Yet it is a great mistake to suppose that the only writers who matter are those whom the educated in their saner moments can take seriously. There exists a subterranean world where pathological fantasies disguised as ideas are churned out by crooks and half-educated fanatics for the benefit of the ignorant and the superstitious. There are times when this underworld emerges from the depths and suddenly fascinates, capturers and dominates multitudes of usually sane and responsible people, who thereupon take leave of sanity and responsibility. And it occasionally happens that this underworld becomes a political power and changes the course of history.
Norm Cohn ‘Warrant for Genocide’ 1970

(As referenced by Nick Cohen).

We have a deal (or bits of a deal). Bino til Dec 2020. Then the cliff?

Still a long way to go. It sounds better than it could be. But worse than it initially seems.

And this would be why FB is suddenly distancing itself two years after they knew about it and tolerated it.

Shit. Meet. Fan.

This is going to force some very difficult questions from MPs. Obvious misleading the HoP.

But they have form for brazenly lying their way out of it. It's about time all the Remain voting MPs got together and stuck to their guns, and called them to account. If it brings down May and the Tories, so be it.

GreenSeededGrape · 19/03/2018 19:36

I need to sign back in. I'd stepped away from these threads as it was just too depressing.

RedToothBrush · 19/03/2018 19:40

Peregina, this looks like its gone past that and into realms of clear criminality.

The concerning thing is that the ICO can't get into CA until they get the warrant to do so. Meanwhile FB are already in there 'investigating'.

The opportunity to cover up this shit is right there happening now, whilst there are tv cameras outside filming the building.

Also all the stuff in the US seeming to suddenly hit the fan, with this coming out stinks to high heaven.

Carole Cadwalladr @carolecadwalla
Wow. Britain's Information Officer announces she is seeking a warranting to raid Cambridge Analytica and seize servers(On the plus side, I'm smugly smiling at all the Westministenders who didn't think this was crazy shit when it first started being talked about in Feb last year. Remarkable its now hitting the headlines at this moment in time).
To be clear: this is @chrisinsilico's work. He gave a dossier of evidence to ICO last month and has been fully co-operating with the authorities...
Facebook has been "co-operative" with ICO says Elizabeth Denham. Cambridge Analytica on the other hand has required them to seek to use their statutory powers to compel evidence....

From a little story that sounded like a conspiracy theory in Feb last year to this...

Look how far we've come.

On our side, a gov monitor, waiting patiently for FB to answer questions. She has a staff of 10 against FB, CA and lord knows who else, and is waiting for a warrant now.
It's like the characters from Trumpton, going after the mafia.

A staff of 10 ... and legal powers being sought now.

Well done to those who diligently and persistently researched and pushed and researched.

But we - the electorate, the public - have been pretty let down.

AgnesSkinner · 19/03/2018 19:58

Just to add a little more joy, Leave.EU turning on each other:

Arron Banks @Arron_banks
Cambridge Analytica said in a meeting they had a back door into Facebook. When they demanded £1m up front & to raise £6m for us we smelled a rat @andywigmore

Andy Wigmore @andywiore
You implying I’m a Rat? @Arronbanks - anyway it was the ‘professional’ @voteleave that ended up using them not us, @LeaveEUOfficial any comment @matthew_elliott @DanielJHannan and Cummings (wherever you are)

Joe Lynam BBC @BBCJoeLynam
The powers (or lack of) of the @ICOnews is coming into sharp focus #CambridgeAnalyticaUncovered. They can’t for example raid a company directly.

John Simpson @JohnSimpsonNews
Congratulations to @Channel4News for your excellent investigation, #CambridgeAnalyticaUncovered. It's a game-changer. There'll be important repercussions in countries around the world where CA has operated -- not least the US.

Still can't believe we were talking about this shit so long ago.

Wait, Cambridge Analytica, are you suggesting that real estate transactions can be used as a vehicle for laundering illegal campaign contributions? No way.

Slowly watching news of the story filter to the us on twitter.

Worst bit, I really don't think it will change anything. The damage is done.

I hope im wrong this time.
