This is interesting to read... weighted to the results we got.

AgnesSkinner · 21/01/2018 20:13

As there were no exit polls at the Referendum, all the available data is just survey data.

And surveys found that older age groups turned out in greater numbers to vote.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/01/2018 20:14

Actually, research by the LSE and Opinium found it was more like 64% of 18-24s that voted in the Referendum.

Yep

Bit fed up of the agism around this subject

JWIM · 21/01/2018 20:21

Still waiting for Mummy to acknowledge that the statement about me with regard to stating I wanted a second referendum was incorrect, not factual, made up, a lie, a misrepresentation - whichever Mummy wishes to use.

AgnesSkinner · 21/01/2018 20:22

Your link is weighted to only those who voted and shows what PP have already said - Leave voters tend to be older / lower levels of education / Tory or UKIP / less politically engaged / lower income.

Moussemoose · 21/01/2018 20:23

It's me and my unicorn that want the second referendum other remainers disagree with us. Me and my unicorn that is.

AgnesSkinner · 21/01/2018 20:23

Hey Rufus long time no see - how are you?

MsHooliesCardigan · 21/01/2018 20:25

For complicated reasons, I have spent much of the last few months staying in hotels in London. I don’t think I have come across a single receptionist/waiter/ waitress/cleaner/barman/barmaid is who is UK born - not one.
So many of them have gone out of their way to be kind to me. It literally disgusts me to have those people think that we don’t want them here.
It disgusts me. It really does. I feel ashamed and embarrassed.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/01/2018 20:26

Im fine thank you agnes

mummmy2017 · 21/01/2018 20:37

Still waiting for Mummy to acknowledge that the statement about me with regard to stating I wanted a second referendum was incorrect, not factual, made up, a lie, a misrepresentation - whichever Mummy wishes to use.

I take back that you personally have ever said this JWIM. Please accept my apologise for thinking you had been part of that particular conversation.

Moussemoose Sun 21-Jan-18 10:42:08
Hopefully the deal we are forced to accept is so awful when it goes before parliament another referendum will be called.

Moussemoose Sun 21-Jan-18 10:45:52
Although HoC can technically stop Brexit I don't think they will.

Another referendum is needed for political if not legal reasons.

This potential new referendum needs to be framed carefully, with

perhaps a low turnout or small majority forcing a third.

OliviaD68 Sun 21-Jan-18 12:17:05
Bear: from the Lords and public opinion.

Perhaps Labour will change its tune as it sees voters leaving them because of Corbyn's view on Brexit.

At this stage, I can't say your view is wrong or right. Or that mine is either.

JWIM · 21/01/2018 20:46

Thank you. Accuracy and fact based statements are important to all our understanding.

Moussemoose · 21/01/2018 20:57

Yep that's me! I want a second referendum. I will explain and details and answer any queries.

AgnesSkinner · 21/01/2018 21:02

Arf at writing stuff and then deleting it - I suspect lots of us do that!

OliviaD68 · 21/01/2018 21:02

@Moussemoose

What would the question be?

What rules and consequences around disinformation?

Moussemoose · 21/01/2018 21:13

The question is the big issue. Traditionally people prefer to vote 'yes' they like to be positive. So they way the question is framed is an issue.

Rules and consequences were pitifully lacking as the last Bill was rushed. IF ( big if) another referendum was called I would like to see a higher bar set rather than a simple majority. This would prevent the "we got one more vote" nonsense.

In terms of misinformation in the digital age this is an issue all modern democracies need to grapple with. Whose truth is real? Ask mummy, her 'truth' is very different to yours. Unfortunately.

HoC writes the Bill, it is as good as they want it to be. Tories couldn't give a toss hence the mess we are in. I paraphrase obvs.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 21/01/2018 21:38

If there were to be a second Ref (which I don't think there should be, but hypothetically) then the status quo option would have to be 'we're leaving'.

That is, if there were thresholds etc set & they weren't met, then we would continue with Brexit.

OliviaD68 · 21/01/2018 21:45

@Moussemoose

I think the next ref should be on the final terms of a deal. If the people like it they vote for it. If they don't we withdraw A50.

Controls should contain serious civil (eg injunctions) & criminal offences for making false or recklessly misleading statements with a view to procuring votes (& / or aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring others to do so).

And funding transparency. Avoiding the Russian money.

Moussemoose · 21/01/2018 21:45

I actually think change should always have a higher threshold, that's just good constitutional practice.

I am aware of the irony of a Brexit supporter agreeing with this! "We won on a small, simple majority but you have to have more". Oh the irony.

A second referendum should have a higher threshold and a 2/3 rd HoC majority. Anything less should trigger a third and final referendum. Big argument against this is voter fatigue. This would impact on Brexit supporters less well educated electorate, in that they are less likely to vote.

All speculation obvs.

Moussemoose · 21/01/2018 21:49

@OliviaD68 I agree in principle to controls on reckless statements. This type of control is retrospective though, too late was the cry. General Elections could see individual seats having anther vote but in a referendum??

The UK is just not a direct democracy and we should never have gone down this route.

HelenOfTroysRuZ · 21/01/2018 21:51

@AgnesSkinner
PS - if you cut and paste from a website, it’s good form to add the link.
Here's one...
It gives Brexit voting behaviour vs age grouping.
Pity I can't just add the graphic though.

Moussemoose · 21/01/2018 21:58

Helen thanks for the link. It's a shame we can't give a weighting to each vote based on how long you have to live with the result.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 21/01/2018 22:02

It's a shame we can't give a weighting to each vote based on how long you have to live with the result.

I'm presuming that was meant as a joke - that's an appalling suggestion if not.

mummmy2017 · 21/01/2018 22:05

Can anyone help me find this data.

How many people voted in the Referendum. Not by % but by age and how many millions in each age group.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 21/01/2018 22:12

Any data is just supposition Mummmy - a broad picture extrapolated from people who answered a survey & assuming they were honest.

AgnesSkinner · 21/01/2018 22:14

That’s from the Lord Ashcroft post Ref poll - the data tables can be downloaded here too:
