I honestly couldn't think of a better starter to the thread than simply just this tweet

Robert Peston @ peston
We’ve got an official opposition tearing itself apart over antisemitism, the founder of the EDL running rings around the judiciary and a government negotiating a Brexit plan that its own MPs and ministers tell me is dead. When will we pull ourselves together, as a nation?

But don't worry, your blue passport will get you an extra special long wait at passport control. And no deal could lead to continued freedom of movement anyway. Something for everyone in there.

clash I think we can already be sure of the contempt that May and the entire government hold for UK citizens - except the very wealthy spiv ones

  • 0therwise, they would not be prioritising the Tory party and their own career ambitions at the expense of making those UK citizens poorer and possible shortages of food & medicines in the near future.

I still keep suddenly being taken aback by the sheer irresponsibility and selfishness they display over Brexit
the psychopathic callous disregard for the welfare of the non-wealthy after Brexit

All this over a Tory part squabble.
In the history books, these times will be written up - together with the Trump saga - as the most disgracefully irresponsible displays ever, by governments of developed countries.

How half the population of 2 advanced countries lost all common sense and decided to trash their own countries.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/08/2018 15:05

DG You've given me yet another reason not to return to the UK
The most smothering laws of libel of any Western country

One saving grace for the US:
their first amendment right to ridicule Trump gives them more opportunity to organise the fight back than we have

Before holding the US up as a paragon of free speech, it's worth noting they invented the idea of a "natural born secret" ...

Buteo · 05/08/2018 15:35

The prolific goady Leave poster has been quiet the last few days - banned or weekend off? Or just name changing (again)?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/08/2018 15:44

Only paid for a Monday - Friday job ?

mathanxiety · 05/08/2018 16:22

Before, they weren't so open about wanting regime change in 1st world countries

The US has never been quiet about wanting regime change anywhere.

So far, it has effected regime change outside of G7/ industrialised countries, but it is important to realise that the US does not see any other country as its equal and sees its own role as exceptional, so the distinction between developed and undeveloped countries is immaterial. The US reserves to itself the right to interfere as it feels warranted in the affairs of any other countries. It's not a matter of 'if', but 'when'. If, France, for example, had ever gone commie, the US would have been there the next day.

This is another reason why the UK insistence on the 'spacial relationship' is so laughable, and also so pathetic, because it is akin to toadying up to the playground bully in order to gain status.

The latest incarnation of US exceptionalism is no different from previous ones. We only think it is because we don't broadly agree with the intervention as we did in the Cold War.

DGRossetti · 05/08/2018 16:30

it is important to realise that the US does not see any other country as its equal

I vaguely recall that at the heart, the US legal system doesn't acknowledge a "rest of the world". And having been online since 1987, I can tell you that there really are (not were, they still exist) US citizens who believe that everywhere else in the world is a state in the US. Ever had a Yank get so aggrieved that they threaten to "bust your ass" (really !!!) and "what state are you in ?" only to not believe that England (or Britain) isn't in the US ?

I have Grin

Even now, most US shopping sites don't offer a "Country" option ...

DGRossetti · 05/08/2018 17:09

Nice graphic ..remove the UK, and (if I've worked it out right) we go behind the US who would still be behind the EU.

Just seen this YouGov poll. Guess what 70% of Conservative and UKIP supporters voted for?

They'll be disappointed then ....

Transport Secretary explains again why he's NOT responsible for rail timetable problems
Speaking to the House of Commons Transport Committee, Chris Grayling insisted: “It’s not my responsibility - I don’t run the railways.”

OP posts:
DGRossetti · 05/08/2018 18:51

“It’s not my responsibility - I don’t run the railways.”

Which begs the question, who does ?

And when Brexit bombs ...

Fox: It’s not my responsibility
Raab: It’s not my responsibility
Hunt: It’s not my responsibility
May: It’s not my responsibility

Reminds me vaguely of a Readers Digest filler story about a car owner being paged over a tannoy (possibly at an auction ?).

The auctioneer kept on asking for the owner of car reg XXXXXX to contact staff. No response. After the 5th or 6th call he put his hand over the microphone and asked in a faux-whisper well how hard did you hit it ? at which point someone jumped up and said My car !

I'm here all week.

DGRossetti · 05/08/2018 18:51

By the way, I'd like some credit for not mentioning Mussolini in that previous post ...

Oh dear Sad Smile Grin

ClashCityRocker · 05/08/2018 19:21

I know bigchoc. I can't believe that there's still around half the population who seem to think that the government don't hold us voters in contempt.

I keep trying to look for the positives in brexit and failing abysmally. And actually I'm quite concerned about what the government will be able to do when they 'take back control'.

I suspect, surprise surprise, their new freedoms will not be used to the benefit of the man on the street....

ClashCityRocker · 05/08/2018 19:23

I think the only reason Theresa may is still in office is because no one wants to be responsible for the cluster fuck that is brexit.

She's a sacrificial lamb and will be ritually slaughtered by spring next year - after 29th of March of course.

I don't think BoJo would want the job, just yet. He wants to come riding in on a white charger when everyone else has done the hard work. Meanwhile, he'll play cricket.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/08/2018 20:02

I expect May to be savaged at the party conference (Sunday 30 September to Wednesday 3 October in Birmingham)
Her currrent target is to survive that

  • take cough sweets and check for falling signs behind her

Like the Perils of Penelope, she lurches from one Tory party crisis to the next

If the 1922 Committee decide to use the 48 letters they probably have, she might not survive, because Remainers and neutrals now see her blundering towards no deal.

If Tory MPs are holding back against toppling her for fear of Bojo or JRM becoming leader, they have the numbers to ensure no Ultra gets through to the last 2, for the members to vote on.

In fact the country has no time for all those rounds of leadership election and then organising a membership vote - it would take a few weeks.
So an "annointed" leader is quite likely if May goes - provided they can sit on that ambitious oaf Bojo.

Tanith · 05/08/2018 20:26

But Gove and Hunt have both said they don’t want to be PM (wide-eyed innocence).
I think I recall BoJo saying he didn’t want the job, too, once upon a time. Just as well: we’d have the Orange One on one side of the Atlantic and the Giant Lemon on this side - was it 1984 that had “Oranges and Lemons” rather prominently?

RedToothBrush · 05/08/2018 20:54

So you know the Labour who looks like she has done a Chris Huhne so there might be a by election in Peterborough if she is found guilty?

Wellllllll.....

Farage eyes Peterborough’s pro‑Brexit seat for 8th bid to become MP
The former Ukip leader could stand in a by-election as he seeks a return to frontline politics

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 05/08/2018 20:55

He's apparently denied it.

So we might take that as a good indication he's seriously considering it.

I vaguely find myself wondering if people think "The Queen" was a documentary, and peoples feelings are what's needed to change things ????

ClashCityRocker · 05/08/2018 21:13

Hmm, I don't doubt there will be a lot of sabre rattling at the party conference. I think it will be very interesting.

I just don't think anyone actually wants the job of being pm through brexit which may well save her bacon for a brief period.

Of course, a lot can happen between now and then, even with the summer recess.

ClashCityRocker · 05/08/2018 21:20

Out of interest, how does Parliament know when the electorate's feelings have changed?

I'd have thought the general election was a pretty good indication that the public were losing faith in Theresa and the tories.

Of course, we have marches, petitions etc...but I'm quite sceptical of their effectiveness, particularly petitions. I have written and will continue to write to my mp, although just get the same soundbites back.

I'm quite pissed off that the person who has the most say in brexit seems to be JRM.
