Westministenders: Election Mayhem

Tick tock, tick tock goes the Brexit Clock.

Don’t panic, just don’t turn up to debates because you have talks starting on the 19th June and have to perfect the 100 page document relating to at least 750 international agreements that need renegotiating before then. Anyone who turns up for their job interview for that, is just wasting time.

If only someone hadn’t called a distracting election.

This election was dubbed to be about Brexit. Yet it is remarkable that we have barely had debate over it. No one wants to admit it really. We nearly got a consensus between Barry Gardiner, Nick Clegg and David Davis over it being a political not economic decision on Question Time on Thursday 1st June, but we are not quite there yet with the admission that the economy is toast. This means the addition money the Conservatives have promised for the NHS won’t be available but we can’t have this discussion. Its properly the fault of purdah. Instead the subject rapidly got skipped over. Instead Davis said that the target May had just set for immigration to be at tens of thousands by 2022 was unrealistic.

In post-election rumour has it that Davis is about to get a promotion to the FCO, whilst Johnson gets the boot. On the other hand Gove is also rumoured for NI and May loyal Gummer gets Brexit.

Meanwhile the 1922 Committee of Tory Backbenchers are said to be plotting the downfall of at least one of May’s guard dogs, Nick Timothy following the decision about the Dementia Tax and subsequent U-Turn. Farage also mentioned Timothy in his statement over the breaking news that the CPS are pressing charges on the Conservative Candidate for South Thanet (the former MP there), his agent and a Tory Party official over election expenses. It seems almost inconceivable that Timothy can survive a traditional Tory Knifing.

This is all as May’s leadership approval ratings are in freefall as the honeymoon is firmly ends, after the public finally got to see her create an army of strawmen as answers, in a barely concealed contempt for the public’s concerns. May’s reaction to a negative reaction? Go back into hiding from media accountability and get the Mail to do her dirty work.

Elsewhere the EU have lined up to criticise Trump over his hard ball attempt to renegotiate the Paris Climate Deal. May was noticeable by her absence as she’s trying the same trick over Brexit and is desperate to keep Trump onside. What is Trump offering us in return? Apart from a Brexit Opportunity to get stiffed.

As for the polls? Despite them, it’s difficult to see the Tories not making a net seat gain. For Labour to do well it relies on widespread tactical voting, young who haven’t previously voted turning out in levels not seen since the 1970s and this being spread across the country and not concentrated in University areas. This will be tough to achieve to simply stop a Tory Landslide, never mind a hung parliament. Labour winning a majority is the stuff of pure fantasy (needs Lab to be 12points ahead of Cons). That said, if the result isn’t much different to the 2015 result, it will beg major questions over May’s leadership and her ability to read the public mood. It will say something about her refusal to engage with ‘the saboteurs’.

Expect an increased Tory Majority but not of the epic scale of 470 they originally were aiming for.

Carmarthen East and Dinefwr - BACK to lean Plaid from Lean Labour PLAID/LAB (currently Plaid - JohnathaN Edwards

I drove all over the constituency today and I was amazed at the number of Plaid signs and placards. One or two Lab and one Con. I'd be surprised if Plaid lost it (and disappointed despite being a Labour member).
My own constituency is also on Red's list but I'm not calling it in public though I have a strong gut feeling about it.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/06/2017 18:47

Cabinet of Chaos, as usual

Hmm, May will struggle to reshuffle as she wants unless she gets that 80+ majority her party demand

BigChocFrenzy · 03/06/2017 18:57

I was intrigued on examining YouGov Others (2)
One of course is the Speaker, Bercow

The other Other iyswim - they predict an Independent, Claire Wright, will narrowly defeat the sitting Tory in East Devon:

That would be telling Grin. Right.

BestIsWest · 03/06/2017 19:08

My gut feeling was right last time too (sadly) and I also got Brexit and Trump right.

HashiAsLarry · 03/06/2017 19:25

I will be spending Thursday night at the local count. Very excited.

Out leafleting again today. Our bluekip mp came to visit us afterwards and spoke to our candidate. Arrogant twat doesn't cover it. He could slaughter some kittens and still win and boy does he know it.

A new poll suggests nearly two-thirds of young people are committed to voting in Thursday's general election. The proportion voting in the 2015 general election was 43%.

The poll was carried out by ICM on behalf of the Hope not Hate campaign and the National Union of Teachers.

Of those 18 - 24 year olds who are registered to vote and say they intend to do so, 68% say they back Labour

woman12345 · 03/06/2017 19:34

Jeremy Corbyn had supporters laughing and cheering, when he gave them a comical example of the kind of knocking on doors-type of campaigning he expects them to be involved in on election day.

He told them:

You knock on doors - you identify the Labour supporter and then you very politely go round at 10am on June 8 and ask them to vote. You go round at 12pm and remind them to vote slightly less politely. You go at 2pm and remind them they haven't yet voted. You go at 4pm and ask them why they haven't voted. You go at 6pm and say would they be good enough to go and vote. You go at 8pm and say it really would be a big help if you went to vote - and you go down at 9.30pm and say: 'For Christ's sake, get out of your house and get down to the polling station!'"

Outrage as far-right leader linked to Marine Le Pen spotted campaigning for Conservatives

Opponents shocked to see Janice Atkinson, vice-president of Marine Le Pen’s far-right European Parliament grouping, campaigning for Tory Adam Holloway in Gravesend

Some of the posters are dreaming here about how Corbyn is good, should stay on and public discourse has moved to the left. There is absolutely no evidence of the latter. Given the situation of the country re Brexit and the close referendum the very fact that there is not a strong chance of a labour win shows how poor Corbyn is.
He alienates many, many people. He comes across as someone who is a bit ambivalent about the Uk and its interests. It loses him support.
Labour were the official opposition party but couldn't manage to oppose Brexit. It seems because JC has it low down on his list of priorities. He has been having a fight completely different to the one happening. He has already been terrible for the country.
How much impact did all the left wing labour discourse do in the 80s when the things happening to the country were so right wing.

BluePeppers · 03/06/2017 20:20

woman that's because in a lot of ways the Conservatives are far closer to LePen than most poe think.
Ive had people asking me if I wasn't disappointed that she hadnt gone through the second round. Well NO. I dont like extremists of any kind.

But what that shows is that the ideas that the Tories are standing for now, all so proper etc.. would be considered far right ideas in other places. And not found acceptable.

I thik it should act as a wake up call. But somehow, i doubt it will.

In the same way, people associate ideas that are very communists (such as everyone earns the same) as being socialist/Labour, which are two completely different things. As if, in the UK, the only possible position is to 'on the right', even when you are on the left iyswim. This was very visible during the Blair years.

BluePeppers · 03/06/2017 20:24

Fwiw, our conservative did something like this at the last election.
Not goiung several times but they did round the houses to 'remind' people to go and vote.
He won.

So there is something to say about reminding poele to go and vote.... and gently convince them to vote for the right person at the same time

Posters mocking TM and the Conservatives

BigChocFrenzy · 03/06/2017 20:34

There is no point in a Tory-lite opposition to a Tory govt
Same as when the Tories lose GEs they don't give up and become socialists

Trump and Brexit have shown that voters must be allowed a real choice among the 2 main parties at GEs, not two different rightwing parties, one a bit wimpier than the other
Otherwise angry voters rebel and vote for anyone else offering change

Corbyn is just an interim leader - he'd be 73 in a 2022 GE and 78 at the end of that parliament.
Labour can do a lot better next time, in a post-Brexit recession.

Posters mocking TM and the Conservatives

There has also been a fair number of defaced Tory posters including people ripping them off people private property.

Some cases have been referred to the police.

Badders123 · 03/06/2017 20:42

I've seen an Anna soubry poster with "scum" spray painted over it

Zxyzoey31 · 03/06/2017 20:42

Depends whether you can make compromises to achieve some of what you think is good or prefer to make no compromises, let all stuff you are totally opposed to happen for approximately 15 years and then have to make some compromises anyway to have a shot of doing anything you think is good.

Charmageddon · 03/06/2017 20:43

Ironically the policy that caused the biggest stink amongst the left wing politicians was the social care policy - something which was in no way a right wing proposal.

Bizarrely it was the left that were so vehement about protecting the inheritance of the children of the better off.

Charmageddon · 03/06/2017 20:46

There has also been a fair number of defaced Tory posters including people ripping them off people private property.

Not just Tory stuff piglet, one constituency has had blokes in balaclavas running round defacing & stealing Lib dem placards & posting their lolz on social media.

(Its labour supporters btw).

Charmageddon · 03/06/2017 20:47

Also referred to the police.
