Bit late and didn't realise the last thread was so close to the end... so this is a very quick OP

What do you think the secret continency plan name the government have in place for the No Deal?

Suggestions Please

{most of the juveniles live in the south east corner around the German bight, whereas the adults tend to congregate around the Shetland Isles prior to spawning at various sites along the British coast. North Sea cod are found throughout the North Sea but prefer spawning along the border between UK and Norwegian waters.}
Taken from 'the conversation'.
Made me chuckle at the thought of marauding 'juveniles' hanging out around the German Bight, no doubt smoking behind the bike sheds.

Excellent thread on firefighters asking for help:

(shocked to see my next county has had 40% cut to fire service )

Recent Swedish radio programme interviewing Carole Cadwallada. Not available on britain. (women journalists, facts, journalism, carole cadwallada getting extended interview etc etc) 24 minutes in is brexit.

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2018 21:43

Don't pity me over the fires. Its just a passing thing here really in comparison to places closer. My point was more about just how far the effect of the fires is being felt.

I agree the response of government has been poor.

But then we are the north. And the north is irrelevant and unimportant. See Northern Rail.

BREAK - The #Amesbury couple critically ill in hospital in #Salisbury were poisoned by the same nerve agent - #novichok - used against Sergei and Yulia #Skripal, Met Police confirm.

Maybe the football is coming home, according to the plan?

Myrnafoy · 04/07/2018 22:27

Red, my road has been closed except for access as it's one of the main ones up to winter hill. Tonight the smoke has been especially pungent - definitely a kind of smog sitting over the area. Has to shut all the windows and bring washing in Really feel for the firemen and ancillary staff. All morning we could hear the whirring of the helicopter as it flew backwards and forwards transporting water. Can't understand why the army hasn't been enlisted here as well

Talkstotrees · 04/07/2018 22:34

Awful for all close to the fires Flowers

Maybe the football is coming home, according to the plan?

God do the Russia's think we are in with that much of a chance of winning the tournament?!

Myrnafoy, that's awful. I feel for you. I hope its over soon but I hear two more weeks of this weather. The government are trying to do the barest minimum over it all. The fire service, probably will struggle to cover the over time bill out of it, afterwards too, I'm sure.

Jaguar Land Rover's £80bn UK investment plan at risk after hard Brexit

Firm says its 40,000 employees and five-year investment plan are in jeopardy from uncertainty

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/04/jaguar-land-rovers-80bn-uk-investment-plan-at-risk-after-hard-brexit

The company said it needed greater certainty to continue to invest heavily in the UK,
in a statement released two days before Theresa May is due to meet ministers at Chequers to discuss the post-Brexit deal they will seek with Brussels.

“A bad Brexit deal would cost Jaguar Land Rover more than £1.2bn profit each year,”
said the firm’s chief executive, Ralf Speth.

“As a result, we would have to drastically adjust our spending profile
– we have spent around £50bn in the UK in the past five years,
with plans for a further £80bn more in the next five. This would be in jeopardy should we be faced with the wrong outcome.”

If the UK automotive industry is to remain globally competitive
and protect 300,000 jobs in Jaguar Land Rover and our supply chain, we must retain tariff and customs-free access to trade and talent with no change to current EU regulations.”

Just how many job losses will make May see sense and tell the ERG people to take a running jump?

All this for 'face saving' for literally a handful of people, Mrs May and half a dozen others.
Why can't they just say 'Sorry we messed up' and revoke A50?

lonelyplanetmum · 05/07/2018 07:48

Just how many job losses will make May see sense and tell the ERG people to take a running jump?

I was just thinking about this looking at a selection of warnings there's been. So whose views do we prefer- the ERG or experts ? Michael Gove famously disliked experts, thereby annexing a load of voters who think their University of life experience trumps expertise .

It's different isn't it though? if you think of experts not as a generic group but as individual trade industry specialists...

These are just a few specialist warnings...

Another example of why British democracy is a sham, and how aspects of the legal system contribute to the sham.

(Long read; topic - Windscale/Sellafield, plutonium in the Irish Sea).

The health consequences of living next to a British nuclear waste dump
is yet another reminder of the callousness of Britain towards the RoI over so much of our mutual history

Shame there aren't any warnings from Xylophone manufacturers, Zoologists, or Yacht clubs.

Has anyone heard from the Quilt and Eiderdown Guilds ?

A "pipeline" of EU doctors and nurses will be needed after Brexit due to staff shortages, the group representing Welsh health bodies has warned.

(contd)

Hard to muster any sympathy when it's what they voted for.

54321go · 05/07/2018 09:01

I think nuclear reprocessing should be relocated to Battersea (the old power station site) or some other London location on the Thames. It has a good supply of water for cooling and excellent access by train. At that point safety might then be a bit further up the agenda rather than a run down corner of the North West.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/07/2018 09:07

lonelyplanetmum Thanks for assembling that very sobering list Sad

prettybird · 05/07/2018 09:09

File under "some people are worth than other people" Hmm

Along the same lines, Trident supposedly can't be moved to Devonport because it would be "too dangerous" the population of Glasgow doesn't count HmmAngry

https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2013/jan/04/mod-nuclear-submarines-scotland-plymouth

DGRossetti · 05/07/2018 09:10

Ideally we need a new nuclear paradigm - one that isn't predicated on providing fuel for weapons.

The Thorium cycle seems promising

whatisnuclear.com/thorium.html

and really is somewhere the UK - ideally in the EU - should be investing in research.

Ultimately, most (but not all) of mankinds problems could be solved with more "cheap" energy. Desalination and agriculture spring to mind.

54321go · 05/07/2018 09:10

A further advantage of Battersea would be that if there was a 'spill' the Thames barrier can be raised to prevent it going out to sea, until they work out what to do with the mess. Having real toxic waste slopping about by the Houses of Parliament (again) might change a few minds.

DGRossetti · 05/07/2018 09:28

I don't think industrial use of the Thames has any part in the plans of all the overlooking luxury flat builders.
