Westministenders: No Brexit is Better than a Bad Brexit

Happy Anniversary!!!

These Threads are officially 1 year old today.

I don't know who started the very first thread, but it was about how Cameron quitting had handed the Boris a poison chalice because he had to be the one to trigger a50 as Cameron walked away without having done it.

Of course Boris didn't become PM, and we found out that triggering a50 and Brexit were even more complex than even the majority of the most informed thought it would be.

A year on we have a minority government, a zombie prime minister, a government who don't really know what the concept of democracy, millions of EU citizens (who include British nationals) who face an uncertain future, the fear of the cliff edge, a huge scandal over inequality and Jeremy Corbyn appearing on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury within the hour.

Theresa May says we are going to make Brexit a success for everyone.

The problem here is:

  1. Theresa May says a lot of things
  2. Theresa May is full of shit.

But, carry on as you were.

Breaking: DUP deal done - Theresa May and Arlene Foster sign a £1bn confidence and supply agreement in No10.

Apparently the triple lock and the winter fuels allowance also stay.

Arlene grew a money tree!

DUP deal done apparently. Triple Pension lock to remain and winter fuel payment to remain. Minister of DWP says its unsustainable. (There IS a magic money tree). TV now off grrrr! So someone keep me informed. Meanwhile bags packed going home today! Yay!

This DUP deal will be unpopular in the rest of the UK - and not really solve the problem. Still only needs a few Tory rebels for chaos.

Alex Wickham‏*@WikiGuido*

Quite a few Tory MPs had hoped DUP talks would collapse - consider it panicked, unnecessary and damaging

Parliament's summer holiday could be extended 'to stop MPs plotting coup against Theresa May'
Disgruntled MPs 'less likely to oust Prime Minister during recess'

Three months? Why not just make it twelve months long?

Ffs, are we to be at the mercy of their internal party conflicts ad infinitum then? It's not like there's a hugely complex Brexit situation to manage or anything.

The DUP deal.

Its three pages long. And says nothing about money.

Lets hope this is not what they think counts as transparency over the deal.

Nothing for Scotland and Wales. They won't be happy at all. I'm not happy either one and a half billion? My goodness May will stop at nothing to remain a zombie PM.

UK Government financial support for Northern Ireland:

www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/621797/UK_Govt__financial_support_for_Northern_Ireland.pdf

£200m per year for two years for infrastructure development
£75m per year for two years for ultra fast broadband
Talk of Devolution of Corporation tax rates - options developed for Autumn Budget 2017
A number of Enterprise Zones
£20m per year for 5 years to target areas of severe deprivation
£50m per year for 2 years for health and education for immediate pressures
£100m per year for 2 years to support NI Executive's health service transformation.
£10m per year for 5 years for mental health

Plus this which I'm not sure what it really means but think it might be potentially controversial.

The UK Government will work with the Executive and all parties to seek the implementation of the legacy bodies in the Stormont House Agreement, to provide better outcomes for victims and survivors. The next phase is a public consultation on implementation of the Stormont House Agreement legacy bodies. These are to be established so as to operate in ways that are fair, balanced and proportionate and which do not unfairly focus on former members of the armed forces or police. Both parties reiterate their admiration for the courage and sacrifice of the police and armed forces in upholding democracy and the rule of law and will never forget the debt of gratitude that we owe them.

Peregrina · 26/06/2017 12:05

Don't forget that Major was elected with a majority but by the end of his term had lost the majority due to deaths and defections. At the moment the Tories are holding together, but as soon as they sense what they see as a credible opposition, some of them will be off.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 26/06/2017 12:08

There went the GFA then Angry

LurkingHusband · 26/06/2017 12:08

Here's hoping the Scottish tory mps vote against them all over the place.

Not being Scottish, I have no idea how the internal politics work. But I would be curious to know what would happen if an area which returned a Tory MP started getting the impression that they were being shafted by the Tories ? Could it trigger a backlash support for the SNP ? So Scottish Tories have extra incentive to ensure things are "fair" ?

We still haven't had an official answer as to what the state of play with Tory+DUP and GFA is, have we ?

Peregrina · 26/06/2017 12:13

I predict trouble from Scotland and Wales who will also want the same cash bribes, but of course, can't offer the same leverage.

As for the piece in Italics - I can't see Sinn Fein accepting this. A part of me wishes that they would take their seats in Westminster just to thwart this.
