This may be the last Brexit Arms thread that I will host.

It was intended to be a non-partisan and relatively light hearted thread for posters on both sides of the divide, but unfortunately this seems to have proved impossible so far.

It is not supposed to be a place for the disgruntled Remainer to use as an outlet to abuse and kick out at their perceived enemy.

I will give it one last go in the hope that things will change.

So.... onwards to Brexit....

Commenting on Toyota’s position, Van Zyl said: “As a company, we are doing what we can to secure the competitiveness of our UK operations as a leading manufacturing centre for our European business.
“With around 85% of our UK vehicle production exported to European markets, continued free and frictionless trade between the UK and Europe will be vital for future success.”

frumpety · 01/03/2018 06:53

My above posts give an indication of what the UK motor manufacturers want and need to continue in the UK . A key part of the first post is

maintaining our current open trade links not just with Europe but with key international markets.

frumpety · 01/03/2018 06:56

Manufacturing industry in the UK says we need to continue free and frictionless trade between the EU and UK . Are they and their 800,000 plus employees betraying our sovereignty and traitorous to boot for suggesting this ? Discuss Grin

Perhaps thats because the government wants us to stay in after all, just doesn't know how to tell us.

I actually think that's true, and it terrifies Leavers which is why they continually insist 'we're leaving'

There's quite a lot about car manufacturers in the press today; they need frictionless trade or they will have to go elsewhere.

Remember that conversation had with Nissan just after the referendum, the only way of reassuring them was by saying nothing is going to change.

Well the EU aren't going to allow frictionless trade outside SM/CU so there's only one option; u-turn number 43!

I do agree that John Major isn't 'the elite' in that sense.

Talking about not even blinking whilst being so incredulous though - John Major yesterday is just as swervy as the rest of them.

Saying another Ref might be an option (previously said there shouldn't be a second one, and indeed refused to countenance one on Maastricht during his tenure);

Calling for a free vote for MPs, as that's apparently the only decent thing to do (in his government, he whipped his MPs to within and inch of their lives & wouldn't stand for any dissension).

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 01/03/2018 09:23

The hard right has really got used to being able to lie and lie and lie without their supporters even blinking, haven't they?

As have the left.

This is not a left/right phenomenon - they're all as bad as each other.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 01/03/2018 09:24

Didn’t Farage say their should be a second referendum? Isn’t a free vote sovereign parliament taking back control? Wasn’t the GFA signed on the back of 2 referendums and therefore the will of the people?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 01/03/2018 09:26

Saying the left/right are as bad as each other is a cop out. Majority of contradictions have come from right wing brexiteers

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 01/03/2018 09:29

Didn’t Farage say their should be a second referendum?

Your point? I did say they're all as bad as each other.
No side has dibs on integrity.

Isn’t a free vote sovereign parliament taking back control?

Yes, hence my pointing out the outrageous double standards of Major.

Wasn’t the GFA signed on the back of 2 referendums and therefore the will of the people?

Please direct me to where Theresa May has said 'let's rip up the GFA' - all I've seen is her repeatedly saying that it will not be compromised.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 01/03/2018 09:31

Saying the left/right are as bad as each other is a cop out. Majority of contradictions have come from right wing brexiteers

😂

Majority?

KK then.
No contradictions at all from the left, or from remainers?

You are either being deliberately disingenuous or you're suffering delusions.
I suspect the former.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 01/03/2018 09:34

I don’t think brexiteers on this thread are in any position to accuse others of delusions.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 01/03/2018 09:37

Faith, what the Tories have been saying on NI is contradictory to what they have been saying on Brexit ie incompatible

surferjet · 01/03/2018 09:41

Tbf, I think we’re all as bad as each other on here, neither side will budge an inch, & I doubt even in the mainstream population many people have changed their minds, they just don’t obsess about it like we do.

Calm down dear.

CardinalSin · 01/03/2018 10:01

And Faith and her ilk are just bending over and saying "another one please sir".

It's appalling that they feel they can't dare to criticise the politicians on their own side.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 01/03/2018 10:28

I'm more than happy to criticise anyone Cardinal.

HTH

Cailleach1 · 01/03/2018 10:36

For everyone complaining about no free vote over Maastricht. If people were unhappy then, shouldn't they all be delighted Major has seen the light and be clapping their hands now he recommends a free vote for whatever arrangement is being created. You know, the one nobody really knew what it would look like as it wasn't in the Referendum. And hasn't even been properly engaged with yet for a view of the future arrangement.

Single market like non EU Norway or a half hearted customs union like non EU Turkey. So many ways of being a non EU country.

May says no British PM could agree to the thing she agreed to before Christmas.

SativaFarmer · 01/03/2018 10:39

I don't know much about hydroponics

I do. The amount of energy you'd need is colossal (and the land you'd need to appropriate).

There isn't a cat in hells chance we could do it now, let alone in a future where energy is scarcer (unless we ramp up nuclear).

And take it from me - the hydroponics the UK is a world-beater in (really - anyone who has travelled will know the reputation we have) - isn't really the hydroponics any UK government is ever going to talk about.

AgnesSkinner · 01/03/2018 11:02

isn't really the hydroponics any UK government is ever going to talk about.

Ah, but think of the wonderful export opportunities for our “specialist” production Smile

user1471450935 · 01/03/2018 11:03

Thanks for info on hydroponics. It was a long time ago. Just wondered what had happen really.
Interesting thing about brexit is it crosses all political boundaries.
So you get Jacob Rees Mogg voting the same way as seven labour Mps, including Kate Hoey, Frank Fields and Dennis Skinner
Who thought that JRM and Dennis Skinner would ever agree on one thing and both vote it through.
Strange times.
