Brexit

Where do you realistically think we go from here?

So Amber Rudd says 'no deal is unthinkable' and David Davis says the opposite.

DD also says we'd only agree to a transition period if the terms of our deal were known before hand.

The EU are still insisting the 3 priorities are addressed before talks can move to trade so basically we're at a stand off.

Something has to give at some point.

Regardless of what you want to happen, what do you think will actually happen.

I think we will walk away from the talks, all hell will break loose when the repercussions of that come to the fore and we'll end up staying in the EU in some capacity but in a much weaker position than before.

I watched a documentary once on Britain during the 2nd world war. By the end of the war we were living in the closest thing to a socialist democracy ever experienced in this country. We went on to create the NHS. Lots of industry was nationalised at the time. This was the world the baby boomers were born into, many of whom had the opportunity to achieve and succeed. Of course life wasn't perfect and there was plenty of poverty which needed to be addressed but it goes to show that the country didn't collapse because we weren't arch capitalists. We moved on from victorian sink or swim social policy. It seems sad to me we are heading back towards that. I think a labour government would be good for this country, we need to address the inequality rife in our society. Its not good enough that so few people hold so much wealth.

Indeed Lewis : much of Corbyn's supposedly radical and rabidly left-wing manifesto it certainly seemed to have scared M4dad Wink would be deemed pretty mundane Centrist stuff on the continent Confused

State-owned railways, workers' representation on company boards, opposition to TTIP....

The Overton Window has shifted so far in the UK that we no longer have a clear or true understanding of what is "Left Wing" and what is "Right Wing" Sad

GhostofFrankGrimes · 19/10/2017 17:31

Sure, JC will turn the UK into a socialist and marxist hell hole. If he went down that path I'd leave, you fucking betcha.

Leavers tell us that the EU is a neo liberal nightmare driving British workers wages down. If leavers don't want capitalism or socialism what do they want?

Peregrina · 19/10/2017 17:31

Try this for a socialist manifesto.

The public liked what they read, because Labour was elected with a landslide.

sinceyouask · 19/10/2017 17:32

If Leavers knew what they wanted I suspect negotiations would be going far better than they are.

M4Dad · 19/10/2017 17:37

The thing about socialism is that it's fine until you run out of other people's money.

surferjet · 19/10/2017 17:43

You’re brave quoting Margaret Thatcher on here Grin

Once we've reclaimed "our" money from the EU how do you think it will be spent? Building hospitals to the tune of £350mil a week? Bit socialist innit?

You’re brave quoting Margaret Thatcher on here

Given Thatcher was pro EU I'm surprized you mention her name.

M4Dad · 19/10/2017 17:47

Ha ha.

I'd only quote her if she was correct. I'm not sure that most people know how socialism works.

Holliewantstobehot · 19/10/2017 17:47

But its all our money isn't it? We all pay VAT, tax etc; The tax burden would be more equally spread if we had better wage equality. The tax business pays on profits is money earned from all their workers hard work and all their customers. We all benefit from the NHS, education, roads to drive on, policing......the list is endless.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 19/10/2017 17:48

The late Lord Attlee was right when he said that the referendum was a device of dictators and demagogues.

Who said that? Grin

OK, a person has tried for 6 years as a dcotor, she now earns 60K a year. What right do you have to any of her money?

Why spend 6 years training when, in your world, she'd only earn a bit more than a Receptionist?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 19/10/2017 17:54

How do you propose roads are laid, hospitals are built, schools etc if taxes aren't raised?

Why spend 6 years training when, in your world, she'd only earn a bit more than a Receptionist?

I'd like to think people didn't join the medical profession solely for money. People are low pay are having their wages topped up by the state. This is sop to big businesses who should be paying a living wage. Lets help people at the bottom first.

M4Dad · 19/10/2017 17:56

One thing you can be certain of, if the Labour Party win the next General Election I will accept the democratic will of the people and not spend the next two years of my life whining about it.

NameChanger22 · 19/10/2017 17:58

Maybe we just need a system that's a bit fairer than it is. A million a day for kicking a ball around, while others are working themselves to death earning almost nothing - fuck that system.

Shame the Tories didn't accept the democratic will when they failed to turn up in parliament last night for the UC vote.

Footballers are to be treated as an asset. How much tax do you think someone earning £230,000 a week pays?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 19/10/2017 18:00

Ah Brexit, where rich leave campaigners pretend to give a shit about Brits on low wages but will refuse to remove an economic system that breeds poverty and inequality.

Holliewantstobehot · 19/10/2017 18:00

Because its an interesting job maybe? How would she do her job if there was no receptionist to book the appointments, no nurses to care for the patients, no cleaners to keep the hospital clean and prevent infection, no cooks to feed everyone, no record keeping, no porters to move essential equipment around the hospital, no tech guy to keep the electrical equipment running, no one to order the supplies a hospital needs? Of course a doctor would earn more than a receptionist, but they can't operate alone. (Pun intended).

Some executives are paid millions of pounds, while people in their corporation are on peanuts. I'm not saying everyone should earn the same but the ratio has got out of hand. Perhaps we could stop paying top up benefits to people if this was addressed and that money could be put to better use.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 19/10/2017 18:01

People are not assets.

Let's try and keep this sensible shall we?
