TBH frumpety it’s feeling like a hostile environment for some of those of us born here too.

frumpety nothing directed at me (my family tree goes back at least to 18th century Yorkshire), what I mean is that every time it seems like the UK is being steered on a more moderate / less damaging course, the ultra Brexiteers and right wing press pop up and stir the pot. We now live in a Leave area and people seem to think it’s fine to say things like “send them all back” quite blatantly. I find it both depressing and deeply uncomfortable.

frumpety where is the evidence that Ministers actually say they are going to climb down? Everyone knew that the Lords are mainly remain so are going to want to put a spanner in the works but nothing they do is binding so I can't see where it is going to make any difference.

Cardinalsin - Nasty bullying EU!!! The article doesn't say anything of the sort. It looks to me as if they are trying to make a story out of a non story in that they are in the midst of negotiating this part of the deal.

The Lords are not mainly remain, but they are less encumbered by party loyalty and the need to be seen to be toeing the line, which is why they act as a brake to some of the less robust ideas chucked their way from the HOC. This isn't about stopping Brexit or thwarting the will of some of the people, it is about working out what will cause the least harm to the UK going forwards.

Ministers will have to back down yet again, as they have been routinely doing since the outcome of the referendum vote became known, because they know remaining in the CU is really the only current viable option.

Well if you'd watched the politics program on BBC2 this lunch time you would realise this is not entirely true and that they are still going through negotiations which are far from finished. The UK ain't going to fold quite so quickly.

All that's happening is Leavers are being primed to blame the nasty EU for not letting us have everything we want.
