Westmistenders: 'No Deal please; We're British'

It has to be said that its almost as if Tory Rebels are too polite to challenge the PM.

But the stakes are getting higher and higher as it becomes more and more apparent that it is a clear choice between a chaotic no deal situation or a BINO and there is no alternative to that.

If the Tory Rebels don't show their grit and are not prepared to be as strong in their determination as the Brexiteers - out of almost politeness and obligation - then No Deal awaits.

As things move forward, the threat to May once again re-emerges too. If May doesn't do what the ERG say they are minded and will try to oust her. They have nothing to lose by it.

The Tory knives are hidden behind backs one again. Waiting.

Which way will the Withdrawal Bill go? Which way will the Trade Bill later this month go?

We are running out of time and options: for either a deal or no deal.

Time has already run out for many ordinary people - they just might not know that yet, but the decision has already be made about their future.

'short term cash flow issues resulting in food bank demand'

'destitution and hunger'

What's in a name, eh?

Mistigri · 17/06/2018 08:54

"your cottage industry"

This might be the most repellant thing I read today.

Kofa · 17/06/2018 08:55

Mrs Reynolds don't rise to the bait. Good ol' flip flop over there is just trying to rise you by being a goady cow.

Nick Clegg @ nick_clegg
The belief that freedom of movement is an untouchable principle cannot remain unchallenged. EU leaders increasingly recognise this, and an overture to the U.K. on both external and internal immigration could be a crucial move. My new @FT column

Mrs R huge thanks and respect to you for your invaluable efforts yesterday.

On a micro scale our activities yesterday illustrate the really problem in this country. You raised £300 for a Food bank.

By contrast I was at a big London state primary in an affluent area of London. I took about £400 running two stalls at the school fair. There were at least 12 other activities, book and toy stall , tombolas , raffle, barbecue etc. I don't know but based on previous experience guess that the fair will have fundraised at least £10,000 for the PTA.

Although it's a state primary and like the rest of the country struggles from lack of public funding. But the PTA is able to fund raise and subsidise equipment etc significantly.

I don't know if it's relevant or not but to my observation the people helping and donating yesterday included those born in China, Poland, Sweden, Germany, Greece, Ireland,Poland, South Africa, USA, India, Iran, and Japan.
I do think the amount raised contrasts starkly with the Foodbank.

It’s almost like you invented poor folk
Straight out of the 'banality of evil' (Hannah Arendt) hand book.

Sorry for typos- can't be bothered to go downstairs for my specs!

Such ugly and cruel sentiments from Hey but I’m going to assume it’s an individual characteristic rather than a Leaver mindset.

Peregrina · 17/06/2018 08:58

Troll time again.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 17/06/2018 09:00

From the full facts website:

So what’s causing the surge in food bank use? Of course, more food banks is a big part of it, meeting demand that may have existed before they arrived. There is also good evidence that changes to the benefit system have played a part in pushing up use of food banks, as well as more factors like low incomes and debt. What’s very hard to do is to say how much of the increase is down to each of these.

Peregrina · 17/06/2018 09:02

Who was the Tory who was extolling Workhouses - perhaps that is who we have bobbing up here?

For what it's worth, it is possible for the wealthy to decline to a position to need them: Great grandfather blued in the family fortune, and only just avoided it because GF took his parents in.

MrsR ✊✊✊ Thank you Flowers

mrsreynolds · 17/06/2018 09:10

"Your cottage industry"

Jesus christ.

The sheer malevolence in your words should shame you.

However I shall take the advice of posters and stop rising to the bait.

Re: pta. Yeah. Ours is the same. It's great the kids get access to chrome books but some of those kids go hungry in the holidays...

Cannot believe TM has decided to meet the bus pledge
Things must be worse than I thought. Is this how she is placating the ERG?

Don't get me started on chrome books MrsR.......... Grin

Tantalising glimpse of an EU compromise on freedom of movement

'Brexit' is really old news. Does anyone remember what music was popular when that opinion poll was conducted?

EU27 have important things to sort out.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 17/06/2018 09:18

Annandale

I admire your commitment to hysteria but the fact remains: if you offer a free good people will take it.

Does that mean the current benefits circus is acceptable? No

Does the existence of food banks mean actual levels of (relative) poverty are any higher than they have ever been? No

To say that the UK is (or was) the 5th richest country out of 150 plus is a shocking indictment to the governance. It must put us somewhere near some of the gulf states where there is no social provision, some 'own' unimaginable wealth and the vast majority have a tent and enough food for a few weeks.
Regarding the food banks, the first 'conclusion' suggests that due to the inability of the government to actually help people who are suffering due to 'welfare incompetence' food banks are necessary.
Secondly, while 'free food' is a lifeline (literally) for some, many of those have greater pride in themselves and would be quite embarrassed to need them but are forced to due to iten 1 and the way that the uncivilised society promoted by (primarily Tory) policies makes a sustainable life nearly impossible.
Opening the discussion wider EVERYONE needs somewhere to live and food to eat, sufficient to stay healthy. No one NEEDS alcohol, cigarettes/Vape, mobile phone, TV, gym membership, car etc.
The things that are NEEDED do not have to be expensive in a 'whole country' approach. The pricing of houses is ridiculous in the UK born of outright greed.
House builders don't want to build 'affordable houses, they want PROFIT so they pay lip service to the planners to get new estates approved, build the 'executive homes' and somehow when it gets to the 'affordable' homes and infrastructure (a school or public space/buildings) things get rather quiet and somehow fail to materialise. They don't get fined or taken to task for failing their planning commitments. My thoughts would be to turn the planning scheme around such that the affordable/social housing and facilities get built completed and occupied first before any 'executive' houses are started. The government could legislate to do this but it won't because guess who the major contributors to the parties are?

Peregrina · 17/06/2018 09:24

Cannot believe TM has decided to meet the bus pledge

Is this going to buy her a few votes, or will people have longer memories?

Which budget will the money be taken from? I.e. which group of already poor people are going to have more taken from them. I don't believe for one moment she will take it from the rich.

mrsreynolds · 17/06/2018 09:29

What brexit dividend?

Even her own DexEU say it's going to be a disaster....

annandale · 17/06/2018 09:29

Enjoy a happy day of euphemisms Hey.

While the concept of universal housing and provision of basic food for all might sond like an expensive goal for any government it might be interesting to look at this in a different way.
If you live in a 'naice' house with all the trappings and you have others around you, either literally next door or next town who are below the breadline there will be a temptation for those to steal. I am not excusing those with 'issues' with drugs or alcohol, that is a different matter.
Everyone feels most comfortable associating with people of a roughly similar standard of living. Countries with governments who have grasped these thoughts and acted have a much happier populace with reduced crime. Once you drop NEED out of the equation you can then crack down hard on those who steal/cheat.
I wonder if my kitchen maid has finished peeling my grapes for my lunch yet. Actually it is very quiet I wonder what my gardener is up to, the croquet lawn needs mowing.
