@Doubletrouble99 That was obviously aimed at the person boasting their family members studying all over the world. Was that yourself by any chance?

time4chocolate · 20/01/2018 17:59

Olivia - you’ve started early tonightShock

AgnesSkinner · 20/01/2018 18:00

Many more students from the EU come to the UK to study, mainly because we speak English, if that changes it will mean more places available for British students, which I know is a real problem for Scottish students in Scotland.

My understanding is that Scottish unis have a capped number of places available for students on home fees (Β£1.8k) - Scottish and EU. From a financial standpoint unis need to attract English students paying Β£9k and international students paying Β£18k+. A decrease in EU students may free up more places for Scottish students, but when some unis are allocating places to higher fee paying students first or only offering clearing places through UCAS to English students it seems indicative that it’s a chronic underfunding by the Scottish Government which is disadvantaging Scottish students as much as anything.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 20/01/2018 18:01

Yeah @FaithHopeCharityDesperation you're right. I did call you a fucken twat. Oh wait that was you calling me that.

Yes, I did.

Except I spelled it 'fucking twat'.

AgnesSkinner · 20/01/2018 18:05

And just to add, free tuition for Scottish students at Scottish unis is fantastic, but it comes with the downside that it’s not a level playing field against fee paying students.

mummmy2017 · 20/01/2018 18:09

Olivia I think you have to be the most racist nasty person i have ever seen on MN.

You levels of anger hark back to the refusal to accept there was a vote, it happened and the relationship between the EU and the UK is breaking up. Do you understand that your views that there will be some sort of kiss and make up as if nothing has happened, are truly deluded.
You spitefulness, which is constant is shocking...

Thank god in real life your views will be overlooked, and unheard.

Moussemoose · 20/01/2018 18:12

Mummy how do you feel about restricting educational opportunities. Do you think it will impact negatively on future generations? Do you worry your grandchildren may be denied the opportunity to study abroad? Or that study abroad will only be available to the rich and well connected.

Moussemoose · 20/01/2018 18:13

Did voting Brexit mean you all had an irony bypass?

Doubletrouble99 · 20/01/2018 18:15

Londonmum - I certainly wasn't boosting I as trying to point out that it's not that difficult to study where ever you like and I have direct knowledge of that. All the relatives I mentioned went to a local comprehensive school in a northern mill town and don't have family who are able to fund them. They worked holidays and weekends to get the money together to be able to go.
I think you are showing your prejudice Londonmum in making a comment like that.

should read boasting!

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 20/01/2018 18:17

Your 'humour' is spectacularly unfunny though.

It belongs in the 1970s.

mummmy2017 · 20/01/2018 18:24

Why is it so important to study abroad, only about 21k of 533k went in 2015, this isn't a great amount. 100k of the students who came here were from outside the UK about 40k were EU.

If it's that important I am sure the Govenment will manage to fiance the fees, just as they do for our own students, after all students manage to study in the USA, and that's not in the EU.

How come your suddenly so hot and beating people with the student theme... when most people wouldn't even have a passing thought of going to study anywhere but the UK.....

twofingerstoEverything · 20/01/2018 18:28

Many more students from the EU come to the UK to study, mainly because we speak English
Does it occur to you that when we leave the EU, the only country within it that has English as their primary language will be Ireland? The importance of knowing the English language could well be devalued by our departure.
At the moment EU students are coming because they pay the same fees as UK students (in England). Do you think English universities will still be an attractive proposition if they are charged full overseas students fees? The difference will be approx Β£5K/year.

if that changes it will mean more places available for British students, which I know is a real problem for Scottish students in Scotland.
Maybe a problem in Scotland, but the cap in England was removed in 2015-16, so there's no shortage of places there.

mummmy2017 · 20/01/2018 18:28

Olivia, if you acted as you do in real life too a person, and verbally attacked them and said thing your PRETENDING were just a joke, you'd be in court , and in very big trouble...

My sense of humor is fine, you how ever are coming over as a sad sack.

AgnesSkinner · 20/01/2018 18:31

Doubletrouble99 but your examples (studying in Aus and NZ or courses with a year abroad) are unlikely to be affected by Brexit.

What will be affected are students wanting to study a complete undergrad or post grad course in the EU, or taking advantage of the Erasmus scheme (as my DH did) which will no longer be available unless some special deal is done.

mummmy2017 · 20/01/2018 18:33

5k, extra for a UK education. peanuts, when the wage they earn due to being at an UK far outstrips...
Doom and Gloom..
Just say they don't come and just where else do you think they will go, which uni has the kudos of saying I went to Oxford or Cambridge?
The parents of these children are not poor, in the most part, and it will simply mean that there is even more of a premium for being able to attend...

twofingerstoEverything · 20/01/2018 18:35

How come your suddenly so hot and beating people with the student theme... when most people wouldn't even have a passing thought of going to study anywhere but the UK.....
mummy People are, I think, using studying/the situation of UK universities as an example of damage caused by Brexit. There are a lot more examples we could cite. On the last thread we talked a lot about the NI situation. We've also talked about loss of financial services. I get the sense that we're not really welcome to talk about the increase in racist incidents and the fact that EU citizens/taxpayers are leaving in droves particularly from the poor old NHS... and so, for the time being, we're talking about studying in Europe if that's okay with you.

OliviaD68 · 20/01/2018 18:38

Increase in racist incidents

twofingerstoEverything · 20/01/2018 18:42

mummy
5k, extra for a UK education. peanuts, when the wage they earn due to being at an UK far outstrips...

It's Β£5K/year more. If that's 'peanuts' to you, then what can I say? Love to see the stats relating to the rest of your claim.

mummmy2017 · 20/01/2018 18:45

I was interested in your views, and have been reading.
Just shocked at how quickly it got spiteful..

I do think it would be good to see some kind of grant scheme for students who want to study in a foreign UNI, as some people really are gifted with language and I can see as the make up of the UK changes, there will be more children with dual passports, who would like to take the chance to in a parents home country..

twofingerstoEverything · 20/01/2018 18:54

Perhaps if you stopped with the doom and gloom stuff, Mummy, we could have a better conversation. It comes across like you're trying to shut people down by dismissing their concerns as 'doom and gloom'.

twofingerstoEverything · 20/01/2018 18:56

which uni has the kudos of saying I went to Oxford or Cambridge
Most EU students who came to the UK to study didn't go to Oxbridge, so the kudos point is a bit moot.

AgnesSkinner · 20/01/2018 18:59

some people really are gifted with language

The huge plus for studying an undergrad or post grad course at an EU uni is that they are taught in English (although MFL A level is often required, at least for undergrad courses).

I can see as the make up of the UK changes, there will be more children with dual passports

Irish passports maybe.

mummmy2017 · 20/01/2018 19:04

I was trying to point out the 5K extra isn't a lot of money, if the return over a life time of working, is off set by 15k a year as a starting wage over someone in a manual job with no qualifications.
The amount you paid for your education very soon is off set by the extra pay you get and as you rise up the work ladder the pay off can be enormous.
leaving the EU does not mean people won't study, and do courses, it's not going to stop people studying anywhere they want, it just takes more effort to achieve this.
