk already has passed the LAW about the Settled Status (so EU citizens ARE indeed protected, Deal or no deal)

Maybe I’m optimistic but it really feels like the government has taken Project Fear as his own atm.

Peregrina · 23/08/2018 21:42

Yes, I did get the LibDem Email about Corbyn, and adapted the letter attached and sent it to him. His prevaricating was worthy of Theresa May herself - waffle, waffle, waffle and I duly told him so.

Hazardswan · 23/08/2018 21:49

peregrina I adapted as well. Tempted to ring the office tomorrow.

Cailleach1 · 23/08/2018 22:08

Do forgive me if this is already posted. I went back a few pages...but am essentially a lazy maisie. The second link is good. Where the heck have been the people knowledgeable about EU or/and WTO while brexiteers were allowed to come on media and spout complete and utter rubbish. Oh, and those brexiteers pretend it is something they know about. This Jason Hunter chappie is coming forth a lot now.

One bone I have to pick with him. And nearly everyone does it. They say the EU market begins across the channel. Em, no. It begins 0cm away. At the Irish border.

I must admit I thought the NI info about trade with Ireland very funny. Well, if it wasn't so serious. Contact Dublin. It is almost playing on the DUP's worst fears.

Cailleach1 · 23/08/2018 22:16

EU market post Brexit, that is. Of course, the UK are in the EU right now.
