While MN is not a 'political' forum do you nor see that although Brexit might APPEAR boring, when the lying and misinformation stops REAL things WILL happen. I am not saying how anyone should vote or think but I strongly believe that everyone should pay attention to what is happening, READ information from a variety of sources, THINK then come to their own conclusions. At the moment it seems to be a massive game of 'Simon says'. Simon says jump off a cliff.

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2018 12:51

MN doesn't like politics much atm.

Too much like hard work to maintain civility.

They just want to take a path of least resistance tbh. Controversy isn't in their advertising strategy.

Trouble is, all the pesky women who DO want to do politics...

Why should be Brexit bill be 'cancelled' if there is a no deal?

Who said it would ? (We can safely discard anything the UK government says). The UK might not pay it - after all that's what "no deal" is. But it wouldn't change the fact that it exists.

Anyway, if it's "no deal" you can't dispute it. After all, you're not dealing

We're back to cake-and-eat-it.

The question would then be, how would the rest of the world view such shenanigans, and what would that mean for the UK ? Immediate loss of any investment ratings for a start. Not that I have much time for any of the rating agencies, but the people that invest amazingly still do. And the flight of companies and agencies from the UK will be as nothing to the sudden cessation of inward investment.

Who'd invest in the UK ? They might not get their money back.

lonelyplanetmum · 29/06/2018 13:05

I'm I just cynical or optimistic ...but are we building up to something? We've had the payment to the NHS, and now the closed migrant centres for asylum seekers ( which can be spun as a doing something about whichever Polish and Romanian workers Leavers were concerned about ).

Curiously there's been scant attention over the last week regarding the border and as far as I can see attempts at doing anything about it have slipped down or off the agenda.

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 29/06/2018 13:10

We're building up to something alright. Whether it's a halt to the madness, or a full on descent into the ninth circle of hell, I don't know.

I know which I'd bet on though.

"Huge and serious" differences remain between the UK and EU in Brexit talks, the EU's chief negotiator has warned.

Michel Barnier invited UK negotiators back to Brussels next Monday, warning: "The time is very short."

(contd)

Ping.

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2018 13:16

a full on descent into the ninth circle of hell

Are you also taking bets on whether the US get there before or after us?

OP posts:

@Andshestepped wondered if No deal would also mean 'no bill'.

If the UK doesn't pay the bill I would expect all these other countries queuing up with their good deals to demand cash with order, like companies and individuals with poor credit rating.
The existing bill is equivalent to sharing a pizza with friends and you've eaten your piece then got up to leave, the bill needs paying.
I admit I am struggling with the logic and timing of the meetings yesterday and today, and an invite by Mr Barnier to continue on Monday, but the Gov sleepover and planning session is not until next week. What is going on there?

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 29/06/2018 13:28

Red sorry that book is closed!

WhollyFather · 29/06/2018 13:37

The 'no deal' plan isn't secret and is called WTO.

We do not owe the EU anything over and above our regular payments up until the day we leave.

54321go - the money the EU has demanded is not in respect of goods delivered or services already provided. They are basically trying to insist we bribe them, but that's how a lot of business is done on the continent. If we leave with no deal, the EU won't get a penny.

The meeting yesterday was not about Brexit but about controlling migration, after the disaster Merkel has made of it. She is desperately trying to save face and cling on to power but she's on borrowed time.

And we are not descending anywhere. We are getting out of a corrupt, anti-democratic organisation we ought never to have joined, and which is pretty clearly falling apart anyway.

Brexit will be fine and you'll thank us one day.

prettybird · 29/06/2018 13:41

Where is the justified outrage AngryShock, nay stramash, if not from the general population who have proven themselves to be apathetic and ignorant , but from the MSM that FIFTEEN MONTHS after May CHOSE to invoke A50 and set the clock ticking and THREE MONTHS before the EU needs to know the final details so that the E27 can vote on it in their respective countries, May is ONLY NOW getting the full Cabinet together to agree what sort of Brexit the UK actually wants ShockConfused

The MSM should be screaming about such incompetence. Instead, it is complicit in portraying stances such as "the EU is being told by May that a sense of urgency is required" ConfusedAngry

Icantreachthepretzels · 29/06/2018 13:41

ooh look whollyfather has arrived. That means brexit is going badly. Do the brexit trolls and Russian shills know that their appearance actually has the opposite from intended affect? My spirits soar when they arrive because I know they must be worried if they are posting here.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 29/06/2018 13:44

I feel a lot better now we've had a chipolata visit.

topcat1980 · 29/06/2018 13:47

"They are basically trying to insist we bribe them"

Not at all, they are insisting that we make payments to cover commitments we made whilst in the union.

We can leave all we like without paying, but then the EU can easily claim the same of the UK's share of assets within the EU. If we want our share of assets then we will be paying. It also means that UK employees of the EU will not be getting

Oh and it also sets a very bad tone for any other future negotiations with any other country, because if you just walk away from your agreed commitments then it means you are an unreliable partner.

Merkel might be on borrowed time but the migrant crisis was effecting the Southern EU states long before she interevened.

Another Brexit fan who claims the EU is falling apart, it doesn't actually look that way. What is your evidence that it is corrupt.

No one will thank you for brexit, ever, you will have to own your Pyrrhic victory though.

mozzybites · 29/06/2018 13:51

It is really interesting seeing how Brexit is being talked about in the US media. Yesterday we had a scrolling line on CNN telling us that the EU were meeting to discuss Brexit but due to lack of progress they had moved on the talk about migrant issues, it then noted that migrant numbers had fallen sharply.
So, there is so little progress that Brexit can't even be discussed and migrant issues, heavily falling numbers not with standing replace the topic. The U.K. Is a much smaller country than it thinks it is and much less important .

Peregrina · 29/06/2018 13:55

WoolleyFather more like.

How are your gardens getting on? My lawn looks a mess because it's so dry, but that will mostly sort itself out when the weather breaks. There may still be a couple of bare patches which need reseeding.

mozzybites · 29/06/2018 13:55

Also if you think the EU is an anti- democratic and corrupt organisation wait until you head out into the world to do your free trade deals, I'm not sure what governance levels you are expecting but I think you may be in for a disappointment.

TatianaLarina · 29/06/2018 13:56

Bless Danny Dyer. (Not something I ever thought I’d say).

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2018 13:56

The 'no deal' plan isn't secret and is called WTO.

Pray tell us about WTO and how it works.

And then how it works at Dover... And at Airbus in Broughton...

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 29/06/2018 13:57

Cos us idiots here have no idea whatsoever and now you can tell us ALL about it in detail.

OP posts:
Peregrina · 29/06/2018 14:01

Perhaps WoolleyFather will read a few of our threads and then tell us what he has learnt, while pretending that we don't know.

54321go · 29/06/2018 14:07

Whatever any one member of the EU 'says' there are 26/27 others scrutinising it in respect to how it will affect their country. Granted it is a bit 'inefficient' thus 'wasteful' but mostly necessary.
While Whollyfather is welcome to air his/her views it would help to have some basis in reality.
I would not call 'losing' £440 million a week 'ascending', so it may be better to accept it is 'descending'. While Mrs Merkel may be 'on borrowed time' politically she is relatively even handed and fair. Should she be replaced by another leader who is angry with Britain we are stuffed.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/06/2018 14:09

cos almost no country trades with the EU - or the rest of the world- on pure WTO terms.
There are always Mutual Recognition Agreements etc

In addition to losing the 50 or so FTAs the EU has with non-EU countries, or is currently negotiating,
the UK also loses about 800 other trade arrangements with non-EU countries

and the ability to export any agricultural / food products to the EU
and to export any services to the EU, not just financial services

and loses the right to certify any of its manufactured components, or complete products, like aircraft - so no country in the world will want to buy them until that's sorted

even the right to certify any UK airports - so civil aircraft from other countries around the world can't take off / land in the UK

and EURATOM and so many other agencies

So WTO would be a catastrophe for the UK economy
Even the govt's own impact reports agree.

prettybird · 29/06/2018 14:25

We've been through these points before. Don't let whollyfather derail the discussions while we have to trollsplain them to him yet again Hmm

www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/brexit-food-drink-shortages-gin-cheese-beer-crumpets-european-union-a8422831.html

Oh dear, we might have food shortage and even worse we might get shortages of gin.
How is MN going to survive??
