And in a very serious note
www.buzzfeed.com/katiejmbaker/vulnerable-women-routinely-jailed-false-rape?utm_term=.fll38ADgP#.wk76k5qpP

Women routinely procedures to have gone to the police for rape and the accused has not been found guilty.
That is scary.
Still attacking the most vulnerable.

The problem with Brexit dragging on, is the danger that it will become part of the internal political debate of the constituent EU27 members where their equivalents of Farage, JRM and the ERG are just waiting to make political capital out of it - especially if it means diverting attention from their own deficiencies. None of which is good for the UKs position.

If EU countries start blaming their own woes on Brexit, in a weird parallel to the UKs blaming the EU for it's own decisions, we might be in for some very interesting times.

DGRossetti · 29/06/2018 14:32

Oh dear, we might have food shortage and even worse we might get shortages of gin.

Unless you distil your own Grin.

Yet another example of why the EU wants ECJ protection for the rights of its citizens in the UK

MPs condemn Home Office over detained Windrush pair

How horrid it must have been after 50 years in the UK, a full working life, expecting to enjoy a peaceful retirement,
but instead the Home Office played manic Monopoly with them:

"Do not collect pension. Go straight to jail"
and be told you'll be expelled to a totally foreign country, with no contacts ot means of support

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jun/29/mps-condemn-home-office-over-detained-windrush-pair

The Home Office behaved in a “shocking” manner towards two Windrush citizens, Paulette Wilson and Anthony Bryan, who were wrongly sent to immigration detention centres before planned removals from the UK,
despite them being continuously resident for around 50 years, a committee of MPs and peers has ruled.

All of my families efforts trying assure my DF that now DM is dead he's still able to be buried next to her in the UK were blown out of the water when the Windrush scandal erupted. (Probably not helped by the fact that DF worked with Caribbean immigrants who came to the UK in the 1950s). It's the only thing he cares about.

Note the references to Brexit.

I bet Us firms can't wait for Brexit now. They'll be able to set their prices higher for the UK without worry.

Presumably we can make our own printers when we're not picking fruit ?

mozzybites · 29/06/2018 15:37

In the food and drink industry the individuals I have spoken to from companies already manufacturing and distributing in the UK are thinking it is going to be a bad thing for their business and are scaling back investment, those who haven't got any involvement are considering it an opportunity. But if you look they they haven't moved into UK it is nearly always food safety rules and they are banking on them being weakend. The companies already here providing jobs and investment, working to the food standards are talking about higher costs and lower opportunities as well as interrupted supply chains and fewer export opportunities. They are talking to the government but it just isn't listening.

Is there anything that the HO is doing that isnt shocking atm?.?

Absolutely nothing. As part of my DW's application for naturalisation (now taken over 18 months - see posts passim), they required my DW to send them her biometrics, allowing us 14 days to do it, so luckily we weren't on holiday. The nearest post office which can handle biometrics enrolment is 40 minutes away, but she went and did it and received confirmation that it had gone to the HO.

I then get an email telling me we've failed to produce the biometrics in the prescribed period. When I explained that we'd done it straight away, they said "it doesn't appear that your enrolment was successful on the system". So it's us who've failed, not them! I suspect they've lost it or it's been subsumed under the welter of documentation the harrassed case-worker is trying to handle.

They asked for evidence from the post office, which I've scanned and sent to them. One week later, still nothing, not even acknowledgment of receipt. Just another hurdle along the 18-month course.Hmm

So, no, there isn't anything at all which the HO does which even surprises me any more.

The nice little company we used to buy our cat food from - The Happy Kitty Company - has folded due to Brexit. They sold imported German pet foods and the slump in the pound after the referendum killed their business.

How many more SMEs are quietly going under, while Airbus etc capture the headlines?

54321go · 29/06/2018 16:44

@Andshe.
It is of course very regrettable that little companies will fold but it needs the 'big boys' to state they are leaving to try and get it through to people what is happening. While I have every sympathy with 'the little guys' the majority of the public won't really notice as they can't see the trend. The analogy is not quite right but if you now go out looking for your German catfood, you may find no one is stocking it.

BrexitWife · 29/06/2018 16:57

Hasenstein I’ll be honest, this is what’s stopped me from applying for PR. I couldn’t cope with the stress and anxiety linked with that (the fact I am self employed didnt help either).
I feel for you.
And I am more and more disgusted by the way they are dealing with people.
People fgs. They would treat animals better!

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 29/06/2018 16:58

My point wasn't that a fuss should be made - it absolutely is the big boys who should be kicking off and I hope they're listened to.

It's that when people are totting up the job losses, there are likely to be a huge number of small businesses that are unable to keep going, which aren't being added to the tally.

And no - no-one is stocking the cat food. We've had to order it in bulk direct from Germany.

DGRossetti · 29/06/2018 17:03

does anyone remember "Spitting Image" during the 80s recession lampooning the way the news used to chart job losses - and gains ?

Meanwhile, I see Brexit has bubbled to lead story on the BBC. Not because anything has happened from when it wasn't lead story, just an excuse for them to run the same story with 3 different bylines.

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 29/06/2018 17:14

One thing Brexit may be good for - satire and music.

The only thing that makes my blood run as cold as the prospect of No Deal is the Two Tribes annihilation mix.

KennDodd · 29/06/2018 17:18

Second ref, I think question should be -

Do you want this to drag on for at least another decade, election after election and never off the news. Leave

Do you just want it to all go away and get back to normal. Remain

If only that had been the question. As Leavers are so often claiming to be bored by it all now I would have predicted a Remain landslide.

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 29/06/2018 17:20

Sadly I don't think things can go back to normal either way, now.

DGRossetti · 29/06/2018 17:31

Thing is it was trumpeted loud and clear before the referendum that in the event of a leave vote, the next 10 years would disappear to Brexit.

We've lost two already. And I'd say it's still 10 years.

Just think of all the things parliament should be doing. Changing to law to prevent abusers facing their victims in court is one, by the way.

MrsRRR · 29/06/2018 17:36

I must admit to showing ds1 YouTube vids of spitting image...

He got great mocks results so has gone off to badminton a happy bunny :)

In other food bank related news...Looks like we may have premises :)

Hasenstein · 29/06/2018 17:40

Brexitwife

I quite understand your viewpoint. It is a long, slow, expensive and stressful procedure, particularly if you go beyond PR and aim for naturalisation (in DW's case dual nationality). Anyway, Permanent Residence isn't all it's cracked up to be - if you leave the country for more than 2 years, you have to do it all again. What's "Permanent" about that?

Peregrina · 29/06/2018 17:47

The BBC headline has disappeared now, but earlier May was telling the EU that things needed to be speeded up. This is a bit rich coming from her, who hasn't even been able to take agreed proposals to Brussels for this week's meeting.
