This may be the last Brexit Arms thread that I will host.

It was intended to be a non-partisan and relatively light hearted thread for posters on both sides of the divide, but unfortunately this seems to have proved impossible so far.

It is not supposed to be a place for the disgruntled Remainer to use as an outlet to abuse and kick out at their perceived enemy.

I will give it one last go in the hope that things will change.

So.... onwards to Brexit....

Misti,
I believe a EFTA deal is where we are heading, was sold by a lot of softer leavers in run up to referendum, wife likes Norway/Iceland approach, neither totally sold on EU project, but see benefits to associate membership.
Voted remain, as son thought it best and he heavily campaigned for it.
He also sees "EFTA deal" as best way out.
I honestly believe apart from the most committed on both sides, a compromise would be acceptable to the general public of UK
So we leave, but keep some benefits.
IMHO it is the only way out of this sorry debacle, which should have been handle so much better. If we fail, I hold only two parties to blame D Cameron for the referendum and no proper planning for exiting, the twat, and all of parliament ever since for playing party politics with the future of everyone hear, including all our kids
It is a complete balls up since 26th June 2016, it could and should have been better. Angry
Certainly not leavers, who after all answered a legally put question by their government

bearbehind · 02/03/2018 12:59

I know what you mean michael. I guess it's just because most of us would be embarrassed to admit all those things, let alone be proud of them.

It's a similar situation with faith and her complete refusal to defend any of her points.

We all know it's because they are actually indefensible but she takes a perverse joy in keeping on saying 'google it' or 'read it' despite knowing the answers don't exist- most peculiar and shameless behaviour

I suppose it's all part of the odd brain washing that's going on. You can't question anything if you're happy with the waffle coming from the government right now.

DGRossetti · 02/03/2018 13:02

Certainly not leavers, who after all answered a legally put question by their government

Interesting that the word "legally" crept in there Hmm

I wonder if any country in the world has a constitution which requires referenda be possible before going ahead ?

(pauses so Brexiteers can completely misunderstand for effect).

I'm not suggesting that it's impossible to leave the EU (I never have). But I am suggesting that such a braindead question as appeared on the referendum ballot should have been thrown out as being too vague and therefore not possible to implement HmmHmmHmmHmmHmm

user1471450935 · 02/03/2018 13:16

DG
I know it was advisory, but who sold it like that?
Also if we had voted remain and leavers lost 55-45, like in Scotland, would you be happy for them to keep saying advisory. Genuine question.
None of us asked for that exact wording, apart from D Cameron's government and wasn't it passed by election commission too.
We can only answer the question asked.
The country did.
Unfortunately ever since we have been shown what a useless bunch of elected MP's we have.
We are meant to the mother of all parliaments, god I hate to see the terrible two's of the parliament family Smile and [embarrassed] for MP's

TalkinPeace · 02/03/2018 13:21

User
Pleased to see that you - unlike surfer have stopped being flippant.

The good thing about an EFTA arrangement is that there is a chance that much of the UK economy would survive.
The bad thing is that we would have no control over the rules and no access to things like EU development funds.

The UK is currently part of the world's largest Free Trade agreement
currently has the world's best trade negotiators on tap (in Brussels)
has through them good trade agreements with the bulk of the world's economies
and we are about to walk away from the flipping lot.

Cupofteaandtoilet · 02/03/2018 13:31

user, I don't want least damage possible - I want no damage at all. This is why, as bear said, a lot of us are asking, "what's the fucking point?". Leavers (presumably) voted for a better UK. This has now turned into a damage limitation exercise and seems completely pointless. Worse than pointless, it's wasting time, money, energy and trashing our international reputation.

(sorry, I'm a bit behind)

MichaelBendfaster · 02/03/2018 13:41

if we had voted remain and leavers lost 55-45, like in Scotland, would you be happy for them to keep saying advisory.

Obviously, leavers who had 'lost' could say what they liked, just as remainers who've 'lost' can. It'll be a dark day when that is no longer true. (Of course, sections of the gutter press and our own 'leaders' are already doing their damndest to hasten that day, with the 'talking the country down'/'traitors'/'enemies of the people' rhetoric.)

It's not a meaningful comparison, though, because in the event of a remain result, nothing would have changed.

Kofa · 02/03/2018 13:42

Kofa, I gave an answer re SM/CU in a previous post.

Faith Your previous post crossed with mine but even then didn't directly answer my question which was specifically with regard to the border and the CU/SM. Or are you saying that regardless of the impact on Ireland you would still not accept staying in the CU/SM?

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 02/03/2018 13:48

Or are you saying that regardless of the impact on Ireland you would still not accept staying in the CU/SM?

Again, I refer you to my PPs.

I did not at any point say that I would 'not accept staying in the CU/SM'.

bearbehind · 02/03/2018 14:07

This speech is hilarious; 'associate membership'

I.e. BINO Grin

bearbehind · 02/03/2018 14:28

I'm baffled by that speech. Is TM trying to get herself sacked?

On one hand she's saying we need to maintain alignment and stay in association membership with agencies.

On the other hand she said we will lose passporting.

It's absolute madness.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 02/03/2018 14:33

Brexiteers will love the speech. All the classic bullshit was there, sovereignty, controlling borders. Everything else she said bordered on fantasy.

bearbehind · 02/03/2018 14:39

The language is changing again.

Trade is now not 'frictionless' it's 'as frictionless as possible'

So some kind of border then?

DGRossetti · 02/03/2018 14:44

Given this is the speech all the Brexiteers told us would solve everything, I'd be interested on their input ?

(I know faith already said they may not be able to catch the speech live).

AgnesSkinner · 02/03/2018 14:47

She’s pretty much asking for EEA/EFTA in all but name. Plus she’s fucked up on saying that Norway has to accept all EU law - it doesn’t.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 02/03/2018 14:51

I've just watched it.

I'm happy with it - she's set out what we want, as requested, now it's up to the negotiators.

InfiniteSheldon · 02/03/2018 14:54

An honest speech setting out what she wants and acknowledging the issues. Interesting the amount we underwrite. It's in no one's interests for this to go badly (except Bear who is desperate to say I told you so Grin ) both sides want and need a resolution that allows us to carry on trading as frictionless as possible.

DGRossetti · 02/03/2018 14:56

An honest speech setting out what she wants and acknowledging the issues.

Perhaps a better time for that would have been March last year ?

bearbehind · 02/03/2018 14:59

The language is changing on here too; Leavers said there were no issues before.

That speech is lining up the softest Brexit possible.

She even refused to keep the option of walking away on the table when specifically asked that in the Q&A. She had a chance to say we wepould walk away but she didn't, she said we'd reach a deal.

mummmy must be beside hereslf! Grin

InfiniteSheldon · 02/03/2018 15:14

Bear Leavers aren't a homogeneous mass we all differ and have acknowledged issues time and time again we just different because you cling to issues, any issues as a reason to Remain your fear and anxiety colours your posting us a very upsetting way. Get counseling.

user1471450935 · 02/03/2018 15:15

Can I admit to be confused.
Like Agnes I think we want EFTA but she daren't use those words.
We will keep aligned to Eu rules/listen to ECJ rulings and implement if necassary.
Stay in certain Eu clubs and our regulators will continue to work in cooperation with ours.
isn't that staying in the SM/CU in name but leaving for the sake it
Sorry I feel abit let down, sounds like we will stay in EFTA or try forming old EEC to sit next to EU.
What happened to break free and lead the new free trading world.
At least aim for these, with my EFTA as the fall back solution.
sounds like we are aiming for EFTA at best
Damp squid if you ask me. Sorry

TalkinPeace · 02/03/2018 15:15

An honest speech setting out what she wants and acknowledging the issues.
but it is all such intangible fairy dust platitudes that its utterly meaningless
and contradictory

TalkinPeace · 02/03/2018 15:17

User147
Damp squid if you ask me. Sorry
Yup, it will piss off both sides
Now that you are listening for the tangibles in her words you are seeing our frustration Grin

bearbehind · 02/03/2018 15:17

infinite, why do you and others always revert to insult in order to avoid discussion.

I don't need counselling thank you.

bearbehind · 02/03/2018 15:19

isn't that staying in the SM/CU in name but leaving for the sake it

Exactly user. I too am impressed that you are the only Leaver on here who is now listening to what is actually being said rather than what they want to hear.
