Yet it is a great mistake to suppose that the only writers who matter are those whom the educated in their saner moments can take seriously. There exists a subterranean world where pathological fantasies disguised as ideas are churned out by crooks and half-educated fanatics for the benefit of the ignorant and the superstitious. There are times when this underworld emerges from the depths and suddenly fascinates, capturers and dominates multitudes of usually sane and responsible people, who thereupon take leave of sanity and responsibility. And it occasionally happens that this underworld becomes a political power and changes the course of history.
Norm Cohn ‘Warrant for Genocide’ 1970

(As referenced by Nick Cohen).

We have a deal (or bits of a deal). Bino til Dec 2020. Then the cliff?

Still a long way to go. It sounds better than it could be. But worse than it initially seems.

Today is the anniversary of the launch of the SDP...
Time for disaffected Tory and labour MP's to do similar!!

RedToothBrush · 26/03/2018 16:59

Adam Wagner @AdamWagner1
1/ I consider myself to be on the Left. I have almost always voted Labour. I am Jewish. Here's my thoughts on 3 things Jeremy Corbyn needs to do to start to fix this situation with the Jewish community (but I'm afraid it's going to hurt)
2/ First, a mea culpa. Something like: "I often call myself as a life-long anti-racist. This hurts to say but I now accept this view of myself may be wrong. I have a problem. I failed to recognise anti-Semitism on my own doorstep, on my Facebook wall, amongst my colleagues..."
3/ "... I have opened my ears to the victims of anti-Semitism. I realise that if I want to lead the UK, I must try to really understand their concerns, and also reflect on my own actions. To that end.."
4/ Second, announce a listening exercise. Where Jeremy will travel the country and listen to Jewish community groups: synagogues, schools, (yes) Israelis... everyone. Seek at @Limmud. Because of the current relationship, he will engage a conflict resolution expert to manage this.
5/ Third, Jeremy will (for the first time!) hold interviews with two main Jewish newspapers (@JewishNewsUK and @JewishChron). He will launch a regular-ish column in both newspapers where he will answer questions from the community. Essential to open these lines of communication
6/ You may think me naive, or things are too far gone. But I believe - fundamentally - that no problem is beyond solving, particularly where both sides contain good people who want things to be better not worse. But it will be difficult - the above is as minimum to succeed. /end

My MP got an email from me last week stating my concern that Boris and Gove must have known what was going re the illegal use of data, CA and so on. She likes to forward them on for a response so perhaps she will forward to each of them the criminals.

Sam Coates Times @SamCoatesTimes
After a preliminary look at leaked docs just released, I agree with Bindmans own assessment that effect is “cumulative” & “no one piece” of evidence but it’s the “drip drip of similar” claims.

Ie there’s no smoking gun. Whether cumulative effect enough for legal case not clear

www.theregister.co.uk/2018/03/26/uk_struck_off_galileo_project/

From the department of "You only just realised this?" come reports that the UK government has been somewhat taken aback that the EU plans to exclude Britain from the Galileo satellite programme due to Brexit.

Galileo is a European satellite constellation which, when complete in 2020, will be an alternative to the US Global Positioning System (GPS) network.

The costs, of which the UK has paid a portion, are expected to top €2.9bn (PDF) by the time the system is complete.

The initial impact will be felt by the UK's aerospace industry, which will be unable to bid on future contracts worth hundreds of millions over the coming years.

It was clear in evidence given to the UK's own EU Internal Market Sub-Committee earlier this month by industry leaders that work would be leaving UK shores as business stares down the barrel of Brexit.

The EU had already kicked off plans to move the back-up monitoring site from the UK to Spain citing, among others, security concerns.

"Security concerns" may also preclude the British military using the navigation system for which the UK has contributed towards.

With reports coming in that Number 10 is at once "outraged" and "deeply disappointed" at the wholly unsurprising move, The Register was given a statement by the office of business secretary Greg Clark:

The UK has a world-leading space sector that has contributed a significant amount of specialist expertise to the Galileo programme. The government has been clear that we want our critical role in this important project, which will help strengthen European security, to continue as we develop our deep and special partnership with the EU.

This could only happen with complete UK involvement in all aspects of Galileo, including the key secure elements which the UK has unique specialisms in and have helped to design and implement.

Users attempting to learn more about the Galileo programme from the UK government's own website will be disappointed to learn that clicking the link at the base of the page will direct to a terse European Commission statement: "The information you are looking for has moved."

Hopefully not a sign of things to come for the UK space industry.

I doubt that Johnson and Gove will have been involved in the running of the campaign at that level of detail. And even if they were, they would undoubtably have been outside the 'chain of command' in practical terms if there was dodgy goings on, precisely because of the the dodgy goings on. There would be far to many others to pin the blame on before it ever got to them.

Laura Kuenssberg @bbclaurak
Rival protest has started on Parliament sq before Board of Deputies demo - this may prove to all get pretty unpleasant rather than peaceful protest

There is a counter protest to the anti-Semitic protest.

outside the 'chain of command' in practical terms if there was dodgy goings on

But surely they would know how much funding there was, the limit and be told of the £1m donation?

woman11017 · 26/03/2018 17:23

There is a counter protest to the anti-Semitic protest.
The virulent anti semitism and anti women's rights bullying and silencing comes primarily from one faction in labour. That faction needs to be called out, like the same in the tories. But they won't be.
This chaos in gov and opposition simply enables the 'extreme brexit' agenda.

Thing is though, have you read Craig Oliver’s book? He’s constantly having conference calls and meetings to coordinate campaign activity. Not sure this was unique to Leave.

Peter Geoghegan @PeterKGeoghegan
Completely agree. But the transfer of cash from Vote Leave to BeLeave does make this case different IMO

Matthew Thompson @mattuthompson
Ha. Yes i was literally just thinking that after I’d sent the tweet. So far no evidence of Craig handing over brown envelopes! (So far...!)

You mean that Theresa May lied in Parliament Red? No one called her out on it?

RedToothBrush · 26/03/2018 18:07

I mean exactly that.

Theresa has also just started a debate in the HoC on Russia. Call me a cynic but the timetabling is almost as if its deliberate so that Corbyn can't attend the protest at parliament square or the PLP meeting...

Around 10 Tory MPs turned up together to the demo against antisemitism in Labour. I’ve spotted a handful of Labour MPs milling around solo - many lamenting that it has come to this.

Owen Jones @OwenJones84
This is an excellent letter, because it isn't platitudes: it understands what anti-Semitism is. (The smears/innuendos about Corbyn personally and anti-Semitism were always false). But now everyone on the left needs to act on it and smash anti-Semitism wherever it manifests itself

And 48 minutes ago:

The SKWAWKBOX @skwawkbox
Think this is another tweet you'd better delete quickly, Owen. Pronouncing on 'good Jews' and 'bad Jews' ffs? Not to mention that it's a completely baseless statement.

No idea what the original tweet was that has been deleted, but yeah... Mr1984 strikes again.

After the march on Saturday, on Facebook DH posted a photo of us there surrounded by a sea of blue and yellow and EU flags, the DC waving mini EU flags.

This afternoon FiL (who voted Leave, spent months afterwards ranting about EU punishment etc etc) not just Liked but Loved the photo Confused. Maybe he meant to hit the Angry emoji? Or is he a #RemainerNow?!
