An open letter to leavers

Dear Leavers

I’m sorry that David Cameron offered us a referendum and promised to respect the outcome, whatever it was.

Unfortunately, he was fucking with you.

He promised that referendum when he didn’t think he stood a cat’s chance in hell of getting a majority, and never thought he’d actually have to deliver on it. When he got his surprise majority, he made a big show of going to Brussels and pretending to negotiate with the EU to get us a “better deal”. Unfortunately, he already knew perfectly well that the UK already had a better deal than any other country in the EU, and that they were not going to bend over backwards to get us to stay. So he made a big show of negotiating and then tried to pretend that he had done something meaningful. He then went through the motions of holding a referendum, half-heartedly campaigning to remain. He did absolutely no contingency planning, partly because he never believed that leave would actually win, and partly because he already knew that he had no intention of staying to deal with the fallout if they did. That’s why he resigned the day after the referendum and waltzed off, whistling a merry tune.

He played a high risk game of poker with our money, and lost.

I understand that many of you feel defensive about your decision and dislike being labelled “thick” by angry remainers. As a remainer myself, I feel saddened and frustrated that none of you seem able to articulate any benefits that will actually come out of Brexit. But at this stage, I would quite happily accept that there will be no benefits, and settle for damage limitation. Unfortunately none of you seem able to explain how we limit the damage either.

We cannot leave the single market and customs union without there being a hard border in Ireland, which will put people’s lives at risk. We cannot leave the single market and customs union without severely damaging most sectors of the economy, which would cause untold hardship for millions of people living in the UK. I realise that remaining in the single market and customs union would make leaving the EU pointless, but it is the only way to limit the damage.

The government has made almost no progress towards getting a workable deal in place, and time is running out. We don’t have the infrastructure in place to ensure that supply chains of essential food and medicine will not be disrupted after Brexit day. We don’t have a plan to ensure that planes will still be able to take off and land, or that satnav will still work. We do not have any trade deals lined up. We simply do not have time to do any of these things.

Dear leavers, you do not have solutions to any of these problems, and more importantly, neither do Theresa May, Boris Johnson, David Davis, Liam Fox, Nigel Farage, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Andrea Leadsom, Daniel Hannan, Jeremy Corbyn, Kate Hoey or any of the people who claim to think Brexit is the right choice for the UK.

A no-deal Brexit is unthinkable. It is not an option.

I realise that many of you will feel betrayed if we do not get the kind of Brexit you want. But to be honest, you’re going to feel betrayed even if you do get the kind of Brexit you want, because it will be unimaginably shit. This is not "project fear", it is "project reality".

The government has a duty to act in the best interests of the country as a whole. It’s not good enough to lay the blame at David Cameron’s door and say he held the referendum so we have to respect the vote. David Cameron has been out of office for two years. It is now plainer than ever that leaving the EU is a terrible idea, and there is still time to put the brakes on and not go through with it. If the government goes through with this when they could put a stop to it, they cannot continue to blame David Cameron and claim that their hands were tied. They are not.

It is time for Theresa May to do the decent thing and say, “I’m sorry, I know it’s what the people voted for, but it simply can’t be done without causing a totally unacceptable amount of harm to the country. And I have a duty of care towards everyone, not just the 51.8% who voted leave.”

it will be him then that sends the UK and EU into a recession

The thought-process here is utterly, utterly bizarre.

LoveInTokyo · 05/08/2018 18:36

Rosstac the higher you are, the longer it takes you to hit the bottom.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 05/08/2018 18:36

I was just about to post the same prettybird

It's laughable isn't it?

Helmetbymidnight · 05/08/2018 18:40

Mystifying.

Bearbehind · 05/08/2018 18:47

I know people talk about building bridges and listening to everyone's views but when one side is so clearly not even remotely based in reality that is completely pointless.

Until Leavers acknowledge that actual facts, the gap will never be bridged.

And the reality is, they never will acknowledge the facts.

The comment above, saying Barnier should not be able to sleep at night, is testament to that.

They'll always blame everyone except themselves for not having a fucking plan.

Bearbehind · 05/08/2018 19:00

it will be him then that sends the UK and EU into a recession. I hope he can sleep at night

That comment has made me so angry.

YOU voted for this

Fucking own it.

lljkk · 05/08/2018 19:01

Some of the diehard leavers have a plan, I've read Richard North's blog. His basic strategy is only one I ever thought could be reasonable, something like 5-10 yrs in a Norway type status, while negotiating further distance from EU and the next stages 'out'.

Not a plan for people who thought Brexit would be 'easy' and overnight or who are terrified of BINO even if 'only' for 10 yrs or so.

Helmetbymidnight · 05/08/2018 19:03

It will be the middle classes who will be losing their jobs and their houses, the higher up your are the more you have to fall,

Ah, well - we're half way there - Rosstac has finally admitted that Brexit will fuck the economy, she just hasn't worked out that it's not just the middle classes who will suffer.

Unbelievable really.

surferjet · 05/08/2018 19:08

We are all in it together though aren’t we.
Moaning and arguing about who’s right & who’s wrong is pointless now isn’t it.
Brexit will not be stopped so best pull together & make the best of it.

LoveInTokyo · 05/08/2018 19:10

The best of it is still going to be worse for everyone than remaining in the EU.

And we're not even going to get "the best of it" because the government is doing a spectacularly awful job.

OP posts:
Helmetbymidnight · 05/08/2018 19:12

Unbelievable.

Rosstac · 05/08/2018 19:14

prettybird because nobody can give me an answer about controlling EU immigration apart from that stupid and easily avoided 3 month rule, you’ve decided to pack the car up and travel to the UK nothing to lose as you have no job at home, after 3 months staying at your mates house you are just going to go oh well I better go home, that’s the rules, I haven’t got a full time job yet but the rules are the rules

LikeIDo1 · 05/08/2018 19:14

The best of it is still going to be worse for everyone than remaining in the EU.

Op you don't know that, that is your speculation/prediction.

Let's not get speculation and predictions be mixed up with actual facts. No one knows what will happen in the future so to say things like everyone's lives will be ruined and everyone's lives will be worse as though you definitely know the future like you have a crystal ball is ridiculous.

surferjet · 05/08/2018 19:19

Yes. It’s their certainty that everything will be awful that makes me take no notice of them.
How do they know?
The EU could change considerably in the next 5 to 10 years which could have impacted negatively on us.

Rosstac · 05/08/2018 19:19

Helmetbymidnigh apart from food prices, which might go up, if you listen others it will get cheaper, how is it going to get worse for me, I’ve got nothing to lose

LoveInTokyo · 05/08/2018 19:20

You’re ignoring all the things we do know. Including all the things that will happen if we leave without a deal (because they are the legal consequence of leaving without a deal), and which will be hugely damaging to the economy.

Heathrow Airport has made contingency plans to ensure that they can avoid going bust even if they are without income for two months.

Two. Months.

The cost to the economy of Heathrow Airport being unable to operate for even a few days would be massive, as the volcanic ash episode proved.

Only no deal Brexit will be an uninsurable event, and no one knows how long it would go on for.

Not to mention the fact that the effects of a no deal Brexit won’t be limited to aviation but will hit all kinds of different sectors of the economy at the same time.

And this is currently the most likely outcome that we are being told to prepare for.

OP posts:
Rosstac · 05/08/2018 19:21

LoveInTokyo And the longer you’ve got to fall

LoveInTokyo · 05/08/2018 19:23

Rosstac if you can afford to eat and have a phone/computer/internet connection to post on MN then you have something to lose.

OP posts:
Peregrina · 05/08/2018 19:24

Brexit will not be stopped so best pull together & make the best of it.

"Making the best of it", implies making the best of a bad job.

Strangely this statement sits rather uneasily with:
I'm still walking on air & soooooo happy we're leaving, just want A50 triggered ASAP!

Rosstac · 05/08/2018 19:25

Bearbehind I do own it, I was asked a question to which I gave a answer too, if you don’t like the answer don’t ask the question, it’s up to the government and the EU to do a deal not me, perhaps they should have made the process of leaving ( A50 ) more transparent and terms written that everybody can read

surferjet · 05/08/2018 19:25

If all these terrible things happen it will be the EU’s fault for not agreeing to our terms.

Blame them. Because I will.

LikeIDo1 · 05/08/2018 19:27

Or the EU could collapse in the next 10 years. Not necessarily just because of the U.K. but we could create a domino effect where other countries are looking to see how ours go then follow suit.

Or the EU could continue to add more and more ridiculous rules and cost every country even more money.

Or the EU will carry on as usual and we will too.

Or we could collapse into oblivion and we will all have to migrate to Europe.

^Or..
^
See how it's easy to speculate!

When it comes to the future no one knows, no one can put across arguments as though they are talking factually.

It's fine to talk about it, disagree, agree, speculate what may or may not happen. But don't act all high and mighty as though you know for sure what will happen and everyone else must be idiots. You DON'T know for sure so stop acting like you do.

It's all speculation and predictions, not facts.

Rosstac · 05/08/2018 19:28

LoveInTokyo, I will have a wager with you for Charity that planes will still be flying in and out of the UK the day after the no deal Brexit, I haven’t got much, how about £100

surferjet · 05/08/2018 19:29

Peregrina

I was talking to the remainers of mumsnet.
You need to stop obsessing over the world ending & get a grip.
So yes, get over yourselves & think positively. Make the best of your situation.

LoveInTokyo · 05/08/2018 19:29

If all these terrible things happen it will be the EU’s fault for not agreeing to our terms.

You sound like a petulant child.
