Westministenders: Money, money, money

The big developments are that the government have signalled they are prepared to pay more and to involve the ECJ when it comes to citizens rights on condition that we move to talk of trade. But no apparent progress on NI. Which is significant with Ireland threatening to veto.

The EU has not changed its stance at all. Since Day 1.

There is always a worrying omission and lack of commitment to retain the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The bonfire begins.

Talk is of Green still going in a reshuffle, possibly with Gove replacing him as Deputy PM.

Coalition talks in Germany have broken down, and the British have got excited about it, whilst the German response have largely been a slight shrug.

Its been a much quieter week, despite the budget. Thank goodness. There are lots of outstanding issues that are lurking in the background like the Green one though.

The main message coming from the budget, has not been any new policy, but the dreadful economic forecast for the next few years.

They are lucky, aren't they, that the Big Ben tower is out of commission for repairs? Maybe they should just be banged up in the Tower of London.

HashiAsLarry · 28/11/2017 14:43

How about hard labour in the Elizabeth Tower? Could save a few million.

Peregrina · 28/11/2017 14:44

Better still, send them fruit picking, to replace those E European labourers who haven't come this year.

OliviaD68 · 28/11/2017 14:48

@LurkingHusband

Yes. Meant for you.

So it seems removal and possibly jail time ...

That might focus the minds a bit.

TheElementsSong · 28/11/2017 15:01

The sheer breadth of the government's lies and their incompetent attempts to cover their tracks takes the breath away.

Still, I'm absolutely certain there will be ways in which our Brexiteer friends will be able to put a positive spin on it.

OliviaD68 · 28/11/2017 15:08

Just picked this up. Date is March 2017.

So this will help the UK's credibility. It's a sieve for Chinese goods FFS.

Sorry it is from Guido Fawkes.

Brian Cox: ‘I Want to Be Prime Minister’

Telly boffin Brian Cox revealed he wants to become Prime Minister as he hinted he could set up a political party and embark on a career at Westminster. On BBC Radio 2’s Chris Evans breakfast show, Professor Cox said: “I should just try and be Prime Minister, bring a bit of common sense… At the moment I dunno, and I’m not being party political, you can look across all parties and you think it’d be great if a scientist were just having a bit of clarity of thought, you know? Wouldn’t it?”

A listener texted in and suggested Brian’s party could be called “The Rational Front”…

Love the rational front. Also lover John Bercow. He is an excellent speaker.

Holliewantstobehot · 28/11/2017 15:39

Just to be clear John Bercow is not my lover, should have said love.

LurkingHusband · 28/11/2017 15:41

It's hard to imagine a better paradigm of the UKs problem with science and learning than the opening two words of that piece ...

Telly boffin.

Professor Brian Cox is a highly respected scientist, lecturer, (and broadcaster) - which would be the credentials he would bring to the table.

That said, it's immaterial, as we're not bug fans of common sense in UK politics. Dogma is the name of the game. Hence Brexit.

Dammit Hollie I thought we had some juicy gossip there 😂

OlennasWimple · 28/11/2017 16:22

Well, news just in is that Meghan is going to be baptised and confirmed before the wedding, which will be in Windsor Castle. The poor woman has her first official engagement on Friday...

OlennasWimple · 28/11/2017 16:25

Oh, cross post

OlennasWimple · 28/11/2017 16:26

Mother - I guess it keeps things simple (and in theory keeps any children they have in the line of succession, even though they are being pushed down even further with HRH Baby 3 due next year)

I thought that the legislation just allowed the monarch to marry a Catholic, it didn't change the position that a monarch themselves cannot be Catholic?

Is Meghan actually Catholic, though, or did she just go to a Catholic school? She obviously isn't Anglican (being an American), which is what is being "fixed" with a baptism and confirmation in the next few months

(Actually, I think this is all relevant to Brexit - I'm reading a great book on the women who made 16th century Europe, and the power play between the various countries is rather familiar to what we are going through at the moment, including the willy waving by the English....)

Peregrina · 28/11/2017 16:45

By the sound of it Meghan was never baptised - the various denominations do now recognise each other's baptisms. They can sometimes do sort of 'provisional' baptism for adults, I am not sure of the correct term, if it can't be established whether a person was baptised or not as a child. For an adult, the real deal is the confirmation.

RhiannonOHara · 28/11/2017 16:46

Olennas, not to hi-jack, but what's the book? Sounds fascinating.

Doesn't the C of E have overseas branches ? Wasn't this why female/gay priests was such an issue ?

(mutters separation of church and state)
