I'm no rtb but I'll give it a shot, though her efforts deserve much more than me.

The August negotiation round has, well, fizzled out in much the same way as any other. It's taken over a year to get to written position papers and there's still no clue as to a direction from the UK government.

Japan, meanwhile, is about to sign off on a deal with the EU. A deal we want to copy.

@faisalislam
^but if post brexit britain's trade deal with third biggest economy in world is to be based on Brussels' deal, what about rest? TTIP? Canada?
...when PM signs off statements like this on primacy of EU-third party deals, one wonders how temporary the temporary customs union will be^

The NHS is now launching a drive to recruit foreign GPs, like the ones that have left thanks to Brexit. It's a good job they'll be £350m a week better off now. Oh hang on...

Bear - I'm far from 'desperate' as you suggest. And certainly don't think it's going really really badly. As it is we are in a situation where the EU have drawn up a list of their wants with for instance the divorce bill and we are going through them one by one. What is there to say about that? We are perfectly within our rights to scrutinize everything. Why would you think leavers should be angry because they haven't got what they want? We haven't been told what the outcome of anything is yet. Can you tell me what it is you think we haven't got?

As for your second to last sentence! well I just don't get what you are on about.

SwedishEdith · 04/09/2017 21:39

I just googled the Richard North blog for the JDD/martial law comments. I think it's this post - I remember reading it a few months ago.

DD did not say we would be looking at a Norway deal at all. In fact the opposite. He was answering a question from the Iceland ambassador about joining efta/ EEA on a temp. basis as a possible transition after Brexit. DD said it had been looked at but dismissed as it wouldn't save any time. SO the idea that the Gov. is sliding towards that option is entirely wrong.

Surely the conclusion to draw from that remark was that time is a crucial factor here because a cliff edge is going to be a disaster, and not that an EFTA/EEA deal (with the ££££££ that that would involve) is not being contemplated?

Why else would DD&Co want to hold talks more frequently, unless the UK is desperate to make a deal before the cliff edge dawns? Why else would DD&Co be so clearly eager to move on to trade talks before settling the questions that must be settled before trade talks can start (NI, status of EU and UK nationals, that bill, etc)?

Another resignation. Lord Price, a trade minister, quits.

Can you tell me what it is you think we haven't got?

Any sort of coherent plan.... Confused

Theworldisfullofidiots · 04/09/2017 22:23

The thought is she'll announce a softer brexit (?) but who knows?

Morgan Stanley are predicting her govt will collapse next year.
uk.businessinsider.com/morgan-stanley-may-government-to-collapse-in-2018-2017-9
Causing more turmoil and bringing the economy to a standstill. So if Brexit doesn't kill the economy the Tory party will. (Which was the conversation I had with my leave campaigning acquaintance before the Referendum, when I said Cameron would resign).

BiglyBadgers · 04/09/2017 22:30

This is a pretty long but detailed article on abuse suffered by women MPs on social media. It looks at the difference between different parties and highlights the issues caused by this level of constant abuse directed towards women who raise their voices, particularly if you are a black woman. I am still working my way through it, but wanted to share already.

Fun fact: "Diane Abbott alone received more abuse during the total period of analysis (1 January to 8 June) than all women MPs from the Conservative and Scottish National Parties combined." Shock

lalalonglegs · 04/09/2017 22:49

idiots - if TM is going to offer a softer Brexit why would she be whipping her MPs into supporting the Withdrawal from the EU Bill on Thursday with no amendments? I hope you're right but it makes no sense.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 04/09/2017 23:04

I agree it makes no sense but not much makes sense any more to me. It's one of the theories on twitter.

Eeeeeowwwfftz · 04/09/2017 23:08

It's so obviously going to be a non-announcement.

Eeeeeowwwfftz · 04/09/2017 23:11

Oh, it's a speech.

Politicians live in a very odd world in which they believe a single speech can change the entire world's perception of them.

Mistigri · 05/09/2017 04:54

Been AWOL ... has this been posted yet? Very perceptive from Faisal Islam, a consistently good journalist. Long but worth your time.

Bearbehind · 05/09/2017 06:21

Can you tell me what it is you think we haven't got?

We haven't got the faintest idea of how Brexit will look even at this stage. Every 'red line' had become decidedly grey and we're still persuing the 'cake and eat it' strategy even though it has been made abundantly clear that is not going to happen

As for your second to last sentence! well I just don't get what you are on about.

I was 'on about' your comments about house prices not crashing etc.

It's as if, because these things haven't happened, Brexit is going swimmingly- it's really not.

HesterThrale · 05/09/2017 06:39

That Morgan Stanley article is interesting because it suggests that it's just as likely to be Tory Brexiteers that rebel against the Govt on a deal, because it's not hardline enough. I've always assumed it'd be Tory Remainers that would rebel, but maybe May/Davis cannot construct a deal that will satisfy both sides of her party.

Even the smallest idea on how to solve the NI border situation, or even the vaguest idea of what we want at the end of it all.

Some nice graphs in here and I do like a nice graph Smile

Why ending freedom of movement could cost us all
Contrary to the popular myth, European workers aren't just baristas and fruit-pickers

Theworldisfullofidiots · 05/09/2017 08:31

FOM will cost us all in many ways.

Some business will fold as they will not have enough staff to fulfil orders.
We won't have enough young people to cope with our top heavy population (like the PIG countries). It's a complete mess.

BiglyBadgers · 05/09/2017 08:45

Hidden in this otherwise rather pointless article is this little nugget I thought you might be interested in:

At least half a dozen Conservative MPs are considering joining Labour, the SNP and Liberal Democrats and rebelling against the Government on a key part of the EU Withdrawal Bill.

SwedishEdith · 05/09/2017 09:03

I predict no Tories will rebel.

Peregrina · 05/09/2017 09:11

I would laugh hard and long if it was the hard right Tories who rebelled and managed to destroy the Tory party in the process, or at least kept them out of power for 20 or 30 years.

SwedishEdith · 05/09/2017 09:13

Me too. But it won't happen. Oh, except for Ken Clarke.

TheElementsSong · 05/09/2017 09:16

I predict no Tories will rebel.

I concur.
