This may be the last Brexit Arms thread that I will host.

It was intended to be a non-partisan and relatively light hearted thread for posters on both sides of the divide, but unfortunately this seems to have proved impossible so far.

It is not supposed to be a place for the disgruntled Remainer to use as an outlet to abuse and kick out at their perceived enemy.

I will give it one last go in the hope that things will change.

So.... onwards to Brexit....

user, are you going to tell us why you think it's acceptable to expect to have all the benefits of SM/CU without membership?

I.e. Why you questioned if the EU would 'bully' us into staying in the SM/CU when the government have said we'd don't want to, yet we still maintain we can continue to reap the benefits.

bear / mother
Ease back a bit off User
She's got power cuts
and as you may notice has asked a couple of really sensible questions and not rejected the answers out of hand
unlike others on the thread
Confrontation is rarely as effective as information and support.

bearbehind · 28/02/2018 22:37

talkin, she is a he for starters.

And I won't 'ease off'.

It's another excuse.

He can respond to posts about his mothers gas but miraculously not those asking more difficult questions.

Fair enough. I regularly get accused of being a bloke so did not notice.
But actually headbutting gets tiring.
My comments on the USA and China were accepted.
Bit by bit other bits of info will percolate in as well Grin

user1471450935 · 28/02/2018 22:45

Thanks talkin, we will live. I am a dad sorry.
Was thinking today whilst trying paint new kitchen.
Was it Norman Lamont and John Major government who crashed out of ERM.
Or was it in Thatcher' time. I remember living in Essex and interest rates hitting 15%.
Was it Black Wednesday (friday is a sales tool I think)
Get the feeling euroseptics took off after that.
All following governments made major changes and never took whole of population with them. So leading to need to kill of Ukip. We may have but by then getting their deepest wish. Not in Cameron's prefered way

bearbehind · 28/02/2018 22:46

talkin I agree head butting gets tiring but posters who deliberately play dumb irritate me.

user responds when you ask about his power cuts but has ignored multiple posts from various people on matters like

  • why would people in a Hull vote Leave because the EY has destroyed the city if unemployment has gone down over the last 5 years and things are looking up
  • why the EU are perceived to be bullying when they say we can't have the benefits of SM/Cu as a non-member
TalkinPeace · 28/02/2018 22:48

user147
Wikipedia is your friend for most of those - and the editing of political history pages on there is generally pretty reliable

The Eurosceptics are an odd bunch - many of them hate each other almost as much as they hate YERP
and Farridge is just an opportunist
who is rich enough not to care how much damage he does to cities like yours

TalkinPeace · 28/02/2018 22:53

bearbehind
My point is that User147 has had the grace to admit that they do not know.
So we will not get answers
but at least I'm not getting grief from that poster any more Smile

When somebody admits that they do not know, try to inform them, not shout at them for being uninformed.

When somebody spouts rubbish, then they have to be corrected

Here is a montage of Leave campaigners saying to stay IN the single Market

And here's when that montage got ripped apart:

user1471450935 · 28/02/2018 22:57

Talkin, bear, mother
Another question please.
I believe full access to SM/CU is only available to full members of the EU?
Is that correct
Beleive the likes of EEA , EFTA and Swiss and Canada only get to access small parts.
Cost involved and no say in rule changes.
So we say we are leaving
How can we possible keep full SM/CU access we have at present, if not in club.
Surely that is totally cake and eat it
So it completely confuses me, not hard I admit that the EU and many on here want us to stay in. When surely the EU would have to kick us out, or everyone can leave and stay in SM/CU at no cost. So surely British government is right we have to leave them. I admit I am baffled or is the Irish border that warrents this..
Sorry long question and post

bearbehind · 28/02/2018 22:58

Ok talkin you humour him then see how long it takes to get frustrated at the lack of any responses which require thought on the practicalities of Brexit.

It's the same with all Leavers on here.

surfer and faith thought that daily mash article about a bead curtain border was funny; it might have been if it actually wasn't the best option anyone has currently come up with Hmm

bearbehind · 28/02/2018 23:01

user no harder border in NI and not being in SM/CU are not compatible.

They can't BOTH happen.

Doubletrouble99 · 28/02/2018 23:05

How said we should be self sufficient or that we should only eat seasonal products? Not any leaver I know. I simply suggested we have become far too reliant on importing too much produce we could easily grow ourselves. It's not an either or when it comes to farming or tech, you can't turn arable land into high tech units. I don't think you have very much idea just how well off many arable farmers are. We wouldn't need to invest in high tech machinery the farmers do that. By the way Talkin they do grow lettuce and peppers and there are loads of berries grown in Scotland it's famous for it.

user1471450935 · 28/02/2018 23:09

Bear
Sorry but I voted remain, but they lost, we are leaving. I accept that is demoracy
So I left my position behind and researched lots, came to conclusion we have to make it work. So look for positives and slowly learning more.
I know i annoy you. Sorry.
But I am a dad of 48, 2 boys 3 O levels and lots of Cse's. With a NDA. I can't solve brexit, sorry I wish I could, who ever does will be rich.
But by listening and talking to Mn I learn new things and.you now know why Hull voted leave. That won't change, because thats in the past
The future we can influene and change and I honestly think that what we should do. You disagree. Fine but respect that I disagree with others to but I will never be rude.

user1471450935 · 28/02/2018 23:13

Bear no electric means no internet. Being semi rural we have crap mobile data access. Not hiding. Said I will catch up. Mother asked if different news I said what I read/watch in a pp.

user1471450935 · 28/02/2018 23:19

Double
When I went to Wisconisin in 1994, dairy tour of I beleive the dairy state of USA They showed us around a experimental farm that was growing vegetables and herbs, think they looking at fruit next. In what was disused industrial buildings using water and nutrients. Hydrpondics?
Did it ever take of commerically. They thought it answer food shortages. Never heard of it since

user1471450935 · 28/02/2018 23:35

Sorry final post before bed.
Bear not sure how we sort Irish problem. I suggested electronic controls, I said buying in Canada sent to USA all from Holdeness.
You all right told me off, CU on Us/Canada border
I still thinking, may take some time though, but May/Davis and Barnier/Tusk seem to be failing to.
My total fear for border in Irish Sea, i said North Sea earlier sorry, stupid mistake, is this below
The loyalist's and I mean UVF and co, believe Blair sold them out on GFA. Anyone remember Belfast riots because they stopped flying Union Flag. If Uk agree to internal border I fear the loyalist's will see it as the 1st step to a total sell out and a unified Ireland.
That will lead to voilence, and fear end of peace. At the end of troubles I believe the loyalist's where kill more than the IRA/INLA. So the EU's Irish Solution could kill the GFA too, after all the unionist's have to agree to it too

Doubletrouble99 · 28/02/2018 23:40

I don't know much about hydroponics but I have see it on TV where people have been farming in underground tunnels and old factories in UK cities. Think it's a nesh though. I do know someone how has invested in it heavily in Aus. however!

Desperatelyseekingsun · 01/03/2018 00:00

I question where the money for investing in this new machinery will come from.
If it was a profitable thing to do farmers would be doing it, the only thing I can think of that would make it profitable would be a significant increase in food prices. It is possibly a better thing for the environment to eat locally grown produce if any heat sources are obtained in a sustainable way but it will not be cheaper. I am not sure people who cannot wait to Brexit have thought through paying more for their food.

There will be extra money around once we leave, this could be invested in helping to increase industry

Awwwww.
'Bless', as they say.

mathanxiety · 01/03/2018 03:29

The Unionists have never agreed to anything, User. They were running a nice little apartheid state in Northern Ireland from Stormont from the 1920s to the 1970s when direct rule from Westminster was inaugurated. The problems caused by their hegemony in NI were so severe that a Civil Rights campaign was started in the late 60s in imitation of the American Civil Rights movement. The Unionists campaigned doggedly from the late 60s to today against what used to be called 'power-sharing' (aka civil and political rights for the large minority population).

If Ireland were to be reunited, the Loyalist paramilitaries would be someone else's problem. Hanging on to NI come hell or high water seems to be yet another example of Britain's penchant for shooting herself in the foot.

Hydroponics:
www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20150620/ISSUE01/306209984/summertime-tomatoes-in-the-dead-of-winter
Look at:
Size of initial investment
Size of greenhouse
Business background of the entrepreneurs

The bottom line is - can it be done in the UK cheaper than growing tomatoes in Mexico and shipping them?

Because that is what the UK agriculture (and business in general) will be up against when Brexit occurs and there are no arrangements in place except the WTO position.

frumpety · 01/03/2018 06:36

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said,
While it is good to see global appetite for British-built cars reach record levels in January, this only reinforces the industry’s increasing reliance on overseas demand. Future growth will therefore depend on maintaining our current open trade links not just with Europe but with key international markets.
A transitional deal will be an important first step but, in the long term, a seamless relationship between the UK and Europe must be maintained. The EU remains the third largest new car market in the world and, given it is on our doorstep, it is not surprising it accounts for more than half of our global exports.
