This may be the last Brexit Arms thread that I will host.

It was intended to be a non-partisan and relatively light hearted thread for posters on both sides of the divide, but unfortunately this seems to have proved impossible so far.

It is not supposed to be a place for the disgruntled Remainer to use as an outlet to abuse and kick out at their perceived enemy.

I will give it one last go in the hope that things will change.

So.... onwards to Brexit....

Why do you come on this thread?
is it that you can’t keep away from us?

surferjet · 27/02/2018 14:16

It’s just weird that you want to keep talking to people who are clearly so beneath you.
Hmm

Hasenstein · 27/02/2018 14:19

You may all be comfortable with the colonial aspirations of the EU project, but I am not.

But these are the very type of trade deals we are supposedly going to be striking once we're unshackled from the EU. If you see these as "colonial aspirations", what would be different about us doing it? We've been party to all the negotiations in all the trade deals listed above, which you decry as colonial aspirations, and will be seeking the same after Brexit.

DGRossetti · 27/02/2018 14:19

It’s just weird that you want to keep talking to people who are clearly so beneath you.

Therapy.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 27/02/2018 14:21

Little tip for you - why don’t you go away.*

Make me.

I wonder who can get this thread pulled quickest ?*

Confused You are really fucking weird.
surferjet · 27/02/2018 14:27

Just have to ignore him faith, hopefully that’ll make him go away.
But I doubt it.

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 14:29

DG, Lonely, bear, Londonmum,
It wasn't a shock to be that 17.1 million voted leave, I was shocked remain got 48%.
I have given remainers(moaners) numerous reasons
I have written loads of posts, why Hull and ERYC areas voted leave, but you are not listening
How many of walked the streets campaigning remain?
How many in a Ukip hotspot?
Honest questions, you can ignore; but I know why Hull/ERYC voted leave, you 20 months later are still attacking Surfer and Faith, You attacked me when I said I changed my mind, you attacked rocketgirl.
but you still don't get it Brexit
Instead of wise cracks and attack dog tactics, if you politely listened, and took in our honest reasons, thought about and engaged in polite discussion you might learn something'
It really is up to you

Doubletrouble99 · 27/02/2018 14:29

Why don't we discuss Liam Fox's excellent speech earlier in a reasonable and non confrontational manner?

surferjet · 27/02/2018 14:30

Doubletrouble99

I haven’t heard it yet!

Doubletrouble99 · 27/02/2018 14:40

It was excellent Surfer. He was very clear in what his dept. has been doing for the last 20 mths. He talked about the increase in developed countries and how their spending power is increasing and will do so much more than in the EU. He talked about our strengths how new opportunities in tech and other industries will grow so much more than the trade in the EU, how best we can capitalise on these and make the most of free trade deals throughout the world. He talked about how his dept. were helping small and medium sized businesses develop their ability to export and how our exports had increased in recent times. He talked about how we have in the past a great advocate for free trade and how we should take up that mantel again.

Desperatelyseekingsun · 27/02/2018 14:41

The demographics of leave votes highlight some of the reasons people voted leave, I don't see any great mystery in it. It doesn't mean people will get any of what they thought they were voting for.
I am on this thread because we are going to leave and I want to get some idea of what people see as being better after we have left, not meaningless sound bites about sovereignty but actual specifics. I have assumed that leavers committed enough to contribute to these threads have more pushing their enthusiasm for leaving than a nostalgic desire for the past or anger at their current economic status.
I would like to understand how they will know that Brexit has happened in the way they foresee, what will they see or hear when they wake up in the morning that will be different and better. As I cannot imagine this the only way to find this out is to ask the people who believe differently to myself.

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 14:41

User147
Please could you tell me what positive changes you expect to see in Hull after Article 50 takes effect?
Bearing in mind that the UK will still have a centralising London obsessed Tory government or Labour but all other words remain valid

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 14:48

By the way facts for you
From The Guardian, Legathium Institute, Hull CC and Parliament (hope they count)
Hull is 10th area in England, 3rd most deprived local authority in Britain.
43% of population lives in 10% of most deprived neighbourhoods, Old Town is most deprived, Orchard Park & Greenwood 3rd most deprived.
In 2011 20.8% where on benefits, 14.1% unemployed and city employment rate was less than 63%.
Parts of city over 50% have no formal qualifications.

Then you tell me, how we sell the Eu to Hull.
I tried as a grandson of people who lived in Marfleet, the Eu gives Hull University millions, my kids and I have no Gcse's, and the EU built your community centre, Aye but they paid Fenners and Birds eye to leave, my Dad, uncle, aunty and 2 kids lost their jobs thanks to it. Well it brought you, what? Actually I am not sure

The bold is a door step conservation between Middle class lady and a local woman in Preston Rd estate, who had 3 kids and was on food banks, I knew her mum, I said hi, and left to vote leave, wasn't my job to defend the undefendable

So come Europhiles, sell the EU to that lady, dare you

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 27/02/2018 14:50

Just have to ignore him faith, hopefully that’ll make him go away.
But I doubt it.

Aaah!
Is it a him?
That makes sense then.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 27/02/2018 14:51

Why don't we discuss Liam Fox's excellent speech earlier in a reasonable and non confrontational manner?

I missed it I'm afraid.
(Will probs miss TM's too on Friday).

Hasenstein · 27/02/2018 14:52

He talked about our strengths how new opportunities in tech and other industries will grow so much more than the trade in the EU, how best we can capitalise on these and make the most of free trade deals throughout the world. He talked about how his dept. were helping small and medium sized businesses develop their ability to export and how our exports had increased in recent times. He talked about how we have in the past a great advocate for free trade and how we should take up that mantel again.

But made no mention of the fact that other EU members are already doing this within the large number of trade deals it already has. Or how we would propose to conclude so many complicated trade deals of our own in a dwindlingly short timeframe. Or whether we shall be able to trade competitively under WTO rules while not destroying domestic agriculture and industry. Or what to do about services, rather than goods.

Of course he takes a selective view, it's his job to talk up his role, but there doesn't seem much new in all this or indeed much engagement with the underlying issues.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 27/02/2018 14:53

He talked about the increase in developed countries and how their spending power is increasing and will do so much more than in the EU.

This is what I'm particularly interested in.

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 14:57

Actions speak louder than words
Since the referendum and the enacting of A50
there has been lots of talk but absolutely nothing concrete.

Who are these new countries who want to buy the UKs goods and services?
THe UK already trades with the whole world.
How will that change after Brexit?

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 27/02/2018 14:59

I misread 😳

I'm interested in developing countries & how we can push for & shape a different type of globalised collaboration (I think the big trading bloc model of the EU is outdated, too protectionist & perpetuates inequalities).

mummmy2017 · 27/02/2018 15:05

I find it odd you can't understand what myself and most leavers are saying on this thread.
We don't know what changes will happen, as at this point in time there is no finished deal, or in fact a Blue Print for a Future that has never been attempted before. The future is a clear sheet and will be what we make of it, and leavers are well aware of this.
We are not going forward to unicorn land, and we really do know this, we have not got our heads in the sand, in fact we are holding our heads height to see the future as it advances.
Leaving the EU is an Adventure we want to embrace, a whole NEW direction with all the twists and turns that happen, each day as it happens.
While we just don't know details, we do know this is no impossible..

It's going to happen, and as a Leaver I am very excited about my life.

user1471450935 · 27/02/2018 15:06

Double
Like surfer not seen it or heard it, was hoping to, but daily politics was about Bristol.
desperatelyseeking
I came looking common ground, said I hoped it would be better, had changed my mind, was attacked, some poster who appeared later, who was leave but now remain warmly welcomed. Faith welcomed me, with sarcastic copy and paste welcome.
so I think many of us give up
Talkin
We are a port, yes strong links to EU ports, but we trade with EEA and EFTA counties heavily, they are close, lots of Russian shipping too, also if Liam Fox is doing deals with Africa, we have strong links to Freetown, and many Africa counties, Home of William Wilberforce, plus twinned with Freetown, we sent 100000 pounds aid during civil war and the ebola crisis.
Hull University has modern slavery links too, plus historic links to commonwealth, Whole world out there, we played an Argentina team at Beverley U18 RU, they are keen to trade, sorry just my humble thoughts

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 15:07

So you'll be pleased when they agree that the best thing is to stay in the Customs Union then Smile

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 15:11

user147
Hull is already doing all of those things within the EU.
What will change AFTER the EU?

Desperatelyseekingsun · 27/02/2018 15:11

We can push for & shape a different type of globalised collaboration (I think the big trading bloc model of the EU is outdated, too protectionist & perpetuates inequalities).

I have some sympathy for this viewpoint but leaving the EU just means we have no influence over it, we aren't going to bring it down from the outside. We are not economically powerful enough to push back globalization even if we wanted to. Far from protectionism being outdated the USA is increasingly going in this direction. Smaller economic players do not set the direction of travel and even if they could I do not see right wing economic players like Liam Fox focusing on developing trade deals that reduce inequality for other countries.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 27/02/2018 15:12

Faith welcomed me, with sarcastic copy and paste welcome.

Did I ?!
😂
Soz!

You're totes welcome here obvs - I've time for everyone except for twats.
