Not the Brexit Arms

Since BrexitArmsLandlady says she isn't starting anymore threads here's a place to discuss Brexit developments for those that still want to.

It never ceases to amaze me what a shambles this is.

The cabinet still can't even agree what we want, let alone what we're going to get.

@surferjet
That’s why ( a minority) ) of remainers don’t want England to win the World Cup, because if we do, you think politicians will use it to our advantage & that’s your worst nightmare, the UK having any advantages. You’re only happy when you think Brussels have the upper hand

Thats some leap you ve made there! the WC gives remainers and leavers a chance to celebrate and be happy that England are finally realising their promise at footie and possibly put their differences to one side.... not for you though, as you appear to be only happy when stirring up division!
Regardless of what we win at any sport, it ll mean nothing at an UK/EU level.
It does however show the level of stupidity some in the UK have if they think otherwise.

pointythings · 08/07/2018 14:33

Surferjet was also the one complaining that England didn't do well in Eurovision because all the spiteful Europeans (like Israel) wouldn't give them any points...

FWIW I think the current England team are doing really well and teaching the so-called 'big' footballing nations that football is a team effort where collaboration and hard work pay off. Now what does that remind me of...

DaisyTwirl · 08/07/2018 14:54

I'm sure the players are over the moon to continually be defined by their ethnicity/immigration status and be used as a virtue signalling tool.

PineappleSunrise · 08/07/2018 16:05

I read surfer's interjection in which assumed that everyone she disagrees with hates the England team as a form of virtue signalling. Virtue signalling requires assuming that others are not as virtuous as the signaller, and then the "virtue" can be claimed by the signaller. In surfer's case, she wanted to signal her true blue patriotism, so she has to make out that anyone who disagrees with her is some sort of national enemy.

bellinisurge · 08/07/2018 16:12

Stop politicising the World Cup. Voted Remain. Would love England to win.

pointythings · 08/07/2018 16:17

I didn't vote at all, being an EU immigrant. I just like seeing an underdog win, and England is definitely that. I'd be just as happy with a Croatia or Belgium win. France, not so much. I can't support my own team (Holland) because they are useless and failed to qualify, and should be taking lessons in team ethos from the Dutch women's team.

bearbehind · 08/07/2018 16:34

There's definitely a lesson to be learnt from the England team.

They're doing well because they are putting the team first and it's not a bunch of egos fighting each other, which has been the case previously.

It's actually a lesson for Brexit negiotiations- we need to be thinking about the good of the country, not the whim of those who can't even define what they want.

When the vote was taken 2 years ago, and even before that my thoughts were that the UK+NI NEEDED a really good negotiating team to either work with the EU and resolve some differences OR to put together a realistic strategy for getting out. In a way at that time it could have worked either way.
Instead we have had 2 years and more of bickering with no plan that would benefit the UK+NI. It is now obvious that there are no good, effective negotiators with a unified plan so anything less than complete REMAIN will result in a massive downturn in the UK+NI fortunes.

I'm really loving watching them play & in interviews etc - this is the first time since 1998 that I've felt excited by & invested in an England team.

Long may it continue!

Valanice1989 · 08/07/2018 19:50

I'm utterly bewildered by the claim that if England win the World Cup, politicians will be able to use it to the UK's advantage Confused What do you mean by that, surferjet?

But I’m happy with the way things are going so far. There was always going to be some compromise & most people accept that.

What compromise(s) are you talking about?

Peregrina · 08/07/2018 21:18

UK includes NI, although most people including the Tories, do tend to forget this.

I don't recall surferjet talking about compromises before. A quick advanced search does show that surferjet was no prophet and that the Tories were going to smash the 2017 election with a landslide victory... and that Theresa May would get on with negotiating without anyone trying to stop it i.e. the suggestion is that it would all be plain sailing.

17th May last year for those interested.

(Trump accent) fake news

Leavers have had their expectations dumbed down to the point where they'll literally accept anything that has a 'we've left badge' on it.

The fact is, because they never had an outline of what Brexit would actually look like in practice, it's not been too hard to manage their expectations.

That's why this is all so fucking annoying.

They're not bothered about the the detail; they just want to say 'we've left'

I've long thought the answer is for the Daily Mail to publish front page headlines saying 'WE'VE LEFT' and then it will all be over.

@bear
Ages ago someone suggested having all the MEPs and 'staff' in Brussels carry out a box each with 'their stuff' in, on camera to show they are leaving, then popping around the back and replacing it in their offices and carrying on.

Peregrina · 08/07/2018 21:48

With a new editor, who was in the Remain camp, the Mail might just do something like that.

....Musing, where did RayneDance get to? Was being asked a question too difficult?

surferjet · 08/07/2018 21:49

I was never bothered about the financial side of things tbh, if we need to agree to certain rules to make business run smoothly then fine.
I voted leave to end freedom of movement & that’s been achieved.

Peregrina · 08/07/2018 21:51

I don't actually think Freedom of Movement being ended has been achieved - I think it's been dressed up under a different name, and tightened up. This was a tightening up that we could have done before. We can blame Blair for that one - might as well share the blame around.

surferjet · 08/07/2018 21:54

We can blame Blair for a lot of things, Brexit being one of them.

54321go · 08/07/2018 22:01

@ Surfer.
How come you blame Blair who is Labour for a plan by the Conservatives to sort out a rift in their party? Certainly blame Blair for other stuff mind you!

Peregrina · 08/07/2018 22:03

Blame Blair for Brexit? You should be praising him, if you want Brexit to happen and you think he helped cause it.

CardinalSin · 08/07/2018 23:57

It's very Quitling! Brexit is xyz's fault!

Thereby acknowledging that Brexit is something wrong!

Peregrina · 09/07/2018 01:24

I wonder if surferjet is happy with the resignations that have just happened?

Peregrina · 09/07/2018 01:26

Pressed Enter too soon i.e. still happy with the way things are going. Will Theresa May still be PM when we wake up in the morning?

MrHoolieswaistcoat · 09/07/2018 02:42

surferjet Not being bothered about the ‘financial side of things’ is a luxury that many people don’t have.
For complicated reasons, which have nothing to do with Brexit btw, I have gone from earning a decent salary to earning nothing since the beginning of April. I have gone from not having to worry about money to literally having sleepless nights worrying about how we’re going to pay the gas bill.
But who needs money as long as you can stop foreign people coming here?
I’m in London and have used the NHS massively over the last 9 months - in fact I spent last night in hospital- and ,at a rough estimate, I would say that less than a quarter of staff that I have dealt with from doctors, nurses, HCAs, radiographers, porters etc etc have been white British.
Certainly in London, the NHS would literally collapse without those pesky immigrants.

MrHoolieswaistcoat · 09/07/2018 02:49

Cardinal I couldn’t agree more. How can something which you have wholeheartedly advocated for be someone’s ‘fault?’
Talk about tying yourself in knots.
