I honestly couldn't think of a better starter to the thread than simply just this tweet

Robert Peston @ peston
We’ve got an official opposition tearing itself apart over antisemitism, the founder of the EDL running rings around the judiciary and a government negotiating a Brexit plan that its own MPs and ministers tell me is dead. When will we pull ourselves together, as a nation?

But don't worry, your blue passport will get you an extra special long wait at passport control. And no deal could lead to continued freedom of movement anyway. Something for everyone in there.

Here's an interesting thought: what happens when we leave Euratom and we can't get nuclear fuel rods? Note as well the 12.5% import figure.

British electricity mix at 1AM on 10th Aug 2018

Nuclear 35.7% Gas 30.6% Coal 0.0%
Wind 12.4% Solar 0.0% Hydro 0.4%
Biomass 7.8% Import 12.5%
Storage 0.0% Other 0.6%

Generation 22GW
Carbon intensity 175gCO2eq./kWh
vs a target of 50-100gCO2/kWh by 2030

Football fans starting to learn about Brexit.

news.sky.com/story/football-transfer-fee-hikes-from-brexit-enough-to-nearly-buy-cristiano-ronaldo-11467433

Premier League football clubs have been forced to foot an extra £88.3m in transfer fees because of Brexit causing sterling's value to slump, it has been claimed.

(contd)

This bit jumped out ...

"For the biggest clubs that might not be such an issue, but for everyone else, that means money that can't be spent on other areas like training facilities or money they have to raise by hiking ticket prices."

Cailleach1 · 10/08/2018 13:45

WiseUp, if they said they would collaborate to try or attempt to deliver all that followed in that paragraph. They cannot guarantee access. It needs that qualification.

Likewise, if the transition was agreed that would give rise to things staying roughly the same for pharma. They say it will. It needs qualification in all cases.

mybrainhurtsalot · 10/08/2018 14:40

This article quotes the MRHA saying the implementation period is agreed:

www.pharmacy.biz/medicines-will-no-longer-be-available-in-uk-post-brexit-unless-mhra-acts-to-end-impasse/

“We have reached agreement on the terms of an implementation period from March 30 2019 to December 31 2020. During this time, the UK will no longer be a member state, but market access will continue on current terms.

“We will continue to advise businesses on the basis of the UK position and will continue to work with the European Medicines Agency in planning for the UK’s withdrawal from the EU and future relationship.”

Talkstotrees · 10/08/2018 15:11

Isn’t that what the implementation period is though? Everything stays pretty much the same as they work out how to implement the new arrangements? But without the new arrangements agreed there is ‘no deal’ and therefore no implementation period.

mybrainhurtsalot · 10/08/2018 15:15

And this:

www.gov.uk/government/news/mhra-update-to-pharmaceutical-companies-on-exit-preparations

So basically head in the sand, we’ve said we want everything to stay the same so it will style stuff.

mybrainhurtsalot · 10/08/2018 15:47

Yes, they just seem to be banking on the implementation period happening, with no plan B.

Yes. Come back & tell us when you have some real news @mhra, such as what post implementation will look like 🤷‍♀️

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 10/08/2018 16:30

DGRosetti. it would be hilarious were it not so feckin’ tragic.

Who tweeted this? -I’d like to share further if that’s ok.

DH and I were discussing yesterday how if The Thick of It was still around they couldn’t come up with any scripts more ridiculous than what’s really happening.

We truly are in a world beyond parody...

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 10/08/2018 17:19

Have just found the full story on mailOline. Funny how they’re so frothy-mouthed about the £6 visas in the headline but not about this:

Last year a report written by Tory MP Craig Mackinlay, a Brexiteer, proposed charging EU nationals £10 for a visa to enter the UK after Brexit.

Sorry. I forgot. We’re special and deserve all the special treatment and all the cherries and all the rainbows.

DGRossetti · 10/08/2018 17:26

Of course, the Mail, being written by the thick, for the thick, managed to swerve the implications of what they are writing about.

Forget the cost of visas. That's a frippery. The real kicker will be when Brits suddenly discover they can't get a visa. Money or not. Not everywhere, but quite a few places in Europe have been keeping their heads down over this, but are looking forward to the ability to refuse boozed up Brits entry, and deporting misbehaving Brits with a "never come back" sticker in their blue passport.

There will be a certain pleasure to be had from reading all the stories of UK seaside resorts becoming simulcrams of the Last Day of Sodom, as stag and hen parties suddenly find they can't all get visas.

Of course, banned from one, banned from all. That'll be 27 countries you can't visit then.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 10/08/2018 17:33

Er... not for those of us who live at the seaside DG

Havanananana · 10/08/2018 17:38

Exactly.

Criminal record (approx. 30% of all British men) = no visa
No record of recent employment = no visa
Insufficient funds = no visa
No travel insurance (or not able to get affordable insurance) = no visa

DGRossetti · 10/08/2018 17:42

arrested for antisocial behaviour = deportation. And no visa. Ever again.

It may have been less of a worry in the golden 50s and 60s. But with modern passport control, it will be practically impossible to evade the fact you're barred. Bearing in mind, it will be the carriers that will do the heavy lifting on this one, as they'll face the fine if they deliver a visaless Brit into the EU.

There are all sorts of other conditions that could be applied to winnow out the Brits they don't want. We'll be a 3rd country, don't forget.

DGRossetti · 10/08/2018 17:45

Er... not for those of us who live at the seaside DG

I managed to not finish my train of thought. It was along the lines of quite a few English seaside destinations seemed very keen on Leave. Not exclusively I know. But enough to be writing outraged letters to whatever remains of the Daily Mail after AIBU has gone medieval on their ass. (I'm presuming it's the Daily Mail, on past performance ...)

It would be pretty shitty for seaside remainers Sad.

jasjas1973 · 10/08/2018 18:22

30% of UK men have a criminal record? Good grief, I had no idea it was that high. Well, every day's a school day...

UnnecessaryFennel · 10/08/2018 18:29

Ha! x-posts mrsr! I find that incredible tbh but a quick google suggests it is indeed the case.

I may be under the influence of a glass of wine. We are only occasional drinkers ... but
I've thought of a Brexit solution if there's a second ref.

30% of UK men have a criminal record so...

Women were denied the vote for centuries. Let's have equality- so say half a century of men being disenfranchised ! The men on this thread are pretty sound, so they can self identify and vote too, and then the whole mess is ( hopefully) sorted.

Peregrina · 10/08/2018 18:56

A benefit of Brexit then? Rowdy stag and hen parties and lager louts denied entry to Spain?

BigChocFrenzy · 10/08/2018 19:49

Latest YouGov poll
shows most people believe Brexit will damage the economy - but 84% of Leavers would still vote Leave

The age split is staggering and may lead to a permanent rupture between the generations

  • this aspect of future politics & policies, after a hard Brexit, has not had enough attention
