Especially given that we were always perfectly free to opt for blue if people if people were that desperate?

as I said up thread
I have a blue passport
it comes with a Trump
be careful what you wish for

Todayissunny · 22/12/2017 18:47

I would prefer to keep my red one. The blue one will be seen as a symbol of brexit whicv I don't want to be associated with.

DeepanKrispanEven · 22/12/2017 18:51

Could you confirm the source of existence of blue passports in parallel with the current British ones, and his someine would apply for one?

I meant "we" as in the UK, not individuals. You just have to look at the colours of passports for different EU countries - they're certainly not all the same uniform maroon, and the Croatian one is blue. There is no reason why we as a country could not have stuck with blue if the nation was that desperate for blue passports.

I still have my passport from 1983-93. Here it is against a black background - you can just see that it’s not black, but you could certainly be forgiven for thinking it was at a casual glance.

Nigel Farage has called the return to blue passports "the first real tangible victory" for people who voted for Brexit.

This long after the referendum and that's it?

DeepanKrispanEven · 22/12/2017 18:59

If only we'd known that blue passports was all it took to make Brexiters happy. We could have saved ourselves an awful lot of trouble.

Nobody with a brain does, no. And apparently this is worth spending half a billion pounds on, when we can't fund decent healthcare.

Ta1kinPeace · 22/12/2017 19:44

NB
The shape, size, layout and biometric info in the passport will be EXACTLY same as the current
just the hue will change

as control over passports lies with the UN and the CAA and the FAA
NOT the UK

lljkk · 22/12/2017 19:47

Could we just rerun the Referendum to be about red and Navy passports.. ONLY. Pretty please?

Mistigri · 22/12/2017 19:47

It will cost the tax payer absolutely nothing

This is absolute rubbish. You should be embarrassed. It's this sort of stuff that makes some of us suspect that brexiters might be a bit underinformed.

I have no idea what the cost will be - and if it were simply a question of changing colour it might not be enormous - but the idea that it will cost nothing betrays a fundamental understanding of how government and business work. At the very least there will be an initial set up cost, plus the cost of paying people to manage the project (choose the "right" navy colour, order the inks, set-up the printing presses, do test runs, obtain approvals).

VerticalBlinds · 22/12/2017 19:49

I have a vision in my head now that the triumphant brexiteers imagine swanning though empty airports in a 1970s style with a wave of their magic retro passports and then getting onto a fancy jet and having a g&t with joan collins.

lljkk · 22/12/2017 19:58

Apparently the passport-manuf. contract is up for renewal in 2019, @Mistigirl, so there really is no extra cost, b/c they were going to do all this rebidding/quality upgrade etc. about this point, anyway. The costs were planned years ago.

At my work a big contract got extended with minimum quality assurance and retendering, precisely b/c of Brexit (govt funded, they don't have civil servants who can spare the time until end 2019). So that kind of thing is happening, but this isn't an example.

Corcory · 22/12/2017 20:10

Misti - your talking 'rubbish'. De la Rue's contract is for 5 years it runs out and the passport contract has to be bid for. The passport is 'changed' every 5 years as biometrics improve and in order to reduce the likelihood of it being falsified.
The blue colour is standard and there will be fewer letters as it won't include EU on the cover. The contract will be awarded to which ever company's bid meets the parameters of the proposed contract and is the cheapest. This could be De la Rue or another company in Europe. Ironic eh!!

Ifailed · 22/12/2017 20:41

Misti point still stands - it will not be for free, so will cost. Unless brexit people are suggesting that security printers will be so overcome with the opportunity to print millions of UK passports without the dreaded EU label they'll do it for nothing?

Ta1kinPeace · 22/12/2017 20:42

As a dual passport holder
I could not give a shit what it looks like
I just want to know what travel rights it gives me.

I hang onto my US one because it has more up sides than down sides
it happens to be blue

I have my UK one as it has many uses
it happens to be purple

DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER

As somebody who only became an EU citizen a few years ago
you Brits really cannot conceive what a shitstorm of visa and immigration rules you have just brought down upon yourselves

ha ferkin ha
my US one still has full rights Xmas Grin

DilysMoon · 22/12/2017 20:54

Could not care less what colour my passport is, what a bizarre thing to care about. Vague memory of the family passport being black with a window?

I understand that UK could have adopted a blue passport at any stage but we haven't done. Same as we could have exercised more control over immigration etc but didn't. Conveniently blame it all on the baddy EU. God Brexit depresses me, cannot believe how low our country has sunk.

laudanum · 22/12/2017 21:05

Nope. I love my red one.

Lindibop · 22/12/2017 21:15

I've still got my first blue passport and look forward to my next one being blue

I kept my very first blue one as a keepsake though there have been two red ones since it expired. I look forward to getting a blue one again. It felt very special.

Ive not lived in the Uk for decades so I don't identify with any political party or cause. My politics are relevant to where I live so Im not sure about the colour of a passport being an indication of a persons politics or views on Brexit.

Lindibop · 22/12/2017 21:17

you Brits really cannot conceive what a shitstorm of visa and immigration rules you have just brought down upon yourselves

I think you exaggerate.

Corcory · 22/12/2017 21:18

It will not cost the tax payer any extra money. You will obviously be charged for a new passport as and when you want to renew it but the point is it will not cost any extra to the British tax payer who doesn't want a passport.

Abra1d · 22/12/2017 21:24

you Brits really cannot conceive what a shitstorm of visa and immigration rules you have just brought down upon yourselves

Ah, schadenfreude, eh?

Ta1kinPeace · 22/12/2017 22:09

lindi / abra

Which countries have you had to get visas for in the last ten years ?
When were you last locked up by customs for incorrect paperwork?
Do you get your passport stamped and checked when you go through an EU border ? I do ....

Brits are unbelievably arrogant at thinking that they will retain all their current EU passport rights when they leave

The UK charges £1200 for a non EU work visa
why should the EU not do the same when the UK leaves ?

Getting a UK passport costs upwards of £3000
t'will be the same for Brits in France and Spain and Greece

woman11017 · 22/12/2017 22:09

Not polling very well, these passeports

Does anyone actually care about blue passports?
Corcory · 22/12/2017 22:19

It doesn't say people don't 'like' the passports. The pole says that most people don't think the colour is very important which it isn't.

Ta1kinPeace · 22/12/2017 22:27

Poll
not Pole

Brexiters are crap at spelling ....
