Yet it is a great mistake to suppose that the only writers who matter are those whom the educated in their saner moments can take seriously. There exists a subterranean world where pathological fantasies disguised as ideas are churned out by crooks and half-educated fanatics for the benefit of the ignorant and the superstitious. There are times when this underworld emerges from the depths and suddenly fascinates, capturers and dominates multitudes of usually sane and responsible people, who thereupon take leave of sanity and responsibility. And it occasionally happens that this underworld becomes a political power and changes the course of history.
Norm Cohn ‘Warrant for Genocide’ 1970

(As referenced by Nick Cohen).

We have a deal (or bits of a deal). Bino til Dec 2020. Then the cliff?

Still a long way to go. It sounds better than it could be. But worse than it initially seems.

World renowned is good enough bigchoc.

TheElementsSong · 25/03/2018 21:09

We are leaving Galileo. Cos its a EU programme. What do you mean Mrs May? You don't want to leave that?

There are essentially two Brexiteer modes at play in situations like this:

(1) Stuff we're leaving/will be leaving UK that Leavers haven't decided they want even if it's just because they've never heard of it - "Of course I knew I was voting to lose this, we did fine 45 years ago without this, clean break, Out means Out, Let's Get On With It, etc."

(2) Stuff we're leaving/will be leaving UK that Leavers have decided they want - "The bullying EU are vindictively punishing us, how could I have known that losing this thing was implicit in leaving the EU, see how badly they're treating us by not changing the rules and letting us have these things that we want!"

It's quite amazing the number of things that have moved from (1) to (2) since the ref Grin.

Paul Brand @ paulbranditv
BREAKING: @JohnMannMP tells me Corbyn statement is 'too little, too late', that 'there are anti-semites crawling in and out of the Labour Party at random' and Corbyn must take action. There'll be a protest tomorrow in Westminster and statement delivered to leader himself.

Some speculation that a statement organised by Board of Jewish Deputies may have been the final straw which led Corbyn to issue far stronger statement.

NEW: @wesstreeting tells me the party 'isn't looking for words but actions' and it 'speaks volumes that Jeremy Corbyn still hasn't said sorry for his own actions', just sorry for 'the pain' others have caused.

Several MPs will join tomorrow's demo before taking a statement into a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party, which they have asked Jeremy Corbyn attends.

Note: John Mann is not a Remain Centrist. John Mann is one of the half dozen Lexiters. He even defied the party whip to vote for the Withdrawal Bill.

Well perhaps the orchestras should do what the brass bands do fund raise!

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2018 21:11

Think of the difference in UK National Athletics championships and the European Athletics Championships

  • ntbo, if the British athletes were the best in all fields, they'd win all the medals instead of just some of them they'd set all the European records, instead of just some of them

As pp have reminded us, Youth musicians have a short window to make their mark
and it's really strange to be so cavalier about these 15 kids either having their career opportunities limited, or having to move abroad now - if their parents can manage it.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2018 21:14

and if you list all the UK athletics meetings, it'd fill pages !
Doesn't mean they're the same standard and offering the same opportunities as European events

Sostenueto · 25/03/2018 21:14

Pretzel they are youth orchestras age range 12-18 children's 8-12 there will always be a high turnover and places in them if. You. Are. The. Best. That. Year. My last word on the matter.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2018 21:17

Some Brexiters would say NHS could charge or do more fund-raising too, to make up their funding
Yes, but it would have an effect and make life more difficult

Sostenueto · 25/03/2018 21:17

Well bigchoc anything European must be the best ( my goodness Europeans are falling over themselves to copy the British Brassbands) of courseHmm

Sostenueto · 25/03/2018 21:18

Life is but a challenge bigchoc. Makes you feel alive does a good old challenge.

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 25/03/2018 21:20

Sod the youth. They're not patriotic enough. Wanting to improve themselves? Bloody snowflakes. Who do they think they are? They should be happy with their unicorn horns to play with in the sunlit uplands. Tut tut.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2018 21:20

sos Any difficulty or change can theoretically be overcome
e.g. The country wouldn't drop dead without an NHS
but it would make life more difficult for those who aren't rich

So why would we shrug about people, kids, losing out ?

Icantreachthepretzels · 25/03/2018 21:20

FFS Sos nobody is saying that these orchestras do not exist or that they do not tour. You are not proving anything - other than that you do not understand the issue - by posting their concert dates. Not least because brexit has not happened yet and we have not yet lost the EU orchestra!
The fact that there are some dates around the country does not prove that these orchestras are still touring as much round Britain as they used to (you would need to be comparing the complete number of appearances over several years to prove that) nor does it prove that they will not fall into difficulties if brexit happens.

Give it up. I'm really beginning to doubt your sincerity as a poster.

woman11017 · 25/03/2018 21:22

there are anti-semites crawling in and out of the Labour Party at random' and Corbyn must take action
Wow.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2018 21:23

Would everyone on WTC, HB, CB etc drop dead if all benefits are withdrawn ?
No
Should they relish the challenge ?
`

Icantreachthepretzels · 25/03/2018 21:27

Pretzel they are youth orchestras age range 12-18 children's 8-12 there will always be a high turnover and places in them if. You. Are. The. Best. That. Year. My last word on the matter

But there are now 15 less places. So 15 children who used to be considered the best are now nothing and no where. Maybe not the same 15 who lost the EU places - maybe those who would have had the national places if the EU children had kept theirs. But fuck them right? Life is a challenge.
The fact that this is an opportunity our children used to have that has been stolen from them by bigots and racists who wanted to hark back to the glory days of the empire - without giving a rats arse about all this lost opportunity and wasted potential - whatever - life is a challenge.

Sostenueto · 25/03/2018 21:27

Take listen to why the Europeans, nay the world loves our modern day brass bands.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2018 21:28

woman Do you think Labour MPs will force the party to take this seriously at last ?
JC keeps makes meaningless promises, or having meaningless enquiries that are a whitewash.
He obviously doesn't give a damn on this topic - he's no good at pretending

I hope the very blunt statements by the British Board of Deputies force MPs and the remaining non-hard left bits of the party machine to take effective action

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2018 21:36

sos Would you be so happily posting videos of other uni students reading geography, if you knew your DD / GD would be competing for fewer uni places ?

After all, the best students will get their chance, won't they ?
So why not cut the geography places, or make the unis raise funds themselves, maybe sell raffle rickets

Sostenueto · 25/03/2018 21:38

Oh I understand the issue alright. Bet you aren't upset about all those glorious mining brass bands that went down the swanney under Thatcher including all of the under 18s that played in them with a vast amount of musical ability? A bit more than 15 players I believe. P.s brass bands have amateur status even Cory band. Not bad for a load of amateurs eh!

Sostenueto · 25/03/2018 21:40

Bigchoc life is one big competition in everything. I just concentrate on the challenges arising from just keeping alive.

Sostenueto · 25/03/2018 21:42

P.s dgd not doing geography now if she gets to uni, she's going to do neuroscience.

RedToothBrush · 25/03/2018 21:45

Yes if life is one great competition and nothing else, the hard right libertarians of the Tory party have it spot on. No welfare state. No NHS. No state schools. No school dinners. No human rights at all. People would learn to survive or they would die. But that's fine because thats what competition is.

This has been festering with encouragement from the usual suspects for a years. Will JC and his merry men take notice? On current form (Women's Rights and Safety, Majority of Labour is Remain) : no.

Sostenueto · 25/03/2018 21:49

Haven't you heard disabled peoples human rights have been renegaded on by this government only this week, article in the canary apparently?. I haven't read it all its too depressing, something about a court overthrowing them.
