They were supposedly 'convinced' by a pack of lies that is now subject to legal proceedings. There have already been fines.

It clearly escaped your notice that neither side covered itself in glory in the referendum campaign.

However, the legal procedings you refer to relate to expenditure and procedure and not to the quality of the information and have been robustly challenged, a number of factors suggesting the Electoral Commission, or individuals within it are not impartial, instead being motivated by political considerations. Indeed this whole issue appeared to have been initially brought to notice, as I remember, by the aggrieved party in what seemed to be a 'lovers' spat'. The judgement may well be overturned.

The referendum result is in no way invalidated by this, and there is absolutely no reason to believe it would have been any different if these allegations had not been made.

Brxiter

TheElementsSong · 17/07/2018 21:29

I recognise many of the names, and I can bet your bottom dollar that nearly half of the posters are originally from non-EU nations via Europe. That is their reason for being Remainers.

Wow. Care to fully unpack your entire meaning for the whole audience?

Sorry about that pressed post by accident.

Brexit myth: EU is autocratic. It isn't it is a democratic institution.

Brexit myth: democracy means the majority always wins. It doesn't.

Brexit myth: we have lost sovereignty. The U.K. should be forced to stick to the result of the referendum. The referendum was advisory and a key part of British sovereignty is that Parliament is sovereign.

I would like to add a wow as well please...

I would vote the same as i did last time, dh would do the same, and now ds1 would be eligible to vote

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 17/07/2018 21:43

That was originally started many months ago by Leave supporters but hijacked by Remainers. The latter were welcome to participate, but they didn't want that, they wanted to take over the thread and they have

Thats just silly

Yes I'd vote the same

StrangeLookingParasite · 17/07/2018 21:51

No, it didn't 'escape my notice', it's just that remain has currently had no charges of impropriety laid, nor leaders who come right out and admit they lied.

The best part of all this? I didn't even get a vote. I am in the entirely unenviable position of having all the consequences, and absolutely no control whatsoever.

IWasntThere · 17/07/2018 21:52

Yes. Leave.

And as an example of one of many reasons why, I give you Martin Selmayr, appointed in February this year to the role of Deputy Secretary-General of the Commission, and then minutes later to the vacancy of Secretary General - a post only open following the announcement (in the same meeting) of the departure of the then incumbent.

Moussemoose · 17/07/2018 21:55

Your issue with the appoint is?

Appointing someone to a job isn't sufficient reason to dislike the whole institution.

No, Rufus, not silly. Westministenders thread began late last year. Follow the chronology and you will see who started that thread. Leavers were keen to converse with everyone joining the thread and it worked well for some time, until a large pack of haranguing Remainers decided to scupper it. It is now the best-known Remainers Echo Chamber online .... they just talk to each other now, no one else.

TheElementsSong · 17/07/2018 22:01

Still hoping for an unpacking of "originally from non-EU nations via Europe. That is their reason for being Remainers."

I mean, there must be a wholesomely positive reasoning for this line of thinking, yes?

Westministenders thread began late last year.

This is so wrong, on so many levels (together with the "started by a Leaver" thing), that it renders me (almost) speechless.

ScreamingValenta · 17/07/2018 22:07

Yes (remain).

IWasntThere · 17/07/2018 22:07

My issue with the appointment is that the Commission is the route in for all EU legislation - MEPs can vote only on legislature proposed by the commission (this is the democratic deficit that in my view never quite gets explained away). For control of this institution to be passed to one man who no one knew was eligible (because he wasn't until he was promoted to deputy - not at the sufficient grade), and when no one knew the role was open is opaque to say the least!

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 17/07/2018 22:09

britt

Sorry, im never very clear

I think its silly that the leavers on the thread decided to (oh god i want to say leave) no longer engage with the thread

I just...urgh...what?

Immediately after the referendum, Leave voters who'd been bullied off the general referendum threads started a thread intended for Leave voters who wanted to discuss the result from a Leavers' perspective. That was invaded and taken over by Remainers too. There was nowhere on MN where Leavers could talk without being subjected to abuse.

This thread, up to now, has been a haven of peace and tranquillity, compared to what went on back then.
