Thought I'd dust off the optics & open the bar for the festive period Xmas Smile

If any of the the old crowd are still around, then do pop in for a Christmas catch up & join me in toasting the end of the beginning!

Onward! To Brexit!

Yep slowly but surely we inch forward to freedom as I say good news

OliviaD68 · 09/01/2018 17:20

@InfiniteSheldon

Freedom from what?

What are you looking forward to being able to do outside the EU that you can't do today?

NameChanger22 · 09/01/2018 17:23

Olivia - she probably wants the freedom to sell bendy bananas.

OliviaD68 · 09/01/2018 17:37

@NameChanger22

Possibly ... except the bendy banana rule (which DOES exist believe it or not) is part of the Codex Alimentarius from ...

The United Nations.

Maybe we should hold a referendum to leave the UN so we can buy bendy bananas ?

NameChanger22 · 09/01/2018 17:44

Maybe she wants the freedom to build a wall around the UK so nobody can ever leave or enter again?

OliviaD68 · 09/01/2018 17:47

@NameChanger22

Well we kind of have a natural one. Liquid. Called the ocean. I guess one could swim it.

Maybe we can get a discount from Trump ... before he gets incarcerated?

NameChanger22 · 09/01/2018 17:52

The ocean isn't as good as real coastal wall, paid for by Mexicans. People can still get in and out without a real wall, they find ways.

Please Sheldon, put us out of our misery. I want to know what real freedom looks like.

InfiniteSheldon · 09/01/2018 18:14

Freedom from the corruption and rank arrogance of the unaccountable undemocratic EU but you know that so maybe go be lady somewhere else?

CardinalSin · 09/01/2018 18:23

Freedom to enjoy the corruption and rank arrogance of the unaccountable undemocratic DUP government we currently suffer...

OliviaD68 · 09/01/2018 18:31

@InfiniteSheldon

  1. Arrogance perhaps. I suppose that is a general trait of politicians. Are you perhaps implying that Westminster is immune from this?

  2. Corruption. Please point to facts. What are you referring to? I've often heard this and researched but have found no evidence. I would love to know.

Are you aware that there is an independent body which audits the EU for this sort of thing? They have not found anything that I'm aware.

But again, perhaps there is none of this going on in Westminster? Like the secret subsidy to Virgin trains ...?

  1. Undemocratic. Really? The EU is significantly more democratic than the UK where we have:
  • Unelected head of state
  • Unelected cabinet not subject to any confirmation
  • Unelected second chamber - Lords
  • First past the post process

On the other hand, the EU bodies are directly elected by EU citizens. But let's not let facts get in the way of a good story.

The attached graphic shows all of this.

InfiniteSheldon · 09/01/2018 18:41

Yes all possibly all politicians or at least most of them are arrogant so I choose not to have another layer which I consider superfluous , of them.
For me the EU is fundamentally undemocratic as I never voted to join it never would voted to join it at the moment the country was given a choice on voting with a to join the federal state of Europe it said no.
If you don't think the EU is corrupt if the pictures of them rocking up on a Friday with their suitcases to claim their daily allowance when they've been the building half an hour to pictures of butter mountains and olive oil legs weren't enough for you there enough for me I think it's fundamentally corrupt to the point where they don't even know how corrupt they are.
Be circular cover to pointless you don't agree with me and I don't agree with you so you're patronising sneering us doesn't make any difference to you all me so why do you feel the need to keep coming on this thread trying to bully forward your minority viewpoint?
Is it that in real life you're now out numbered despite the media bias towards remain despite the BBC biased towards remain you still feel the need to come and browbeat the majority who don't agree with you if you can't find it in yourself to actually think why people might have voted differently to you I believe that problems yours.
Look to your own behaviour silencing dissent never ends well

CardinalSin · 09/01/2018 18:44

"despite the BBC biased towards remain"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Inkanta · 09/01/2018 18:52

InfiniteSheldon - couldn't have said it better!

InfiniteSheldon · 09/01/2018 18:53

×these circular arguments

OliviaD68 · 09/01/2018 18:56

@InfiniteSheldon

I don't feel I'm in the minority. In fact I'm fairly confident I'm in the majority now.

My problem is OUR problem. The disaster that is about to hit us - the poor disproportionately - is a joint problem.

The EU is not a club. Leaving it is going to hurt badly for decades. There is no scenario that is possible that leads us to a different outcome.

And this is why I know I'm in the majority. Many Leavers now realise they have been duped and now regret. Just look at your first statements from earlier today. All factually incorrect. That doesn't matter?

And so ... Brexit isn't likely to happen. It will be stopped.

Inkanta · 09/01/2018 19:00

'Many Leavers now realise they have been duped and now regret.'

No they don't!

OliviaD68 · 09/01/2018 19:04

@Inkanta

I think you're speaking for yourself. Yes they do.

The facts are now coming out. People understand more about the consequences. And now see the misalignment relative to what they understood at the time.

And so the country is changing its mind. As a good democracy it will therefore change its mind on Brexit. Because it makes no sense ... to anyone. Including you. You just don't know it yet.

InfiniteSheldon · 09/01/2018 19:04

None of my statements were factually incorrect we just have a different opinion. I haven't met or heard from a single bona fide Leaver who has changed their mind so forgive me if I hold to a democratic vote and ignore your media driven hyperbolic nonsense. I also do not believe we will suffer financially in the long term and certainkly dont believe that faux concern for the poor who will benefit most by us escaping this rich mans trading cabal. Again my opinion there are no facts about future economics just opinions.

Inkanta · 09/01/2018 19:06

"Brexit isn't likey to happen. It will be stopped."

What!? Grin

Inkanta · 09/01/2018 19:08

"Because it makes no sense ... to anyone. Including you. You just don't know it yet."
Grin

OliviaD68 · 09/01/2018 19:10

Uh ... yes they were wrong. All of them. This is NOT a matter of opinion.

I'll remind you.

  1. Trade talks are NOT starting. These will ONLY start when we have left the EU.

  2. No passporting of bank licenses to EU member states because we are getting a Canada type FTA. So no services

  3. Blue passports ... Well it turns out they were actually black.

  4. Unemployment ticked back up last month. But Ok, I'll give you that one. However this is not necessarily a good sign. It might mean firms are struggling to find resources which - guess what - will impede future growth.

OliviaD68 · 09/01/2018 19:11

@Inkanta

Yep.

Not. Gonna. Happen.

Just watch the next few months.

InfiniteSheldon · 09/01/2018 19:14

If Bexit is stopped we should all be very worried. Our democracy may not be perfect but it's the best system I can imagine living under. We are incredibly privileged in this country with the power and choice we have over our daily lives. It's unprecedented in history and rare in this current global world we should treasure our democracy.

OliviaD68 · 09/01/2018 19:19

@InfiniteSheldon

I agree with you.

But democracy doesn't just exist on a single day, June 23, 2016. Democracy is a constant. And people have the right to change their minds in a democracy, especially if the facts change but even if they don't.

I would agree with you that it would be unacceptable to hold a second ref just because we didn't like the answer on the first.

But given so much has changed and people know so much more now, it makes sense to me to ask a second time whether the UK is sure it wants to leave. And this is where I'm confident the answer would be to Remain.

No one wants to be poorer as a result of vacuous objectives like sovereignty and freedom. No one expected to be poorer as a result. But this is what would have happened. Or still might if I'm wrong.

InfiniteSheldon · 09/01/2018 19:29

Unfortunately our democracy doesn't give do overs. It was a very clear cut question with over a million people more voting out than in. I can see you truly believe that a second referendum would get you the answer you want. I have to disagree it really wouldn't and it would be a death knell for democracy. We already struggle to get the under 25's to vote they will give up entirely of we make such a mockery of it.
