So in the spirit of sharing our deluded brexiteer cheerfulness, heres a round up of some of this weeks good news.

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-5040279/UK-exports-booming-outside-Europe.html

http://www.londonlovesbusiness.com/business-news/london-news/big-boost-world-bank-ranks-uk-seventh-in-its-doing-business-report/18554.article

https://global.handelsblatt.com/politics/world-trade-makes-a-comeback-845798/amp

https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-volkswagen/vw-explores-uk-banking-licence-ahead-of-brexit-idUKKBN1D22KR

The government have 'found' £60billion to put is a slush fund for brexit.

https://amp.ft.com/content/f3271ac7-7439-319f-ba90-9252f59aafee

And in the week that saw the interest rate rise, the Bank of England said gloomily "as migration tightens, we will see wage growth". Note the 'we will'. Smile

Excellent. All this whilst the media obsess over impotent politicians as Britain works.

Rumour has it, some remainers are a little glum.....

Only because I mentioned it earlier, anticipating a few chuckles, heres my notes from todays Select Committee questioning the BBC. (No direct question about bias/programme content whatsoever...but some bits didnt disappoint!)

I deserve a medal, I sat through it!

Keynotes....of note. (Though most of it wasnt)

Q. What work is the BBC doing to monitor audience reaction and feedback? Have you commisioned any studies?
A. No. Nothing. But we're employing a new bloke who will have a title of 'Director' and we'll ask him about this. (Sorry, could be a 'her'..... NOT!)

Q. But you have 5 staff members already who have a title of 'Director' in marketing etc earning over £150k pa, surely theyd oversee regular studies and analysis of audience responses to programming?
A. We need another one. Were employing a bloke ........

Q. I tried to find how to contact a board member, and I couldnt find any contact details online etc. How do I contact a board member?
A. Write to Broadcasting House

Q. Do you have an email? Like chairman@bbc ?
A Write to Broadcasting House

Q. I also tried to access the complaints procedure. Its not clear. Do you have one?
A. If you write to Broadcasting House with a complaint, we'll tell you what the procedure is when we reply.

Q Well how about staff complaints?
A. Yes we have those. (Indeed theres a bit of a spike at the moment)

Q. Licence fee. (Various levels of confusion here from the committee members) So we have vans that drive round enforcing household licence fee evasion? Online you enforce as an individual? Would a PIN sent with a licence resolve this?
A. The vans stay. PINs too hard and wouldnt apply to free to air service (very good point I thought)

Q. But I have 2 licences, at 2 addresses, though I can only watch one set in one house at one time, and I have to register for online viewing too. Are you chasing individuals, or households?

A. Everyone. Every property. Everywhere.

Q. Theres been a few complaints about licence enforcement? Whys it so hard?
A. Were employing a bloke ........'director'.... He can look at this.

Q. Will you be means testing the over 75's?
A. Ooooh, good idea. We'll ask new bloke to look at that....

Q. BBC productions are eligible for tax credits, are they not. Does that mean that production is funded by the tax payer as well as the licence fee payers?
A. Yep.

Q. This years pay disclosures. Jeremy Vine for example, earned £80k for 1 nights work on the scottish referendum. As that would take an average worker, 3 years to earn, do you think its proportionate?
A. We're very sumpathetic to those earning average wage.

Q. Is it proportionate?
A. No one at the BBC is overpaid.

Q. Do you have a policy regards paying talent through Personal Service Companies vs PAYE?
A. We use HMRC rules.

Q. But do you have a policy?
A. No.

Q. Scotland. Youre launching a new Scottish channel?
A. Yes. BBC Scotland isnt scottish enough.

Q. Whats the budget for this new channel?
A. 30 million (side note: Total BBC revenue this year, £5,000million)

Q. What are you going to deliver for 30 million?
A. No idea.

Q. Well its not a lot in terms of 'new channel' costs. Is it going to be shit?
A. Thats for the new bloke we're going to hire......etc etc

Q. Are you going to move any back office/support services up to Scotland, like you moved finance to Cardiff?
A. No. But HR is in Birmingham

Q. Radio salaries. Are they proportionate in what is a far smaller market?
A. Dont know. No idea what radio people should be paid.

Chair speaks to camera on live feed "If there are any commercial radio presenters out there earning more than £150k pa, could you please write to us at the Select committee " (Genuinely, he did that. LOL!!!!)

Q. BBC World Service showed a growth of 3% last year, but this was down to the currency fluctuations due to Brexit. Without that, it would have made a loss?
A. Yep, that was good news.

Here end the committee.

And a little more cheery stuff......

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2017/11/06/uk-businesses-flourishing-despite-brexit-uncertainty/amp/

http://www.londonstockexchange.com/exchange/prices-and-markets/stocks/indices/summary/summary-indices.html?index=UKX

Government published their technical note on EU citizens today, as well as their Trade Bill. (Customs Bill next week) Good sound stuff, this juggernaut is starting to move. But I was thrilled when I saw David Davis' cheery face grinning at me! Hadnt realised just how cheery he is! Couldnt you just pinch those cheeks Blush

Oh and Nadine Doris, after the Boris assault, was handed a classic..GrinGrinGrin

Just leaving this here:

Tony Benn -

When I saw how the European Union was developing, it was very obvious that what they had in mind was not democratic. I mean, in Britain you vote for the government and therefore the government has to listen to you, and if you don’t like it you can change it. But in Europe all the key positions are appointed, not elected – the Commission, for example. All appointed, not one of them elected.

[..] And my view about the European Union has always been not that I am hostile to foreigners, but that I am in favour of democracy. And I think out of this story we have to find an answer, because I certainly don’t want to live in hostility to the European Union but I think they are building an empire there and they want us to be a part of that empire, and I don’t want that.
Carolinesbeanies · 08/11/2017 02:31

and this is always worth a chuckle chinkchink, its JC back in 1996 thats so amusing. Pre Lisbon!

As Faith highlighted earlier.... truth will out indeed. Stay chipper Smile

Another excellent snippet from the Markus Krall speech that deserves reiterating when you hear Remainers perpetuating their myth that the UK needs the EU more than vice versa.

The EU-27 have a 120 BN Euro trade surplus with Great Britain, much of it coming from the bilateral trade between Germany and the UK, much of it easily substituted from other sources. When I attended a presentation of a Ministry of Finance official to the commission of the Economic council for the Financial Industry a few months ago this matter was brought up in the subsequent discussion. It very quickly resonated with the representatives of companies and banks that were present. However, before the number was thrown into the debate, 95% of the participants were unaware of it

I would be delighted if this means we will see far more Jaguars and Range Rovers on our roads (and on roads around the world) than Mercs and BMWs.

Bearbehind · 08/11/2017 06:42

Good to see Leavers continue to cling onto every scrap of what they see as good news and resolutely refusing to address the issues about how we can negiotitate a successful Brexit and deal with the repercussions of leaving.

Don't be surprised that there's no Remainer participation on here- it's pointless discussing this with people who refuse to even acknowledge the issues.

InfiniteSheldon · 08/11/2017 07:24

Glad Bear is here to tell us it's pointless Bear being here Grin

MelodyvonPeterswald · 08/11/2017 07:27

Thank you for joining Bearbehind

Perhaps you could share with us what makes you so happy about President Juncker and all that is perfect with EU?

Here's the perspective of an insider

The Euro has created huge trade imbalances inside the Eurozone. Goods and capital have been flowing from a super competitive Germany (for which the Euro is undervalued) to a decrepit “Club Med” (for which the Euro is overvalued). As a consequence, unsustainable levels of debt held by Germany through a variety of vehicles have been accumulated. At risk are bonds bought by German institutional investors (Euro 1.8 TRN), the ESM commitments as part of the “Euro-rescue” efforts (200 BN), and the Target-2 exposure. Target-2 is an overdraft loan the Bundesbank has handed out at zero interest, unlimited, unsecured, for indefinite time and without any control or discretion to the other central banks of the Euro system. As of September 2017 it added up to 850 BN Euro. I call this combined approximately 2.8 TRN Euro exposure my country is running the biggest hedge fund on the planet with one single bet, namely that the Euro will be saved

IFellDownAHole · 08/11/2017 07:30

I think you’re misunderstanding remainers opinions. I’m very pro remain and would be overjoyed if brexit is a success. Because, you know, I love in this country and have done all my life.

Why the hell do you think remainers would be glum at news of teeny, tiny glimmers of light?

Lasvegas · 08/11/2017 07:43

Thanks for the links Caroline. I am expecting the BBC next month to report that despite Brexit we are still celebrating Christmas!

MelodyvonPeterswald · 08/11/2017 07:55

IFellDown
Because all we heard from Remain (and continue to do so) was "Project We're All Dooooooomed, Dooooooooooomed I tell ye"

I have no doubt that there are some tough months ahead but we're leaving a failed project. The Germans are willing to acknowledge this. They are v pissed off that without us, there is really no-one else ready to pick up a decent share of the tab for the Bibulous Shenanigans of President Juncker.

Once the EU falls apart many countries from across Europe (which are run by people who can do basic arithmetic) might be interested in creating the conditions for genuine free trade while also respecting the right of sovereign states to remain independent.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 08/11/2017 08:10

IFellDown, there’s a few that are still glum though & ignore all and any positive messages (as evidenced by Bear).

This thread hopes to give them a bit of cheer.

Carolinesbeanies · 08/11/2017 11:01

"Glad Bear is here to tell us it's pointless Bear being here Grin"

GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

Hardly teeny tiny glimmers of light, theres lots to be very cheery about.

Economy. Tick. EU citizens rights in UK. Tick. Trade bill that works whether deal or no deal. Tick. Customs bill, due out next week that I anticipate works whether deal or no deal. Tick. (Yep, a UK VAT equivalent will stay resolving the one huge issue, IMO, regards the NI border. Tick.) Banking creating new jobs in europe (though sadly for Frankfurt not that many) to cover european sector, without losing UK jobs. Tick. UK banking recuitment up 17% this year. Tick. UK investment across the country up. Tick. Unemployment down. Tick. Anticipated wage growth announced by the Bank of England. Tick. Commercial deals in London going through the roof. Tick. Central Budget found for exit costs that wont impact domestic spending. Tick. Non EU partners very excited by prospects. Tick. Scotland gets a new very scottish BBC channel, paid for by BBC WS currency profits. Tick.

And thats only 9 months after issuing the A50 thats formally required, (and previously agreed by 27 EU nations as 2 years, and 2 years financial commitments). Tick.

What we're not doing is sitting around waiting for the EUs permission, as thats not required. They can mutter, and spin, and prevaricate, and scaremonger, and boast their own importance, and appeal to their 4 Presidents for guidance when they cant reach concensus, all they like. They can take 10 years if they like. How about 20? (Though German business is getting a tad twitchy about the EUs approach to their future trading relationship, being tied to the EUs famous '10 years to negotiate 5 paragraphs' track record and all that) .

Thats just how the EU works (or doesnt...work, that is).

Seek and ye shall find. The UK is cracking on. Tick. Smile

Hmm.

I am definitely interested in any glimmers of hope. I voted remain but I'm not dogmatic about it, like most people. I also have a life to lead and I want the future to be bright for myself, my kids, and all of us really. So I'd be super happy with a Brexit that did lead to a better country for us all. So I'm not petulantly ignoring good news. I also have to take into account the not so rosy reports, but really, how can we trust or believe anything right now?

One thing though. Yes, it is fine to say the EU are bullies, behaving like teenagers, so yah boo sucks to you we'll crash out.

Is there any indication that this wouldn't be a disaster for the economy and the country? Surely it's better to forge a consensus going forward and to smooth the transition away from the union?

I can't be overly positive as it's just a massive unknown, and in the meantime I need to move on with my life, plan for the future. Very hard to do that with alternating views of 'yay everything is going great' and 'Armageddon is just around the corner'.

Also as an aside, I'm really not sure how anyone could be positive with this shit show of a government dealing with things. If there was anyone who could make 'Brexit a success' I have little faith it's them (and no, I'm not sure the alternative is very much better...)

FridayThirteenth · 08/11/2017 11:08

I'm finding your 'ticks' a little premature Confused

Can you point me to an article about EU citizens rights in UK? I thought nothing had been agreed here?

Also you forgot about Northern Ireland

Carolinesbeanies · 08/11/2017 11:35

Oh and just in case this was missed, though I just fancy posting again

the 'glums' are certainly decreasing.....

Much to be cheery about indeed, even looking at this from a prozac consumption and GP appointments view point. This is what happens when the MSM get it so wrong, and prefer a political narrative, to a reality one.

Switch it of, go outside, and meet cheery people excited by the future.

Heres a few areas this week...

Carolinesbeanies · 08/11/2017 11:46

Sure Friday. Were very cheery in here. Smile

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/more-detail-provided-on-new-settled-status-for-eu-citizens

NI I did mention, though its a tad subtle, so Ill expand. The NI border Ive posted about at length elsewhere. Its not a 'people' problem, (see Vlad my wandering russian), its not a tariff problem, (see zero impact of Ireland currently having a 23% VAT rate whilst NI currently have 20% VAT rate. I can assure you, no bootlegging is currently bringing down the island over a 3% differance). IMO, it hangs on whether the UK kept VAT or not. (We technically can do away with VAT, its an EU directive, and every person in everyhousehold would be 20% better off on every purchase over night. Thats quite some grocery bill saving) A no -VAT situation in NI would be utterly unworkable with an invisible border.

As it stands, I believe next weeks Customs Bill will indeed confirm that a UK VAT equivalent will remain. More cheery news indeed regards the NI soft border.
