Westministenders: Election Mayhem

Tick tock, tick tock goes the Brexit Clock.

Don’t panic, just don’t turn up to debates because you have talks starting on the 19th June and have to perfect the 100 page document relating to at least 750 international agreements that need renegotiating before then. Anyone who turns up for their job interview for that, is just wasting time.

If only someone hadn’t called a distracting election.

This election was dubbed to be about Brexit. Yet it is remarkable that we have barely had debate over it. No one wants to admit it really. We nearly got a consensus between Barry Gardiner, Nick Clegg and David Davis over it being a political not economic decision on Question Time on Thursday 1st June, but we are not quite there yet with the admission that the economy is toast. This means the addition money the Conservatives have promised for the NHS won’t be available but we can’t have this discussion. Its properly the fault of purdah. Instead the subject rapidly got skipped over. Instead Davis said that the target May had just set for immigration to be at tens of thousands by 2022 was unrealistic.

In post-election rumour has it that Davis is about to get a promotion to the FCO, whilst Johnson gets the boot. On the other hand Gove is also rumoured for NI and May loyal Gummer gets Brexit.

Meanwhile the 1922 Committee of Tory Backbenchers are said to be plotting the downfall of at least one of May’s guard dogs, Nick Timothy following the decision about the Dementia Tax and subsequent U-Turn. Farage also mentioned Timothy in his statement over the breaking news that the CPS are pressing charges on the Conservative Candidate for South Thanet (the former MP there), his agent and a Tory Party official over election expenses. It seems almost inconceivable that Timothy can survive a traditional Tory Knifing.

This is all as May’s leadership approval ratings are in freefall as the honeymoon is firmly ends, after the public finally got to see her create an army of strawmen as answers, in a barely concealed contempt for the public’s concerns. May’s reaction to a negative reaction? Go back into hiding from media accountability and get the Mail to do her dirty work.

Elsewhere the EU have lined up to criticise Trump over his hard ball attempt to renegotiate the Paris Climate Deal. May was noticeable by her absence as she’s trying the same trick over Brexit and is desperate to keep Trump onside. What is Trump offering us in return? Apart from a Brexit Opportunity to get stiffed.

As for the polls? Despite them, it’s difficult to see the Tories not making a net seat gain. For Labour to do well it relies on widespread tactical voting, young who haven’t previously voted turning out in levels not seen since the 1970s and this being spread across the country and not concentrated in University areas. This will be tough to achieve to simply stop a Tory Landslide, never mind a hung parliament. Labour winning a majority is the stuff of pure fantasy (needs Lab to be 12points ahead of Cons). That said, if the result isn’t much different to the 2015 result, it will beg major questions over May’s leadership and her ability to read the public mood. It will say something about her refusal to engage with ‘the saboteurs’.

Expect an increased Tory Majority but not of the epic scale of 470 they originally were aiming for.

Theresa May should resign

This election gets weirder.

I don't disagree. She managed to side step away from controversies that would have destroyed previous Home Secretaries. She blamed civil servants on the Border Agency issues. That police cuts threaten to bite her hard during an unnecessary election campaign underlines her crap judgement.

I travelled through London yesterday and saw one policeman at KX. A big contrast to post 7/7.

Property provides 37% of Tory corporate donations

2 June 2017 | By Adam Branson

Property companies provided more than a third of the corporate donations made to the Conservative Party since the start of the year, research by Property Week has revealed.

An analysis of data published by the Electoral Commission covering the period from 1 January to 24 May found that property companies donated £1.4m, or 37%, of the £3.8m raised from companies.

Major donors to the Tories included housebuilder JS Bloor (Services), which provided donations totalling £520,000. Better-known property companies including Westfield Europe, Residential Land and Canary Wharf Group also made sizeable donations.

The contributions made to the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats were tiny by comparison. In total, property firms donated £86,120 to the Lib Dems and just £5,150 to Labour.

YY Figment
This needs to relate to some studies on children in the uk showing that muslims children are discriminated upon (Completely different study btw).

Im still [shok] at the idea that children less than 9 yo can be considered a threat.
I also read the list of signs to look for and tbh I could fit some of those quite easily (so those signs are far from being signs of just becoming radicalised. They can be signs of a lot of other issues going on. Incl under cover - or just plain - racism/xenophobia within the community). But Im not a muslim so no one will ever make a report on me.....

Armed police officer facts:
6976 in March 2010
5639 in March 2016
Since attacks in France, more funding reversed about half this decrease
So it is both true to say - they were cut by 1,300 under May at Home Office 2010-2016, AND that in current year numbers going up
Sources: Table 5.2 here
t.co/dYAz4WDk4X BUT no number Mar '17, tho we do have this from NPCC saying up 640
t.co/dGuhUvnFLs

Al Baker @ trifling gnome
Since the Gov't is now implying that more armed police don't reduce the threat, why slow the cuts after France? (possibly rhetorical Q).

So massive figure cherry picking going on and numbers still down on 2010 and the government's comments don't explain why there is effectively a u turn on armed police.

And this says nothing about community police.

Blue peppers - I work with 2 year olds and we have to be vigilant for signs of radicalisation.

I've argued with many local authority staff members, people delivering the PREVENT training and even an Ofsted inspector about how the guidelines are very woolly and are extremely light on specifics, apart from "watch out for those that might be displaying signs of radicalism" and none of them could give me any concrete examples of what we had to look out for that might ring alarm bells.

I have to say, it has not been well received by the early education sector in my area.

Red I don't blame farmers, when Leadsom is their best hope...

Leadsom commits to scrap ‘unnecessary’ red tape if re-elected
Philip Case
Tuesday 30 May 2017 6:00

Defra secretary Andrea Leadsom has promised to increase UK farm productivity and scrap “unnecessary” red tape for farmers, if the Conservatives are re-elected on 8 June.

Mrs Leadsom said Brexit would allow her party to translate the body of European law into domestic regulations so rules around the environment, food and farming “will be set in the UK”.

Writing on the Conservative Home website, she said: “Over time, that means we will be able to prioritise scrapping unnecessary burdens on farmers and ensure that our environment is enhanced by laws that focus on the needs of the UK, rather than 28 EU member countries.”

Citing Conservative election manifesto commitments to the food and farming, she said: “Our priorities are simple: to grow more, sell more and export more Great British food, and to be the first generation to leave our environment in a better state than we inherited it.”

Mrs Leadsom also repeated her party’s manifesto commitment to fund agriculture to the same level, if the Conservatives are re-elected.

Mixed reaction

The minister’s comments drew a mixed reaction from Conservative Home readers.

Victor Southern said: “Good to hear from this minister after months of silence.”

But blogger “BrianH13” branded Mrs Leadsom’s pledges as a “massive self-contradiction”.

He said: “Unfortunately, to grow more needs more land put to agriculture and/or increasing intensity and yield, neither of which is conducive to improving the environment.”

I was speaking to a forensics guy recently. He said that their on call shifts (extra to 'normal' shifts) have meant they've changed from maybe having to go out rarely to being out for a minimum of 4 out of 6 hours per shift. On top of their normal work.

Our emergency services should never have been seen as a luxury to cull.

Theresa May is just doing a speech.

The comment is now (paraphrasing)
"Its about which leader and which team"

Remember when it was just all about Theresa? Its now about her team too.

Have we ever seen a PM eat humble pie during an election in this way before?
