The US/Canada border is a hard border - how will that work for NI?

AgnesSkinner · 24/01/2018 11:08

Varadkar does not see US-Canada style β€˜hard border’ as Brexit solution

www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/varadkar-does-not-see-us-canada-style-hard-border-as-brexit-solution-1.3194939?mode=amp

Speaking after inspecting a crossing near Niagra Falls on Wednesday, Mr Varadkar effectively ruled out using a similar system as a model for the Irish Border after Britain leaves the European Union.

After his visit to the Queenstown-Lewistown, the Taoiseach said the crossing was β€œhighly efficient” but he then added: β€œMake no mistake - it’s a hard border...There are armed guards, dogs, flags and checkpoints.”

I was gonna post some heartwarming news about Ford closing engine factories down in Leave towns post Brexit - "they're so mean".

But I'd like to get mummmy to respond to my questions...

Bearbehind · 24/01/2018 11:13

Aside from agnes point that the US border is a hard border, I'm not sure why he's even talking about any borders given we've committed to full alignment with SM rules anyway.

If want frictionless access we are still effectively in the SM in all but name- that is our goal so I wouldn't expect anything else to be discussed.

The divergence comes from the fact we think we can retain access for free and the EU won't allow that.

Seems not as clear cut as you think, It's the EU that have the problem on this one, as they have 69% invested through London...

mummmy2017 · 24/01/2018 11:20

Olivia, this ? is a question mark,
You seem to just post drivel that doesn't mean anything....
Ergo no answer needed.

JWIM · 24/01/2018 11:24

mummy perhaps you missed my question, complete with '?' for clarity

"mummy sorry to disappoint you but the fact is at this point in time you have neither got the UK coming out of the EU*, nor have our Gov't achieved not having to pay what will be increasing amounts to the EU. Your view on the state of the EU budget is just that, a view.

*It might have a different name or acronym but SM and CU membership, paid for and with no say in the rules is the current, and only, outcome that fits with both the UK Gov't statements on the border between NI and RoI and UK wide alignment with EU regs and would also suit the EU side of the negotiating table.

What will you do if this remains the outcome of your once in a lifetime chance to vote to leave?"

OliviaD68 · 24/01/2018 11:28

Love (mummmy), EMIR, UCITS, AIFMD and MIFID are hardly drivel. Answer the question. Why should UK based funds no longer under EU regulation be able to accept funds for clients in the EU?

Second, what things should the City look forward to being able to do outside the EU?

Third, what higher value services could the City sell to the EU given lack of passporting and the possible introduction of taxes like withholding tax (WHT)?

howabout · 24/01/2018 11:29

I was gonna post some heartwarming news about Ford closing engine factories down in Leave towns post Brexit - "they're so mean".

Suggest you have a look at the latest ONS employment stats for this morning. Wee bit of a concern that London is the drag factor. Just as well the rest of the South is covering its blushes.

On regional rebalancing see Remain supporting Sir Jim O'Neill's comments from earlier in the week.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-42769090

"... some parts of the country, led by the North West [of England], are actually doing way better than people seem to realise or appreciate."

"Because of course, in principle, I share the views of many that Brexit is a really weird thing for the UK to impose on itself from an economic perspective.

"And maybe this [better global growth] means the country's going to be able to cope with Brexit better than certainly somebody like me might have thought some time ago.

"But I would quickly add at the same time, I have felt for a good couple of years, as important as Brexit is, it isn't the most important thing facing Britain's future."

He said that global growth, better productivity and rebalancing government policies to support the north of England and other regions beyond London was much more important.

There was some evidence, Lord O'Neill argued, that was now happening.

He said that the "Brexiteers are going to be like the cat with the cream. They're like 'there you go, told you so', which of course is ridiculous".

mummmy2017 · 24/01/2018 11:47

But according to You we won't be able to trade with no passport.

Seems lots of the money in Hedgefunds is invested from NON EU coutries, meaning the EU will have a problem with getting investment and may well lose the money invested as they are intending to introduce charges which will then mean investors pull of of EU hedgefunds and invest in the more profitable worldwide hedgefunds run by London firms.

Outside of the EU, Banking will be able to provide services to WORLDWIDE companies, with less regulations, after all the EU is a club, so does want to protect it's own arse... No one has said this won't happen, just that it will take a few years at which point the financial services will recover.

If as said there is no financial agreement on serivces, maybe we should just wait and see, after all you can't thing the EU will be wiling to just STOP on March 2019... Insurance? Futures? these will still be needed by the EU

JWIM · 24/01/2018 11:52

Continuing with the status quo after March 2019 is what has been acknowledged only this morning by the SoS for Exiting the EU. And whether it is called a transition or an implementation period, and despite suggestion of an end date for such period, it will continue until the new (but same as now with a new name) agreement between the UK and EU is signed.

Yes, mummy these are all moving. euro activities. Lloyd's is establishing an insurance market in Brussels.

Fund managers are moving the operations and setting up funds in Luxembourg and Dublin.

Banking activities are worldwide up to a point. But only if skills can be concentrated.

NY covers the US and Latam. Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo cover Asia. Sydney and Melbourne cover, well Oz.

Why are hedge funds in London more profitable mummmy? Do you think London fund managers are better than elsewhere?

mummmy2017 · 24/01/2018 12:03

I told you I am not an expert. like you lot think you are.
I have no shame in admitting this, that I am willing to wait and see what the person PAID to look into all this comes up with.
This is all conjecture on our parts.
Hands up I just don't know, but I do know it's not going to be hole in the pants arse falling out as your trying to portray.
If there was no hope, then May would have had to back track by now, she hasn't, nor have the MP's, The bill went through, Straws much...

OliviaD68 · 24/01/2018 12:14

@mummmy2017

You ... don't know ... but you know ...?

Alright then!

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 24/01/2018 12:26

'I'm sorry' before or after calling someone an idiot/troll/pathetic/ignorant is baffling to me.

You either mean it, or you don't.
If you don't mean it, don't say it - if you do mean it then why use a mealy-mouthed 'I'm sorry, but'?

P/A bollocks.

mummmy2017 · 24/01/2018 12:45

@Olivia

You finally get it, I don't know, I know I don't know, and I don't mind that I don't know...

Someone is paid to see what can be done.

whooptifeckindo · 24/01/2018 12:46

Not sure I vote for someone on the basis that they sound clever.

LondonMum8 · 24/01/2018 12:50

@Faith: A failed analysis. I'm sorry simply because I find someone being either an idiot or a putinbot to be pitiful circumstances, although I appreciate some people may happily be either.

mummmy2017 · 24/01/2018 13:02

Missed the comment, and to be honest I don't care what names you call me, I will never meet you, could walk past you in the street and wouldn't even care. You really don't matter in my life.

Happily here , waiting and watching too see what 2019 brings, love how it's time for a change.

LondonMum8 · 24/01/2018 13:37

I wasn't really expecting an acknowledgement but that response is close enough, thanks.

Case closed.

mummmy2017 · 24/01/2018 13:39

Glad you finally accept you have no control on anything, and can see all anyone here can do is wait..... Maybe there is hope yet.

MichaelBendfaster · 24/01/2018 15:18

For reasons too complicated to explain, I have an English-Mongolian dictionary.

No, go on, tell us Grin

GhostofFrankGrimes · 24/01/2018 15:19

Glad you finally accept you have no control on anything, and can see all anyone here can do is wait..... Maybe there is hope yet.

So much for taking back control. Why do leavers here remind me of contestants on Deal or No Deal?

whooptifeckindo · 24/01/2018 15:21

Well .............., nah. Now I want to make it sound more exciting.
