Westministenders: Election Mayhem

Tick tock, tick tock goes the Brexit Clock.

Don’t panic, just don’t turn up to debates because you have talks starting on the 19th June and have to perfect the 100 page document relating to at least 750 international agreements that need renegotiating before then. Anyone who turns up for their job interview for that, is just wasting time.

If only someone hadn’t called a distracting election.

This election was dubbed to be about Brexit. Yet it is remarkable that we have barely had debate over it. No one wants to admit it really. We nearly got a consensus between Barry Gardiner, Nick Clegg and David Davis over it being a political not economic decision on Question Time on Thursday 1st June, but we are not quite there yet with the admission that the economy is toast. This means the addition money the Conservatives have promised for the NHS won’t be available but we can’t have this discussion. Its properly the fault of purdah. Instead the subject rapidly got skipped over. Instead Davis said that the target May had just set for immigration to be at tens of thousands by 2022 was unrealistic.

In post-election rumour has it that Davis is about to get a promotion to the FCO, whilst Johnson gets the boot. On the other hand Gove is also rumoured for NI and May loyal Gummer gets Brexit.

Meanwhile the 1922 Committee of Tory Backbenchers are said to be plotting the downfall of at least one of May’s guard dogs, Nick Timothy following the decision about the Dementia Tax and subsequent U-Turn. Farage also mentioned Timothy in his statement over the breaking news that the CPS are pressing charges on the Conservative Candidate for South Thanet (the former MP there), his agent and a Tory Party official over election expenses. It seems almost inconceivable that Timothy can survive a traditional Tory Knifing.

This is all as May’s leadership approval ratings are in freefall as the honeymoon is firmly ends, after the public finally got to see her create an army of strawmen as answers, in a barely concealed contempt for the public’s concerns. May’s reaction to a negative reaction? Go back into hiding from media accountability and get the Mail to do her dirty work.

Elsewhere the EU have lined up to criticise Trump over his hard ball attempt to renegotiate the Paris Climate Deal. May was noticeable by her absence as she’s trying the same trick over Brexit and is desperate to keep Trump onside. What is Trump offering us in return? Apart from a Brexit Opportunity to get stiffed.

As for the polls? Despite them, it’s difficult to see the Tories not making a net seat gain. For Labour to do well it relies on widespread tactical voting, young who haven’t previously voted turning out in levels not seen since the 1970s and this being spread across the country and not concentrated in University areas. This will be tough to achieve to simply stop a Tory Landslide, never mind a hung parliament. Labour winning a majority is the stuff of pure fantasy (needs Lab to be 12points ahead of Cons). That said, if the result isn’t much different to the 2015 result, it will beg major questions over May’s leadership and her ability to read the public mood. It will say something about her refusal to engage with ‘the saboteurs’.

Expect an increased Tory Majority but not of the epic scale of 470 they originally were aiming for.

I was thinking more Macron than Blair valentine, but remind me how many elections Blair won?

Ah there is the hitch you see. He did win more than one election, did destroy more than one country and did manage to, extremely dubiously, take us into the madness that is developing at the London Bridge now.
Welcome To the world of reality. He was not Labour. He was and still is a war criminal.

Valentine2 · 03/06/2017 23:00

We used to hang around the area during my uni days. It is full of people simply enjoying the city nights at this time of the night on Saturday.

whatwouldrondo · 03/06/2017 23:02

The nightlife is south of the bridge around the Shard and up north and east of the city. Pubs and bars actually in the City, apart from the flashy bars and restaurants on top of the tower blocks, close on Weekends. So yes there will have been tourists but not the massive numbers who cross the bridge during the week.

Lico · 03/06/2017 23:02

Watching sky news. Looks like a terrorist attack

WeakAndUnstable · 03/06/2017 23:05

This has happened south of the bridge. That's why the Shard is also on lockdown.

Lico · 03/06/2017 23:08

The hospitals are so full on Saturday nights . I feel very, very sorry for tge medics. I wonder whether they can fly wounded to Lille, Calais -a lot of empty beds there. Injured on both sides of bridge . Can only get Sky News . Nô signal ´´for bbc. You have all the drinks in hospitals on ssturday nights.

Bolshybookworm · 03/06/2017 23:09

I'm not talking about his policies though, or what he did in power, I'm talking about how he got it. I wasn't his biggest fan then and I'm not now, but he had buckets of charisma and more importantly he organised and unified the Labour Party (at the beginning, anyway). People listened to him, he was engaging, and prior to Iraq, respected. I don't deny that the Labour Party needed a shakeup in terms of policy but do I think Corbyn is the person to deliver it? No. He should be winning this election, not just keeping seats.
I don't necessarily blame Corbyn for this- one problem with Labour under Blair is that there were so many big hitters that the next generation of talent was seriously neglected and there just aren't that many great candidates anymore. One advantage of Corbyn Is that they might have a chance to shine again. This is probably a natural cycle in politics and normally I wouldn't worry much about it, but Brexit means we can't wait that long. Labour needs to be strong NOW, not in 5 years time Sad

Bolshybookworm · 03/06/2017 23:12

There are a lot of hospitals in London and the South East, I would imagine that they'll cope, even if they have to spread them over a few hospitals.

whatwouldrondo · 03/06/2017 23:12

They are reporting a van coming off the bridge into the crowds on the south side but also incident towards Borough Market.

Charmageddon · 03/06/2017 23:13

Shit news.
Sad

RedToothBrush · 03/06/2017 23:13

BBC have an eyewitness who is a BBC producer a slight distance away saying that a separate incident seems taken place. Borough Market. Something to do with a stabbing. Also heard about three people lying on ground who have been 'injured' by someone (he was very careful with words. Twitter is suggesting throats slashed). All had two people telling them there were two men dressed in black.

Guys is right in the middle of it plus Kings, Barts, Homerton, UCL, St Thomas's (who were so brilliant during the Westminster incident) are all in a couple of miles.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/06/2017 23:19

Maybe clearer to group polling orgs according to turnout weighting methodology for 2 choices:

  1. Young turnout weighting based on 2015 GE: ICM ComRes Kantar

Mean lead 11%

2)) turnout based on EU ref or weighted VI:
YouGov
Survation
Opinium
Ipsos MORI

Mean lead 4%

RedToothBrush · 03/06/2017 23:28

Police have confirmed they are dealing with two incidents and they have armed police on the ground.

Now Vauxhall too apparently.

lalalonglegs · 03/06/2017 23:52

Now something going on at Vauxhall (about 2 miles west as crow flies). Vauxhall is always heaving on a Saturday night - it has a huge gay scene. It's terrifying.

My daughter was seriously injured one year ago on a Saturday night ; fell down the stairs. Was not allowed to move her. There was not one single bed available in Central London (St. Thomas full, UCL full, Chelsea & Westminster full) mainly due to drunkards at A&E. Moreover there was no ambulance available. She spent the night on the floor until I could get a private doctor the following morning. I am afraid I do not buy how well prepared Central London hospitals are; they just do not have the resources .

whatwouldrondo · 04/06/2017 00:13

The Borough incident seems to have happened in Brindisa, Spanish tapas restaurant that has always been a mainstay of the market.

Seems like people throughout south of the river are being told to get away, "run" if you are worried in the words of the Met. Now Cauxhall involved.

Lico I have experience of London hospitals at night and I am sorry for your experience but I have been in various ones with myself or others with Cancer / treatment related issues and always the way has been cleared through the drunkards / those in police custardy

whatwouldrondo · 04/06/2017 00:13

Vauxhall

whatwouldrondo · 04/06/2017 00:18

I have experience via a support group ( that started on mumsnet) of the response in similar situations across the country and we really are better off in London than in most of the rest of the country. Some places are better, some are much much worse

whatwouldrondo · 04/06/2017 00:19

Vauxhall station open

whatwouldrondo · 04/06/2017 00:21

A few are better, most are much worse

RedToothBrush · 04/06/2017 00:29

No 10, have said that Donald Trump is being briefed.

He's just tweeted this;

Donald J. Trump‏ @realDonaldTrump
We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!

This worries me. Whatever is going on, is being used already by Trump for his own ends.
