Brexit

Petition to rescind Article 50

Etaina · 19/06/2017 14:26

Just got an email from Avaaz with a link to a petition:

secure.avaaz.org/campaign/en/no_deal_no_brexit_loc/?cNWBamb

"The government called an election to get a massive mandate for hard Brexit, but instead, it lost its majority. Now, as the French and German governments have confirmed that the UK can reverse Article 50, and it becomes clear that a ‘no deal’ Brexit would have devastating consequences for Britain, we call on you to commit to rescinding Article 50 if we fail to reach a deal with Europe."

I know a lot of people, including DF, who voted for Brexit but now regret that decision. Even the most positive amongst them say that they wish we could just stop the madness now.

No they do not. No it is not

Lindy2 · 20/06/2017 13:26

That's up to you Ever but I think if the opposite bias was used with a wording of:

  • do you want the UK to be free to be able to negotiate favourable global trade deals?
  • do you want the UK to not be allowed to negotiate favourable global trade deals?
A different result would be likely wouldn't it? They may be reputable but that doesn't guarantee every survey they do is. I can't find any details of the number of respondents either.
Clalpolly · 20/06/2017 13:37

Don't I care about the people left behind? I did. But turns out they don't care much about me.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 13:42

Clal I'm sorry you feel like that. A lot of my friends and family voted that way but I don't hold a grudge

Am serious about Irish PP tho. If your DD is getting it through a GO rather than parent it takes 6 months to get citizenship and then 2 months to get PP

I have a feeling Ireland may change the rules for grandchildren soon as the diaspora is so large

CrossWordSalad · 20/06/2017 13:43

That Independent article says 53% in favour of second referendum 47% against, so no don't knows. Sounds unlikely.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 13:43

Sorry grand parent

Clalpolly · 20/06/2017 13:43

My mum is Irish.

Clalpolly · 20/06/2017 13:47

Ever, if you care so much about people who voted Leave why do you want to overturn their democratic rights?

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 13:49

Sorry to derail. So you need to apply for your DD to go on the Foreign Births Register. I'd do it asap if you can. Once she is registered (6months) you can apply for the PP

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 13:50

I can't overturn democratic rights with a democratic vote can I?

Odd you say that

Clalpolly · 20/06/2017 13:53

Ever, sibling who needs EU citizenship for business is already on it. Thanks, though.
The referendum wasn't a first bash until I get the answer we want. Leavers won in a democratic vote.
That is that. It really is and no amount of handwringing will change it.
We harry them and make them justify every step. We remind them if the stupidity of the £350 mill/ week nonsense. But it is over.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 13:57

I disagree. Maybe there will be another referendum maybe there won't

But sitting doing nothing doesn't help. Nor does running away. I am actually getting a third passport too btw as want as many options as possible for me and fam. We can do that but I would have people left behind. And the people I know are really not well off at all.

Besides that I love my country Sad

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 14:00

And a democratic vote can be overturned by another democratic vote

If nothing else we the people should have a right to vote on the deal.

Clalpolly · 20/06/2017 14:03

It is a pipe dream that there will be another referendum not a "maybe".
Maybe we'll have a sunny August. Maybe the Queen will live to 100. Those are "maybe "s . Maybe there will be another referendum? No chance. What would it say? The letter has gone, we are starting negotiations. We had a sweet deal. We won't get it back. Seriously, don't waste your time hoping for a reversal of this.

Etaina · 20/06/2017 14:04

CrossWord I agree that announcing that there would be a second referendum would very likely mean that we'd get the worst possible deal, which is pretty much what May said. I was left with the impression that the government is open to a second ref once a deal is agreed but can't say that for the reasons above. A part of me thinks that the EU will give us the worst possible deal anyway as a way of discouraging other countries from leaving in the future.

My concern is that the longer this drags on for, the worst the terms will be if we do decide to rescind Art 50. We would most certainly lose our rebate and would probably be forced to have the Euro and to pretty much put up with a lot of the other policies such as EU defence/army.

I don't think that a referendum on the deal itself is a pipe dream Clalpolly.

Like you Clal, I have a right to Irish Citizenship (Irish mother). I am also married to an EU citizen who couldn't vote in the ref but would've voted leave if he could have (he wouldn't do that now though). But we really don't want to leave the UK and I certainly don't want to uproot my family. I would also worry about my friends and family here. It doesn't seem right to just jump ship without a fight.

If the majority still believes that the best thing for this country would be to leave the EU, I would be more than happy to accept that. I really don't have an issue with it if that is what people want. My problem is that leavers are now telling me that with the developments since the referendum, they made the wrong decision and would vote differently if they had the chance again.

It could be, of course, that we manage to negotiate an acceptable deal and we'll all be happy, but I still think that any deal - good or bad - should be voted on.

The decision was too big to be put in a in/out lottery. We have elected representatives to make decisions on our behalf and most of them wanted to remain. Alas, we are leaving, the wheels are already coming off and Brexiteers gonna squirm.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 14:19

Clal I always have a plan b and c. But let's see what happens.

Clalpolly · 20/06/2017 14:20

My response to any Leaver who says they made the wrong decision is "Tough shit. You made this mess, we all have to live with it" and possibly "Now you know how I feel ". And to myself "what a fecking idiot".
The Lib Dems and the Greens were the only parties who had some vague idea about pretending it never happened. They got tanked at the election. You may know some Regrexit people but there is no appetite for it.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 14:25

Clal the election doesn't reflect the countries view on Brexit. It wasn't even discussed. It was a straight Con Lab contest. That argument has been used by Brexiteers but it has no traction

Labour campaigned on anti austerity. Con on strong and stable Hmm

GhostofFrankGrimes · 20/06/2017 14:27

I think most remainers are resigned to the economic suicide and what the future holds for both their families and the country.

Clalpolly · 20/06/2017 14:31

Ghost, I agree.
I fought. I lost. My family first now.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 14:41

I fought. Others were lied to. I will hold them to account. I'm not convinced this charade is over yet. We shall see.

And if it comes to I can get out. With my family. Never thought I would ever ever leave.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 20/06/2017 14:46

I'm glad people are waking up to how damaging this will be.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 15:11

I always knew. People have started complaining about the cost of holidays, food etc. This is just the beginning
