Ever closer to Brexit! 🥂 🍻 🍾

Remainers are welcome, as ever.

But!

If you just want to abuse Brexiteers, then start your own thread.

This is a pub thread, not an interrogate-a-Brexiteer thread

We have more in common etc, even if Brexit divides us.

WineBrewCakeThanks

jasjas - I have never 'blamed' the EU for anything I have simply stated I don't agree with FOM and think that the immigration policy we should adopt should be the same for everyone no matter where they come from. The only caveat to that is the ROI where we have reciprocal arrangements.

CardinalSin · 01/05/2018 14:14

Ah, because FOM isn't reciprocal then...

DGRossetti · 01/05/2018 14:31

To quote GBS, but now, you're just arguing over the price ....

jasjas1973 · 01/05/2018 15:19

Double.
ha ha ROI ? so its ok to have a FOM policy with them but no one else?

You ll still have 2 immigration policies and solve absolutely nothing.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 01/05/2018 15:22

we have not organised ourselves for the huge wave of immigration we had - we did not do things fairly for anyone, we the UK cannot work within eu perimeters.

Certain sectors would face collapse without EU workers - see farming, tourism, health care. Unemployment is low. So the foreigners taking jobs from Brits line is bollocks. I get a sense of deja vu with this stuff.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 01/05/2018 15:24

Have Brexiteers now realised that Ireland will not leave the EU and that the border will have to stay as it is?

mummmy2017 · 01/05/2018 15:29

No I don't think that at all... still all at stake.

DGRossetti · 01/05/2018 15:43

Have Brexiteers now realised that Ireland will not leave the EU and that the border will have to stay as it is?

Maybe the ones who realised it's 2018, not 1968 have ?

JWIM · 01/05/2018 15:44

Mummy are you saying you think that the Republic of Ireland will be leaving the EU? That is not happening.

mummmy2017 · 01/05/2018 18:01

Just because they voted does not mean they are stupid...
If it's such a bad deal even an idiot couldn't accept it.... then it won't be accepted.....

It can work as a brake as well....

frumpety · 01/05/2018 20:06

Which is what the HOL has just voted for , Parliament would be given the ability to vote in this situation . How is that a bad thing ?

jasjas1973 · 01/05/2018 20:38

The commons has to vote on this amendment, HOL dont make decisions, its not a given, the tories dont want another GE.

I believe the brexitiers will do anything at all to ensure the UK leaves the EU, regardless of the deal being good, bad or nothing at all.

frumpety · 02/05/2018 06:24

Sorry Jas , my statement was a bit vague , but was cooking dinner and integrating DS on the disappearance of his PE kit , when I wrote it Wink

So who are people on here voting for tomorrow ?

Hasenstein · 02/05/2018 11:17

I'll be voting Lib Dem. So will DW (local elections are the only ones she's allowed to vote in). Politics for me has come down to solely a question of Brexit. Like the government, I have no brain space for anything else!

gussyfinknottle · 02/05/2018 11:47

I am contemplating spoiling my paper. I live in a Labour safe seat and I hate Corbyn. Including (but not limited to Grin) his dreadful performance over Brexit. I supported Remain. Politically homeless at the moment.

DGRossetti · 02/05/2018 12:33

same for myself & DW. Local tories are really on the stump ... we've just had our 3rd leaflet in 3 days. Never known that in 15 years of living here.

Annoyingly I can't claim to be not-voting Tory because of Brexit though. Being as politically engaged as you can, I often raise issues with my councillors, and they handled the last one appallingly ...

twofingerstoEverything · 02/05/2018 13:49

We have an excellent LibDem councillor - very active and visible - so I'll be happy giving him my vote. I have written to Labour explaining why I won't be voting for them. Tory and UKIP candidates deserve no explanation Grin and, locally, they're a bunch of lazy, argumentative fuckers.

DGRossetti · 02/05/2018 14:35

I have written to Labour explaining why I won't be voting for them.

So have I. They started campaigning in (checks) February. I had an email discussion putting my viewpoint. Back then they could get away with "wait and see what the official Labour position is."

Well, now we know, which is why I followed up with a "thanks but no thanks."

Interestingly enough, both Labour candidates are pro-Remain. Maybe they're backing the wrong horse.

Doubletrouble99 · 02/05/2018 14:35

jasjas - We have had a Common Travel Area with the republic of Ireland since the 1920s, it has nothing at all to do with FOM and the EU.

jasjas1973 · 02/05/2018 14:54

Double
I m aware of that, however, you said you didnt want FOM as it favours "white Christians" what do you think the CTA does? ROI is a totally separate/independent country, remaining in the EU & predominately white and christian.
So, by your own reasoning, as we leave the EU, CTA should be got rid of and ROI citizens treated in exactly the same way as anyone else will be in our new immigration policy, whenever that is agreed lol!

Doubletrouble99 · 02/05/2018 15:45

There are particular political and traditional reasons we keep the CTA.
We were asked to vote whether or not we wanted to stay in the EU and I voted leave and one of my reasons was that I did not agree with the FOM legislation which is tied to being in the EU trading block and not to do with us having historically been one country.

jasjas1973 · 02/05/2018 16:39

Historically, we owned half of France, Historically, they owned most of England!!!
I just dont get your logic, CTA favours white Christians, which you said was the reason you were against FOM, thats an absolutely reasoned stance to to take (i respect that POV) but it applies equally to ROI, which hasnt been part of the UK for almost a 100 years.

DGRossetti · 02/05/2018 16:51

Historically, we owned half of France, Historically, they owned most of England!!!

Er, historically the monarch "owned" half of France (etc). I don't think the (few) freemen would have had any chance of selling their "share".

(Unless you are related to the current royal family, in which case the royal "we" would be appropriate ...)

Doubletrouble99 · 02/05/2018 17:23

jasjas - CTA was part of the settlement when Ireland was divided in two. We had been one country for a very long time, speak the same language and have many laws and traditions in common. Are you suggesting that if Scotland had gained independence that we should not have a CTA type of deal for the people of Scotland? I think you are just being obtuse for the sake of it.

jasjas1973 · 02/05/2018 18:03

Not at all, you said you objected to FOM because it discriminated against non EU citizens, a fair enough view to take, you also said you wanted the UK to have an immigration policy where everyone was treated exactly the same.

But you cannot have your cake an eat it (so to speak) we split from Ireland almost 100 years ago, we also share culture and language in common with NZ/Australia/USA etc we do not have any CTA with these countries, indeed we ve even the same head of state!

Scotland didn't gain Independence, so that is a pointless argument BUT if it did, we should not, it would become a separate country, sovereign and independent.

I am merely pointing out your view is inconsistent.
