I'm no rtb but I'll give it a shot, though her efforts deserve much more than me.

The August negotiation round has, well, fizzled out in much the same way as any other. It's taken over a year to get to written position papers and there's still no clue as to a direction from the UK government.

Japan, meanwhile, is about to sign off on a deal with the EU. A deal we want to copy.

@faisalislam
^but if post brexit britain's trade deal with third biggest economy in world is to be based on Brussels' deal, what about rest? TTIP? Canada?
...when PM signs off statements like this on primacy of EU-third party deals, one wonders how temporary the temporary customs union will be^

The NHS is now launching a drive to recruit foreign GPs, like the ones that have left thanks to Brexit. It's a good job they'll be £350m a week better off now. Oh hang on...

Of course it's possible to level up non eu and level down eu (as in apply the controls we already have). Whether you'd want that to be equal is another question, but it would make you a lot more open.

I don't know that they are all that interested in keeping kudos with Universities. Not from what I have seen with a brain drain already underway.

God I'm depressed. I feel like we live in a small minded country led by not very bright people, with no empathy and not a vertebrae between them.

Though would prefer it if it was a parliamentary petition.

I'm guessing Pete doesn't have mouths to feed or is worrying about ever retiring.

It's called institutionalisation and looking after your mates. Self interest and never mixing with people who are not directly involved in decision making.

Sam Coates Times @ samcoatestimes
Exc: Boundary Review based on 600 MPs to be dropped; new boundary review based on 650 MPs now likely

Whoopee. (Said with zero enthusiasm).

RedToothBrush · 05/09/2017 23:35

Andrew Lilico @ andrewlilico
If the EU tries to force no deal, we shld be willing to go there. It'd be bad for both sides. The EU will not enjoy it one bit. C'est la vie

And there's the plan spelled out.

'The let's shoot ourselves in the face and see how other people like it' plan.

Ah, the case I was thinking of, did in fact have a British parent - who had left the country years ago, and the child in question had never lived her. It did make me wonder why someone in that position would want British citizenship.

Peregrina · 05/09/2017 23:56

Probably not, but would be able to withstand the fallout better.

RedToothBrush · 06/09/2017 00:11

Charlie Falconer @ LordCFalconer
Hammond told Tory MPs who might be thinking of seeking to amend the W/drawl Bill "now is not the time." There will never be another time.

Dicey says nobody has right to override leg of Parl.W/drawl Bill allows exec to do just that on more than technicalities. Dicey RIP.

Whatever country voted for in ref it wasn't to replace parliamentary sovereignty and rule of law with unrestrained rule of ministers.

Parl sovereignty means parl decides big changes to law not ministers, unrestrained by parliament. Sadly not hyperbole. Wish it was.

RedToothBrush · 06/09/2017 00:25

The Times seem to confirm my thoughts about that 'leaked' document:

Sam Coates Times @ samcoatestimes
We reveal how home office doc was written by officials answering directly to Theresa May - and A Rudd is attempting to water down proposals

Andras Forgcas W @ andraswf
I that supposed to be reassuring?Because it isn't.

Sam Coates Times @ samcoatestimes
No

'Leaked' my ass.

Deliberately released to the present Team Theresa.

RedToothBrush · 06/09/2017 00:34

Jonathan portes @ jdportes
As I said: document leak further maneoeuvre in ongoing battle between economy-focused Ministers & anti-immigration ones (including PM)

Sam Coates Times @ samcoatestimes
But how on earth - how on earth that just a month ago May could have thought this plan compatible with transition deal is beyond me

Jonathan portes @ jdportes
Agreed.

Paul Butcher @ Brexit butcher
Where r u getting this from? ("Proposals for a “stepping stone” temporary implementation period for “at least two years” after Brexit day.")

Jonathan portes @ jdportes
Because Sam & I think this is completely incompatible with SM-compatible transition. So either U-turn on this, or no SM transition.

Assumption here that May wants a transition deal. May does not want a transition deal though. Realise that and it makes sense.

UK government rules out joint authority in Northern Ireland
Statement rules out any move towards rule involving both London and Dublin administrations if talks in Belfast fail to restore power-sharing

The GFA is dead. This is, to all intents and purposes, an admission of that.

Peregrina · 06/09/2017 00:53

Is Theresa May making harsh immigration rules and ripping up the GFA deliberately, or is she just an incompetent, blundering around?

As far as the Immigration rules are concerned, yes, I think she dislikes foreigners, with the exception of extreme right wing Americans like Trump. GFA - she probably hasn't got a clue about.

RedToothBrush · 06/09/2017 00:56

She hasn't got a clue about the GFA. Nor does she want one. NI is British and she's a unionist.

That's all that needs to be understood here.

RedToothBrush · 06/09/2017 04:38

What we will get now is a half arsed piece of patronising shite from the home office

Which apparently isn't from the home office but the prime minister who seems to be still trying to run the home office too.

stv.tv/amp/1397143-snp-s-request-for-emergency-brexit-debate-rejected/
SNP's request for emergency Brexit debate rejected
The UK Government has not met with devolved administrations since February.

Devolution is dead. May wants it killed off completely.

Cailleach1 · 06/09/2017 06:45

I think one of the aims of the last election was to take out the SNP. A little of this was achieved. Still the largest mandate from Scotland, though.

I looked up the definition of 'blue skies' thinking. Not grounded in reality was part of he definition.

The bastard Cons are like bulls in a china shop.

HashiAsLarry · 06/09/2017 07:00

Re Northern Ireland and the GFA. How does TM deal with EU citizens being born every day on UK soil? Stop it from happening. Tearing up the GFA and to some extent the CTA suits her perfectly.

A bit cheeky, but if there's going to be a border in NI, I have a suggestion as to where to place it. Maybe roughly along this yellow blue divide Wink

buying Bunging 1.5billion to the DUP and to all intents and purpose bringing them into government while NI and Stormont not functioning politically. That shows May's care for the situation and her attitude. Rather like a colony with gov. overseers in place. I don't think they will give a hoot about the demographics, either. Now or in the future.

Cailleach1 · 06/09/2017 07:05

But you still have mixed populations. What about Belfast? Will that be like Kosovo?
