To ask if those panicking about Brexit realise they've been had?

Growingboys · 29/07/2018 19:18

Honestly, it's pathetic.

This is Project Fear mark 2, spin designed to stop Brexit happening. Politicians and wonks hope that if they spread enough fear around, which is what all these ridiculous 'prepping' threads are, they will stop us leaving the EU.

Everybody needs to calm the fuck down, stop digging their underground food stores/adding some more tins to the Ocado order, and realise this is spin, pure and simple. The world will continue to turn, and food will continue to be on supermarket shelves, regardless of what happens with Brexit.

I am very sad at the lack of sense and backbone so many people are showing here, regardless of views on Brexit.

I'm off to have a gin and put my feet up. I might even eat something from my freezer tonight rather than save it for armageddon #dicingwithdeath

I was going to say about leavers realising they've been had. It is extremely clear to anyone with a modicum of understanding, whichever flavour of poltics or stance on the EU, that a no deal brexit will result in shortages, increased prices and instability The government are only right and sensible to ask about preparations ( and it pays me to say this as I staunchly anti tory). The simple truth is that we are completely dependent on trade, and on free movement to enable us to run healthcare and agricultural services among others.

LuluJakey1 · 29/07/2018 19:33

Totally agree OP. It is the Remainers on here who are whipping it up and making nasty comments to anyone who is trying to be rational. There will be no huge difference, no shortages and no drama- only that caused by the anti-May tories and the public Remainers.

Easilyflattered · 29/07/2018 19:33

Why does everyone get so annoyed by people storing food in case? Or making plan B?

Am I asking for you to buy it? Or store it?

So fine you do your thing and I'll do mine. If I'm left with a surplus I'll get through it eventually or donate it.

"Get ready, get thru" as they say in NZ civil defence ads. It doesn't need to be hysterical to just be a bit prepared for a bumpy ride.

papayasareyum · 29/07/2018 19:33

Plumsofwrath, the problem is, Remain voters want another referendum and the only way they can see this being a possibility is with aggressive scaremongering. Heck, it might even work. I can see why they’re doing it.

UpstartCrow · 29/07/2018 19:34

In 3 years time when we are all huddled round a candle trying to wash with a chunk of ice, there will still be die hard Leavers claiming its all Project Fear and muttering about how it was the evil 'fluences of Remainers that really caused Brexit to fail.

gnomeisland · 29/07/2018 19:34

I'm not "wallowing in this, frankly quite ugly, self-pitying misery" Plumsofwrath
I just want to make have confirmation that my mum can get her life saving insulin next year. Is that too much to ask?
Currently cannot get an answer from anyone to confirm. Surely information for something as fundamental as that should be available?

LuluJakey1 · 29/07/2018 19:35

And it won't be long before other countries currently in the EU leave - Italy and Spain to start with.

IAmInsignificunt · 29/07/2018 19:36

Thanks for filling us in. I’ll be sure to let my bosses know they no longer have to worry about sourcing medications or food. Stand down everyone, stand down.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 29/07/2018 19:36

At the very least food prices are going up in April. That is almost inevitable.

DuggeeHugs · 29/07/2018 19:37

Whether you voted Remain or Leave, you are where you are. What’s the point in being so miserable, pessimistic, rude, defeatist about it?? Wouldn’t you all be better off making the best of the situation you find yourselves in and supporting each other and your government to get the best deal possible rather than wallowing in this, frankly quite ugly, self-pitying misery??!

Because this is how British people operate. We save the stiff upper lip, British bulldog backbone for fighting a common enemy. We don't waste it fighting amongst ourselves.

If you want to see desperately divided people to suddenly pull together then you must seek inspiration from the Hollywood archives Smile

user1471453601 · 29/07/2018 19:37

Isn't your question, opening poster, the equivalent of asking why most people take out home insurance? Sure, it's not necessary, but it is prudent. I'm stockpiling just in case. That seems to me to be the responsible thing to do. My house may not be burgled, but just in case, I have insurance. Brexit may not lead to food shortages, but in case it does, we will have food etc

GeorgeIII · 29/07/2018 19:38

The crazier people get over this the more I think Brexit is the best thing that could've happend to them. They need to get a grip and grow up.

gnomeisland · 29/07/2018 19:38

Growingboys - can you please link to the info about the solution to the insulin problem please.

Bananalanacake · 29/07/2018 19:39

Plums: I am also a Brit in Germany, is there anything I should be worried about. I go to London where I have a flat 4 times a year
. Hope I can still travel.

LuluJakey1 · 29/07/2018 19:39

gnome Of course your mum will have her insulin - it just won't be produced in France or Germany or wherever it comes from. It will be produced in the UK or the USA, Canada or Norway.

gnomeisland · 29/07/2018 19:40

Seriously George111 ?
You think my mum panicking because a genuine question mark hangs over how she is going to get her insulin in the event of a No Deal is the best thing that could have happened to her?

TheElementsSong · 29/07/2018 19:42

Another Brexit thread! Don’t you whinging loooooooozers realise there’s a board for this stupid topic so it doesn’t clutter up the main boards where we discuss proper stuff like pubic hair removal? I have reported this thread so it gets moved It’s sooooooo Boring! Yawn yawn eyeroll grrrr-aarrgghh etc.

Oh wait.

Where are the chorus of entirely unbiased posters who usually say that sort of thing when anyone mentions the “B” word?

Surely they’re not on this very thread typing agreements with the OP? Nah, must be my imagination Grin

IceCreamFace · 29/07/2018 19:42

The crazier people get over this the more I think Brexit is the best thing that could've happend to them. They need to get a grip and grow up.

Surely you realise how silly this sounds. The fact that people are worried makes you think it's a good idea. Never mind many of those people are those at the top of their fields in economics, European politics, people who actually work in the NHS. If all those people are riled up in must be a good idea right? And if these people somehow manage to make it work out OK after enormous amounts of stress and extra work you'll be gloating that you knew it would all be OK.

colouringinagain · 29/07/2018 19:43

OP can you please reassure me that come April my ex will be able to get their anti-psychotics and anti-depressants that keep them from killing themselves.

No?

Don't you be telling me to calm the fuck down. This is serious.

IceCreamFace · 29/07/2018 19:45

Of course your mum will have her insulin - it just won't be produced in France or Germany or wherever it comes from. It will be produced in the UK or the USA, Canada or Norway.

I assume you work in the NHS and know how easy it is to source medicine and how quickly it is to find a new source? Because there's a giant surplus of production that can meet the sudden demand. Or do you actually have no idea what you're talking about because you have no expertise at all?

gnomeisland · 29/07/2018 19:45

LuluJakey it is not produced in the UK. Not a drop.
Do you have any idea what is involved in setting up labs and distribution networks from scratch to produce enough insulin for well over a million people? Or to set up trade deals, regulatory frameworks, standards etc to work with other countries in a short time frame?

What line of work are you in? I expect this is the first time you have ever had to consider this problem. Belief you me, our family have been actively trying to find out what solutions are available - and guess what? It is not as simple as you are implying.

Strongmummy · 29/07/2018 19:46

Op - can you enlighten us on where we’re going to get vital medicines , including chemo treatment under no deal? I’m not panicking but I’m very concerned indeed.

MissBartlettsconscience · 29/07/2018 19:47

It is of course easy to find an entirely new supply of life saving medication at a short notice, especially from the US.

That's why the government are finally starting the inquiry into the contaminated blood scandal when 1000s of people were infected with hiv and hep C from US blood donors. Nothing to worry about there.

ForalltheSaints · 29/07/2018 19:49

Wanting people to be prepared should the friends of Jacob Rees-Mogg and the DUP scupper a deal is not project fear mk2. If there is no deal then there will be a level of panic buying, the only question is by how much and what things people panic buy.

Plumsofwrath · 29/07/2018 19:49

Insulin shortage??!!

If the British government can’t ensure an adequate national supply of a basic drug like insulin in conditions that aren’t nuclear fall-out, you’ve got bigger problems on your hands than leaving the EU!

I’m bewildered! Your not too distant descendants ruled half the planet and you’re worried about insulin supplies if you leave a political/economic union of 27 countries?!
