Westministenders: No Brexit is Better than a Bad Brexit

Happy Anniversary!!!

These Threads are officially 1 year old today.

I don't know who started the very first thread, but it was about how Cameron quitting had handed the Boris a poison chalice because he had to be the one to trigger a50 as Cameron walked away without having done it.

Of course Boris didn't become PM, and we found out that triggering a50 and Brexit were even more complex than even the majority of the most informed thought it would be.

A year on we have a minority government, a zombie prime minister, a government who don't really know what the concept of democracy, millions of EU citizens (who include British nationals) who face an uncertain future, the fear of the cliff edge, a huge scandal over inequality and Jeremy Corbyn appearing on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury within the hour.

So a totally unnecessary GE has led to billions being paid to those that very few actually voted for.

I am extremely displeased. So much for "There is no Magic Money Tree" Hmm

But, I suppose, those who support Brexit will say it is all worth every penny (and they never believed in dinosaurs anyway, just as they never wanted £350 million for the NHS and other convenient re-writings of history). What price Freedom/Sovereignty/Control and all that jizz jazz.

I like rain. What's wrong with rain?

My indigenous colouring is non-compatible with 30 degree plus dry summers.

I love Manchester

I am bloody furious about that cash to the DUP. My council is having to cut well over £100 million over the next couple of years on top of previous savings of £350mill. This will mean real cuts in services. It will mean sick and vulnerable people will no longer get care. It will mean libraries closing. It will mean reducing social care for vulnerable children. It has meant friends and colleagues losing jobs they have dedicated their lives to in order to provide public services to people who need them.

I always knew that 'austerity' was ideological rather than essential, but to have it rubbed in our faces by the sudden magical appearance of up to £2billion just to get the DUP to prop up a zombie Government is enough to make me cry to be frank.

The Tories are absolute fuckers, they really are Angry

Lh I'm just describing how it used to be in Germany and probably in most other E27 countries

TM won't want any nasty, cheap foreign ID card system.

She will want a shiny, expensive red white and blue system (provided by Capita).

Ever heard of Nimrod ?

"For now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring" (seems appropriate to quote the Bars, prove my patriotism even though I'm currently a bit of a citizen of nowhere Wink)

Rain is good, particularly if you are a riot police officer as there's a wide-spread belief that it keeps civil unrest at bay

Cailleach1 · 26/06/2017 18:45

I think the 'confidence and supply' has given wind to the DUP's sails that nothing has changed, a la May. Even Ian Paisley jr saying 'the future is orange'. The representation at the moment represents the demographics. However, boundary changes (if brought in) will reflect more the changing demographics. Possibly a reason for influence to be brought to bear on stalling any implementation. Interesting little article. The Palestinian and Israeli flag business is just bizarre. It doesn't even represent the situation. I know the occupy and occupied business, but the Unionists weren't returning to a historic biblical homeland. Quite the opposite.

The DUP Has Controversially Secured Preferential Treatment For British Soldiers
The military covenant entitles former Army personnel and their families priority access to health care, but some feel it could breach equality legislation by giving Protestants an unfair advantage.

Extra money to health and education. And ex-servicemen get first dibs...

I'm not sure the representation at the moment reflects the demographics.

Maybe it does in certain voting age groups, but that is very much changing.

"The only way for 'EU Settled Status" to be secure is to take British citizenship. Ignoring the issues with passing the exam, in some cases e.g. Germany, taking British citizenship means giving up German citizenship. This is a huge deal psychologically (becoming a national of a country that doesn't want them) and also means giving up FoM throughout the EU. "

Shouldn't part of this E27 /UK deal include the right to hold two passports e.g. German / British once the UK Brexit?

I have just spent £1200 on the citizenship application and would be absolutely gutted if i or my dc would wouldn't be able to freely choose where to be at home.

sodablackcurrant · 26/06/2017 19:09

Keep an eye on NI.

The assembly has collapsed because of a scandal involving Arlene Foster, but she refused to back down. Brazened it out, but left NI with no Assembly.

Now she can cock a snook at everyone else in the Assembly by saying look what I got. Feck the lot of ya. Ha Ha, you couldn't get rid of me, oh no.

It could be like a red rag to a bull in certain quarters. It is a tinderbox. I'm telling you.

Cailleach1 · 26/06/2017 19:11

"The DUP has accepted that the British government will be impartial according to GFA principles for the Stormont talks and subsequently, despite the deal stating that the Conservative party “ can never be neutral” on the Union. "

Germans can (I think only since 2015?) take dual citizenship with any other EU state. But actually, if you qualify under certain conditions the German government will grant dual citizenship exemptions for most countries. The forms are complicated and the process takes about 9 months when we looked at it a few years ago, but basically you basically have to prove hardship if it is denied. On that basis, I guess all German citizens will be permitted to (still) acquire dual German-UK citizenship in a post-Brexit world i.e. one UK is no longer an EU state.

And I agree completely, it should definitely be written into the agreement - both ways - and is particularly relevant for the expats in Spain.

Cailleach1 · 26/06/2017 19:22

It is a wrecking ball gov't. Bish, bash, bosh at carefully forged peace. At everything really. They could not go down much lower in my estimation. Things now coming out of the woodwork. More ugliness showing it's face in society at large. No wonder Welby felt moved to come out.

David Davis: "It's not an ID card. What we're talking about here is documentation to prove you've got a right to a job, right to residence"
So is he talking about some sort of Green Card??

pointythings · 26/06/2017 19:28

My problem is that the Netherlands WILL NOT allow a Dutch national to take on another nationality and keep their Dutch citizenship. It's a horribly backward polder type attitude. It makes me a little less happy to be Dutch knowing successive governments have kept this parochial restriction on the statute books.

I shudder to think how bad things would have been if they had won a large majority. Angry

Golondrina · 26/06/2017 19:51

Same as in Spain, pointy. To remain European (I'm British) and maintain my current rights in Spain, I'm taking Spanish nationality, but I can't keep British nationality or be a dual national. Makes it that bit more daunting a step to take.

RedPeppers · 26/06/2017 19:55

Which also shows how stupid comments were just after the referendum
Why are you moaning you might not be able to stay here? You should have taken the British citizenship. It's just a bit of paper. AngryAngry
