This may be the last Brexit Arms thread that I will host.

It was intended to be a non-partisan and relatively light hearted thread for posters on both sides of the divide, but unfortunately this seems to have proved impossible so far.

It is not supposed to be a place for the disgruntled Remainer to use as an outlet to abuse and kick out at their perceived enemy.

I will give it one last go in the hope that things will change.

So.... onwards to Brexit....

Ok gussy,
Warm welcome stills stands from me
It horrible here, beast from the east, hitting Hull.
After the incident in Leicester, thought it would be nice to be friendly, like op asked

DGRossetti · 27/02/2018 16:53

Oh, and US micro breweries will want a crack at our market. And they are getting very, very good at it.

Just to note that it took over half a century for the US brewing industry to finally get back to pre-prohibition health.

(I guess Brexit could be viewed as the UKs equivalent of prohibition ?)

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 16:58

Uncle had lada, best mate a 1979 skoda.
Why does a lada have heated back window?
To keep your hands warm when you push it
Think Skoda could be used.
Our farm had a Yugo van
IT was known as
Yugo but the van doesn't
Also some joke about skip and skoda
sorry jokes from my school days

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 17:01

DG
Not to me,
Us beer is lager
I like bitter, mild, even better a pint of mixed. That's half of one and half of other.
Also cider, lager is an European/ American gas laden sop.

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 17:08

Us beer is lager
Hmmm. You are in for a shock when the US micro brewers come in and take over the UK.

DGRossetti · 27/02/2018 17:10

My preferred tipple is homemade these days - and not much of it due to calories.

But my DB raves about the variety and quality of US beers now, compared to when he emigrated 25 years ago. (He first used the term "craft beer" years ago).

www.craftbeer.com/ is a great example of what the US can do - and do best. They are all baying for the UK market (hence US companies buying UK breweries www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-42595870 ).

Of course we have - or had ? - Diageo ...

With all of that said, these very forums provide a very good indicator of what tends to happen to successful UK firms that are sold to US companies Cadburys.

But, if that's what Brexit brings, bring it on.

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 17:10

Think we lead the world in games technology, not the consoles, that's Japan, but the actually games played on them. Plus mobile phone apps.
That's the problem, I can think of loads of things we could export, but like Fish, or Lada cars they could disappear tomorrow, but something else like apps could be around the corner, and if we are free to choose our own priorities, that could turn us into world beaters.

Hasenstein · 27/02/2018 17:13

Not to me,
Us beer is lager

US (micro)breweries produce some excellent bitters and pale ales.

And in Europe, there's an excellent pale ale brewed by the Becks brewery "Inspired by England", as it says on the label.

DGRossetti · 27/02/2018 17:19

WTF are you on ?

Games technology - OK ^another 0.01% of our economy.

Fish ? Where are we going to export them to ? Even if it was 5-10% of GDP.

Lada cars ? (Which we don't make). Who on earth would buy a Lada these days ?

Apps ? OK, let's be generous and make that 1% GDP.

Still looking for another 94+%.

I supposed there's always Welsh gold ? Mind you those damned immigrant Romans did such a good job of mining it, you'd have to level half of Wales to get it economically.

Shortbread and Tartan ?

All Brexit is doing, is highlighting how badly equipped for the future the UKs education system has performed ....

(And I think I deserve a medal for getting this far without mentioning I call app Britain .... oh, damn Sad)

Hasenstein · 27/02/2018 17:19

"That's the problem, I can think of loads of things we could export, but like Fish, or Lada cars they could disappear tomorrow, but something else like apps could be around the corner, and if we are free to choose our own priorities, that could turn us into world beaters."

That's a lot of potential conditionals in there, but the last one is the most telling.

After the incident in Leicester, thought it would be nice to be friendly, like op asked

I’ve decided to take a step back from posting today as even I can see this is just going round in pointless circles however, the above comments is in incredibly poor taste.

What have the events in Leicester got to do with discussions on here?

lonelyplanetmum · 27/02/2018 17:26

Leicester was tragic but I don't see the connection with the title or theme of the thread.

Contrary to some assertions upthread, however Hull has been connected to this thread, and is very close to my heart .Oddly so is Brid as I have two remaining elderly relatives who live there. I am desperately trying to understand how what I see as a disaster is going to help these places I am very fond of. I desperately hope that this belief comes to fruition.

I think it is agreed before the referendum, we had been the world’s fifth strongest economy.
The gist of recent posts seem to be, in a nutshell, that some posters hope (or are confident) that Hull will thrive once we have fully relinquished membership of the EU?

I really want to fully understand this. Can someone explain if people believe Hull’s position will improve because:

1.	Our economy will somehow ascend to 1st, 2nd,3rd or 4th position and there will be more wealth available for everyone, including Hull. Or
2. Do people believe our economy will continue to decline to 7th, 8th, 9th or below but that the Tory government will distribute remaining wealth more equally. Or
3.	Our economy will continue to decline but as other parts of the country spiral downwards the gap between other places and Hull will seem less acute?
user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 17:37

Lonely,
According to pro remainer's doom laden prediction after London, Hull and Humber region will least affected. Probably because we where left behind by Europe.

Christ sake Bear I offered a warm welcome to Gussy and asked why they where mad, they replied, I still offer my hand of friendship, to a fellow person, opposite side, Leicester shows there are bigger things than this soddening light hearted thread, but you and Lonely ignore my welcome and pick that line.
not the flowers/cake/hugs/handshake/wine or gin offered or coming inside its snowing outside welcome.
No a one line of Leicester, stop spreading your hate, haven't seen one remainer say welcome.
This thread will die because your all nasty, like op threatened in the opening post, so I was been nice, why bother are you like this irl?

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 17:39

User147
All these things that the UK sells to the world
it already is
so what will change after Brexit ?

bearbehind · 27/02/2018 17:42

user my comment wasn’t nasty, I simply pointing out that mentioning Leicester was completely unnecessary.

It’s like you are trying to get people to agree with your view by citing an incident where 5 tragically died as reason we should all back Leave.

If find that abhorrent.

Doubletrouble99 · 27/02/2018 17:46

I think you should just circle off then Bear.

I was hardly suggesting that UK beer was going to be our saviour. The point is that some of the most unlikely products appeal to other countries.
User said that Bridlington was a great hub for importing cars in the past. It could be again. I don't think there's much point in getting hung up on the fact that it was Ladas. User wasn't suggesting we import Ladas again.

Rossetti - we only export 8% of our GDP to the EU so if we did 1% in apps that would be really good!!!

bearbehind · 27/02/2018 17:49

we only export 8% of our GDP to the EU so if we did 1% in apps that would be really good!!!

FFS, it really is like pulling teeth isn’t it Hmm

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 27/02/2018 17:50

It’s like you are trying to get people to agree with your view by citing an incident where 5 tragically died as reason we should all back Leave.

It was nothing of the sort!

You're really grasping at straws now.

bearbehind · 27/02/2018 17:52

I’m not grasping at straws at all faith that comment about Leicester was completely unnecessary.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 27/02/2018 17:54

Did he 'cite an incident where 5 tragically died as a reason we should all back leave'?

Did he fuck.

Grasping. At. Straws.

Doubletrouble99 · 27/02/2018 17:55

Like pulling teeth Bear what are you on? I was having a little joke!!

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 17:55

Lonely,
After Talkin and DG comments about US beers, Brexit is fucked before we start.
I would say try
Newsome Brewery,
Woldtop,
Jennings,
Black Sheep,
Salcombe,
Sharps,
Palmers,
Fullers
They are all British, available in M & S, ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury's and many other shops online.
When ever we holiday in different parts of Uk, most years, have been abroad since 2010, we try and buy local craft beers and we buy them as gifts for friends birthdays and Xmas presents.
See Talkin and DG would rather buy foreign beers, I would rather try the 1000,s of Uk beers/Ciders before I bought foreign.
That's may be why I think there is a future to export, they have given up already and rolled over to America.

bearbehind · 27/02/2018 17:56

Ok faith, why else was it relevant on this thread in the context of these discussions?

bearbehind · 27/02/2018 17:57

I was having a little joke!!

Even if you meant it as a joke, there are leavers who believe figures like that.

Figmentofmyimagination · 27/02/2018 17:58

lonelyplanet as I've posted depressingly in the past, I fear the answer is 3.
