Brexit

Anybody else wish the EU referendum had never happened? Or Remain had won?

I feel like the country is in a fucking mess already and we haven't even started to leave yet. So much uncertainty.

I voted Remain though, I know this must be colouring my view. Any Leave voters wishing it had never happened or even that Remain had won? Are you still happy with how it's going? I'm fed up with it all but am really trying to see the other side. Not looking forward to yet another election which I fear may be just around the corner.

if you want people to elect you for a policy, you put it in your manifesto

Basically, one has to vote for a party's manifesto in its entirety and once your X is in the box, you should cease to hold an opinion on the individual policies?

So if you want an end to austerity particularly for the NHS, but actually rather approve of tuition fees, and want to Remain in the EU, what do you do?

If you would like to Remain in the EU, but you really like torturing foxes, what do you do?

If you think legalising cannabis is very sensible, but don't want a second referendum, what do you do?

Peregrina · 14/06/2017 11:42

Gisela Stuart is one who tried to make the 80% claim. Gisela Stuart who was Chair of the official leave party who made the assumption that the rights of EU citizens would be protected, but then went might quiet when nothing was happening on this front leaving many people and families in limbo. Then did not fight the election. Where was the courage of her convictions?

CrossWordSalad · 14/06/2017 11:48

I'm agreeing with you Cross - you're saying that any vote for either Labour or Conservative is a vote for Brexit are you not?

It was either a vote on the basis that Brexit was already decided (so not for or against but agreeing to go ahead with it as already voted on at the referendum) or it was a vote for what was in the Tory and Labour manifestos - Brexit, leaving the SM and ending FOM.

If Labour had wanted to stand on a no to Brexit manifesto, they could have done that.

I am really bemused by this all. If a vote for Labour was a vote aginst Brexit, please, please explain to my little confused mind why it didn't say that in their manifesto?

All this "reinterpretation" of votes after the election is just a way for trying to remove power from individual voters.

Peregrina · 14/06/2017 11:50

All this "reinterpretation" of votes after the election is just a way for trying to remove power from individual voters.

You are not alone in that opinion.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 14/06/2017 11:51

If you voted for Anna Soubry, you voted for Hard Brexit. If you voted for Stella Creasy you voted for Brexit.
This is 'democracy' apparently and anyone who says otherwise is terrifying.

Well, what you certainly don't do is say "The Tories included a commitment to bring back fox hunting so that means that a vote for the Tories is a vote to keep it banned" which is the analogy here.

In my opinion, you vote according to which policies you think are most important at that time. I'm not quite sure what you are suggesting as an alternative to parliamentary democracy. Just count the votes and then ask Elements to reinterpret what people really meant?

TheElementsSong · 14/06/2017 11:57

You're interpreting it just fine, Cross no need to get all grumpy at me personally!

From now on let it be set in stone that any vote for any Labour or Conservative MP is a vote for Hard Brexit and anybody who says otherwise is a traitorremoanersaboteurenemyofthepeoplehaterofdemocracy.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 14/06/2017 12:50

Thank fuck i voted lib dem

I dont care about a 2nd referendum, i just didn't want to vote tory

But thank fuck i did

Cos if i had voted labour or tory in my obviously naive view that it wasnt a fucking referendum rerun....i would be beyond furious now

With dozy twats of every persuasion trying to say that i had now changed my mind and was voting brexit

Peregrina · 14/06/2017 12:53

Thank fuck i voted lib dem
Exactly how I feel. I know that I voted for an end to austerity and to stay in the EU. I don't have any protesting against 'the will of the people' - that's democracy.

Peregrina · 14/06/2017 12:55

'problem protesting' that should say.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 14/06/2017 13:19

Oh and while i am having a rant

Some people on here need to grow the fuck up

It is not labours fault that the tories were not as successful as they needed to be

It is not labours fault that the tories are planning a coalition of chaos with a group with terrorist links

If the government decides to stay in the customs union or keeps FOM...that will also not be the fault of labour, lib dems or remain voters

It will be the fault of the government

If anything goes wrong with the government ...it will be the governments fault

Anyone who struggles with this concept is obviously either 4 or thinks like a four year old

If little tommy is being told off he cannot say that Amanda made him do it

Thats not how life for grownups works

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 14/06/2017 13:20

And if you are 4?

Put the machine down sweetie and go find mummy or daddy

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 14/06/2017 13:21

And i am so annoyed that i went and posted this on the wrong thread

Blush
CrossWordSalad · 14/06/2017 13:24

Well aren't you lovely rufus ?

Anyone, I've had enough of trying to have a discussion with people who keep having a go at me for things I haven't said. It's a futile exercise. I will leave you to it.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 14/06/2017 13:26

cross I wasnt aiming that at you

At all

You haven't been saying that

You have been saying that some politicians have been saying that

It was directed at mumsnet in general

If i was directing it at you i would have said your name

Thanks apologies if you think it was aimed at you

Itinerary · 14/06/2017 13:31

I still think we're doing the right thing in leaving the EU. No regrets here at all. There were long and interesting debates on the EU boards before the referendum, and I haven't changed my mind.

roseTablewood · 14/06/2017 13:31

Remain vote very unhappy and the government is a shambles. It's getting from bad to worse and we haven't even brexited yet. Envy

roseTablewood · 14/06/2017 13:33

I agree with you Rufus.

Utterly disgusted at the Tories and how they are fucking us all up. Bastards.

citroenpresse · 14/06/2017 13:41

itinerary Given that we ARE leaving the EU, does the sheer incompetence of the current negotiation team (half sacked) not worry you just a little bit? That the current white paper (leaving the Single Market) that the Government proposed looks nothing like what we will eventually end up with? That A50 was triggered and utter chaos has ensued? Are you 100% certain that 'the will of the people' is still 'the will of the people' when the government lied?

lordashcroftpolls.com/2017/06/result-happen-post-vote-survey/

Only 28% of those who voted across the UK are ‘resistant’ to Brexit, with 49% enthusiastic about the UK’s EU exit and a further 22% accepting of the result, with no desire to roll the clocks back and attempt to hold up the process up any longer

Seven in ten Conservative voters said they wanted Brexit to happen as soon as possible. Only 33% of Labour voters said the same; 43% said they would still like to prevent Brexit from happening if possible, as did more than half (56%) of Liberal Democrat voters

Anybody else wish the EU referendum had never happened? Or Remain had won?
Peregrina · 14/06/2017 15:46

Do we trust Lord Ashcroft's polls? How did he do with prediction the GE?

The Tories and Theresa May have been messing around for almost a year now, and I am perfectly happy to sit back and let them carry on messing around. They can't say they had much opposition from Parliament, and they don't care about us plebs, even if we don't agree with them. Now they have just squandered nearly seven weeks more but no one asked them to call an election.

citroenpresse · 14/06/2017 16:36

Peregrina rubbish. 52-96 majority based on turnout. Final Survation poll had 1pt Con lead, SurveyMoney 4pt, YouGov also 4pt AND also predicted closeness in seats like Kensington and Canterbury so their new post-2015 model seems to be working.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 14/06/2017 23:07

cross and peregrina

With that poll and many others i think it can depend on how the questions are asked

So if i was asked 'am i resistant to brexit and trying to stop it' or 'accepting of the result and not wanting to delay it any further'

I would probably answer the latter, even though i am not happy now and i would be prefer if it wasnt happening (although I appreciate all hell would break loose)

If you asked me if the referendum was rerun would i answer 'yes leave'or 'no stay'

Then i would answer no

SwedishEdith · 14/06/2017 23:29

Here's the counter to that Ashcroft interpretation.
