Sorry Slough Wink

AgnesSkinner · 10/02/2018 11:53

Slough always makes me think of David Brent doing that dance Confused

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 10/02/2018 11:55

You are grossly unrepresentative of the average Brexiter who voted against the EU on the idiotic premise that this will help England become more English.

The 'average Brexiter' voted to leave to 'help England become more English'?

Utter Bollocks, but a very good example of your shallow thinking.

mummmy2017 · 10/02/2018 12:01

We have rain as well, but it's not cold today.

It's not the immigrants here, the area is just so poor, but as we have so many holiday homes, house prices and rental rates are high, I suppose a lack of high paying jobs and poor transport links has lead to very depleted and demoralized population.
We get no EU funding and any idea's touted seem to lose momentum very quickly, and we constantly find out grants for the area go to the bigger towns in the county.
I have watch as over the last 3 decade the town center has become more and more rundown. thus any big employers have moved out of the area as the council have increased parking and council tax to balance the budgets and so due to the amount of work force available the wage rate stays at minimum, the young are leaving and the average has risen.
To put it simply people here voted overwhelmingly to leave as UK Policy which is influenced by the EU just wasn't working, and they felt they had nothing to lose by following a famous Tony Blair Quote.. "Time for a change".

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 10/02/2018 12:05

Oh no Agnes, yes poles settled there during abd after the war, there is well established Polish club.
No this was very different... If you you Google you will find all the information on it, it was really bad for a very long time.

For instance specialist centers for traumatised children used to dealing with 8 at a time were flooded by young Romanians, many children who were pregnant.. Schools couldn't cope, social services under massive strain... Etc ect.

frumpety · 10/02/2018 12:06

Lower VAT , the UK government could do that whilst in the EU , minimum is 15% , so instead of increasing it to 20% , they could have reduced it to 15% , they chose not to . Not an economist either Smile

frumpety · 10/02/2018 12:10

Rain and not cold Mummy , I will take that over the horizontal sleet currently on offer here Smile

Slough Seriously ?

user1471450935 · 10/02/2018 12:22

Frumpety
Yes I think your right, but I was thinking also different bands for different regions to, so mummy2017 area could have low rates to encourage reinvestment as could much of the North and South West, and other areas higher and London and SE highest, to encourage redistribution of Uk's wealth and prosperity.
I believe the Eu allowed lower fuel duty for extreme rural areas, but I think of top of my head it took Hawes 7 years to get it agree, by which prices had risen and it's petrol station closed. Not much use after all
See bear these are why many people grow fed up, good ideas, but it took to long. That may the our governments fault, but it was very easy to blame the Eu. In 3 years it won't

Bearbehind · 10/02/2018 12:27

user, I'm struggling to understand your posts; you seem to be setting up your own virtual government and economic policy.

I'm really not sure what the point of that is.

We need actual solutions to the issues we currently face not virtual idealistic ones.

AgnesSkinner · 10/02/2018 12:27

But Sersiously my point is that Slough is a town built upon immigration - 40% of the population is Asian or Asian British and 10% is from the EU.

user1471450935 · 10/02/2018 12:37

Frumpety and mummy,
Rain and 3 degrees here.
Minus 2 last night, so warmed up.
I am going to say bye for now, Ds1 game kicks of at 1400, I finish work at 1300, need more paint for house, then joys of watching Beverley Colts V Liceo, 70 minutes of horizontal rain, the joys of being a rugby parent. Then taxi for same one to 18 birthday party 35 miles for 1900 and then home again at 2345. The joys of parenting.
I guessing this won't change after we leave Grin
I hope all have a lovely Saturday and can I offer Brew and Cake for this afternoon and Gin and Wine for this evening. Enjoy whatever you have planned, I will check up later and post if I can add. Bye

Limer · 10/02/2018 12:45

Bearbehind I do some work with the local construction industry (West Midlands). There are fewer E Europeans on the sites now, resulting in more locals being employed, and lads coming out of apprenticeships are getting job offers.

frumpety · 10/02/2018 12:45

We could have controlled immigration a whole lot better , many other EU members do , have a quick google and see what the requirements would be for you and your family to move to say Holland and what limitations there are on your staying there .
We could also have chosen to pay people more , but we don't and every time it is mooted as an idea to increase NMW to a NLW , people throw their hands up in horror , usually small businesses for obvious reasons.

Bearbehind · 10/02/2018 12:49

I'm getting de ja vu about user; he's not the first Dad to pop up on these threads and repeatedly tell us how busy he is. It's most peculiar behaviour.

Bearbehind · 10/02/2018 12:50

limer I find that interesting given we haven't actually left yet.

user1471450935 · 10/02/2018 12:54

bear
I am trying to think of what uk could to improve itself, Frumpety ask what could a future government do, I replied.
You ask earlier for a positive I gave my idea of immigration, you called me a racist/xenophobe, I posted about my whole immigration ideas, LondonMum8 replied, I answered, she replied back. You ignored it. Sad
People said about a brexit coalition and I said how it could work, and how I like to see Britain go forward, no point looking back, you ridicule meSad
I thought this was a discussion thread, where we could discuss all things brexit, good and bad. Grin
I won't join you and say, quoting Private Frazer " we're all doomed"
I think we will be if you think that.
Sorry but I just try to talk to people, I will never meet in rl, and try and contect and see if there is common ground, if that isn't allowed please say so and I happily withdraw and lurk.

frumpety · 10/02/2018 12:55

Bear we the UK haven't left yet , but I know a couple of people who feel uncomfortable living here now following the referendum and are making plans to leave , mores the pity Sad

Bearbehind · 10/02/2018 12:57

I understand that frumpety but I just don't see it as a positive.

time4chocolate · 10/02/2018 12:57

Limer I find that interesting given we haven't actually left yet.

So when remainers report on the large number of EU NHS staff that have been leaving, it is as a direct result of Brexit, however, when a Leavers says EU people aren’t coming over in the same numbers then it’s not Brexit related because we haven’t left yet - I’m not getting the logic there Confused

AgnesSkinner · 10/02/2018 12:58

Bear you can probably factor in the fall in the value of the pound and increasing wages and opportunities in Eastern Europe as economies over there are rapidly expanding and improving.

Bearbehind · 10/02/2018 13:01

user I'm not saying you can't contribute, only that I find your posts confusing.

  • You are a Remainer turned Leaver but haven't really explain why
  • You want immigration controls so there's less EU car washers and pizza delivery drivers.
  • You are asking questions about a virtual government set up and a fantasy economic policy.
  • And all off that is interspersed with lengthy detail of what you are doing today or your life history.

Forgive me if I don't answer every point you make; I genuinely don't understand where your going with it.

Bearbehind · 10/02/2018 13:04

time as I replied to frumpety I find it interesting because Leavers see this as a benefit of leaving but we've not actually left yet.

If people are feeling so unwelcome they are leaving of their own accord you can guarantee a large proportion of the ones who leave will be the ones we actually need and wanted to stay.

mummmy2017 · 10/02/2018 13:05

It's to do with the Pound to Euro rate.
Working here isn't paying for EU nationals so they are going home.
There was a big article in a newspaper about how it's not worth working here as the difference doesn't pay for the expense of staying here and the travel to go home.

Also someone on One of the morning news programs said they judge build projects in London by going into the roof and looking to see how many cranes they can see, and it seems there are twice as many this year than last, for the Banking area's, not scientific, but as they said it's the first large increase in buildings they have seen in a while, and the Estate Agents have said they also have noticed an upturn in the rental markets in the same area.

AgnesSkinner · 10/02/2018 13:19

It’s a bit more scientific than that mummmy check the Deloitte London crane survey for instance.
