I'm no rtb but I'll give it a shot, though her efforts deserve much more than me.

The August negotiation round has, well, fizzled out in much the same way as any other. It's taken over a year to get to written position papers and there's still no clue as to a direction from the UK government.

Japan, meanwhile, is about to sign off on a deal with the EU. A deal we want to copy.

@faisalislam
^but if post brexit britain's trade deal with third biggest economy in world is to be based on Brussels' deal, what about rest? TTIP? Canada?
...when PM signs off statements like this on primacy of EU-third party deals, one wonders how temporary the temporary customs union will be^

The NHS is now launching a drive to recruit foreign GPs, like the ones that have left thanks to Brexit. It's a good job they'll be £350m a week better off now. Oh hang on...

Bigly I thought it was Mumsnet at its finest. Polite, respectful and part of our five a day. Grin

TheElementsSong · 01/09/2017 08:46

But it was probably the most wholesome method of frustrating a troublesome visitor I have ever seen.

Exactly! 🍆🌶🥒🥕🌽🥔 Grin

Because they weren't really interested in what we had to say, they wouldn't have known that we'd already had a discussion about the risk to our food supply and the need to become more self-sufficient Grin

BiglyBadgers · 01/09/2017 09:03

Fox is just pissed that he's been found out as utterly pointless and is trying to stay relevant.

Heard him on R4 this morning and he just sounded like he is desperately trying to jump on the "it's all the EUs fault!" bandwagon. They do all seem to be coming out in force now to lay the blame for any failure at the door of the mean and nasty EU. Hmm

If we did become more self-sufficient in food, it would be one of the few bonuses of Brexit. Ditto, if Nissan need to source parts in Britain instead of bringing them in, and a few more parts making factories start up.

That's all "if, if" though, isn't it? The planning needs to be underway now, not a vague idea for the future.

TheElementsSong · 01/09/2017 09:14

And of course that is true, but isn't that what we have at the moment?

Ah yes, but Sovereignty. And £350 million per week. And, of course, Immigration. (Sorry, scratch the last one, absolutely nobody voted on that basis.) So what we're saying is, we want the free trade, no tariffs, all the agencies to stay here, the security cooperation and data sharing, the EHIC, and continued influence of EU rules etc. Just without paying anything or Immigration and they should give it all to us, because we're British. If they don't, they're punishing and bullying us.

It's so simple really.

Beermat King (I've run out of placemats). I rarely seem to catch up to date on these threads, but I really appreciate them!

Theworldisfullofidiots · 01/09/2017 09:20

It was inevitable that Fox and Davis would start blaming the EU. Classic drama triangle. If only they could behave like adults....

AnnieKenney · 01/09/2017 09:28

veg talk is no substitute for debate

sulks at being too late with courgette recipes for courgette haters

PattyPenguin · 01/09/2017 09:28

Ditto, if Nissan need to source parts in Britain instead of bringing them in, and a few more parts making factories start up.

It'll cost us. Nissan wants the government to invest £100 million in developing the UK supply chain (figure as at Feb 2017) www.cityam.com/260045/nissan-asks-government-100m-supply-chain-fund-after-brexit

Probably needed, really, because as I've said before on these threads, I know someone who worked in automotive components in the UK for 20 years (well-regarded firm, not some twopenny-ha'penny outfit) and in all that time their products weren't good enough for Nissan or Honda.

theelements

Its going to be the fault of the EU and anyone who voted remain when all this goes tits up

On one of the other EU threads, one of the more vocal Leavers was linking to a report that Nissan was going to boost UK jobs by building / sourcing parts in the UK:

asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Nissan-bolstering-UK-production-as-split-with-EU-looms

But: a report in the Sunderland Chronicle says that the company has distanced itself from those claims and is still planning to reevaluate once the the Brexit deal is known:

TheNumberfaker · 01/09/2017 09:46

It can't go on for decades, April 2019 we're out.

TheElementsSong · 01/09/2017 09:50

It can't go on for decades, April 2019 we're out.

The blaming of the EU and Remoaners could go on indefinitely, though.

EternalOptimistToo · 01/09/2017 09:53

Ive worked in the automotive industry in the UK.
Both a supplier of Nissan and the likes and with some companies supplying parts to us (which werevthen assembled in our factory for big automotive suppliers)
Some companies are Shock.
I remember visiting a company manufacturing cases for gearboxes. The old fashion way, moving molten metal into a case by hand. I didn't even think this would still be allowed for H&S regulations.
I then had to explain to said customers how this was totally ok when they had visited a state of the art factory in Sweden (manufacturing similar parts...). How the quality control was great despite the lack of evidence of any control etc... (knowing they would be audited so you would think they all the paperwork sorted!)

It's not just an issue with investments. It's also an issue with the way people are working and a certain lack of rigour.

SapphireStrange · 01/09/2017 09:53

Placemat king on this one too.

TheNumberfaker · 01/09/2017 09:53

Blaming will go on forever, I agree.

Peregrina · 01/09/2017 10:00

Perhaps the Leavers want to go back to the crappy cars we used to have? Ones which didn't start in the winter, so you pulled out the choke, flooded the battery, had to go back inside and have another cup of tea, come out, try again, started, but now you are late for work, or the school run. Or going back even further to when cars had crank handles? Oh yes, I remember trying to crank start my first car, a Morris Minor. Ah those were the days!

borntobequiet · 01/09/2017 10:03

It's also an issue with the way people are working and a certain lack of rigour
Seems to permeate almost every facet of public and private institutional activity in the UK, unfortunately. What was that about poor productivity in this country?

woman12345 · 01/09/2017 10:06

I still don't think this is all about 'brexit', still, it's about seizing executive control. (like trump) They are testing how far they can go without anyone noticing, but brexit is an ideal fluff, on the back of 'nostalgia'.
