The Maynifesto is out (lets be honest here; other Manifestos are just exercises in dreaming). The rumours of what will happen post Election are in full swing.

The Conservatives are ‘relaunching’ their campaign after Theresa May’s single handed attempt at throwing the election, has needed an intervention.

Yet the reality is that May will win. And win comfortably, increasing her majority. Talk of a Corbyn surge is just that. Talk. He still is more than 5% behind and the excitement about how the gap has closed is getting carried away. Indeed it only helps the Conservatives to get their vote out. Corbyn also started from such a dreadful position, it just makes the effect look more dramatic than it really is and May was always going to struggle to get much more support after the local election peak.

The thing is none of the political parties are covering themselves in glory. No one is offering what people want. In terms of voters not being impressed by their leadership, I don’t think many are really happy and are just going for the best available option out of a particular bad crop. It does not bode well for the future regardless of who wins. We should be worried about the quality of debate and our representatives regardless of who we end up voting for.

Come election night there are going to be some particularly shocking results. The idea that there is a national trend is not right. This election is highly localised in nature. Which will result in these surprises to outsiders but perhaps not locals.

June 9th will make for a lot of soul searching I suspect. For all three parties. There will be leadership questions that remain unanswered and need to be resolved. There are still massive political divides in parties. Heads will roll and need to be replaced. Expectations and the reality have been out of line for all three in one way or another.

Yet all of this is a side show to an extent. Whilst we all scrabble around trying to work it out amongst ourselves, the rest of the world moves forward without us. And the clock ticks.

Merkel has set the tone for the next round of Brexit. It is regarded by the German political elite as ‘Trumpandbrexit’. We are part of the same phenomenon even though many see it through different eyes in this country. This lack of awareness of how we are perceived outside our own walls is something we will face head on at some point and it won’t be good.

Trump himself is up to his neck in scandal. And has risked our safety as a direct result. May might have held her hand but that relationship does not seem to be going well for us. We are between a rock and a hard place and are drifting out to see.

Global Britain has never seemed so lonely and isolated. The rosy future we were promised, becomes ever more a distant dream rather than a dawn of a new age.

Reality will get us in the end.

He ought to be paying more attention to thinking abt Brexit negotiations – that’s what I’m doing
She should have been doing this for the last 10 months, she should be able to spare an evening. Twat.

BluePeppers · 31/05/2017 16:56

And that's her job as a PM. Does he expect people whose job is different (such as JC) to do her job too??

RedToothBrush · 31/05/2017 17:03

Its not Jeremy Corbyn's problem if Theresa has poor time management skills. Shouldn't Amber Rudd be busy at the moment?

OP posts:
Eeeeeowwwfftz · 31/05/2017 17:05

Actually what is the situation on that front. I know Parliament is dissolved, but government continues. Does the civil service still operate its daily business? Would this include advising the PM on Brexit negotiations, or would that be on hold during the election period? I genuinely don't know.

I do know the YouGov projection is bobbins, though. 3% lead in overall voting intention? Yeah, right.

Still a full week to go and God only knows what will happen between now and the 8th. Win or lose though, May must feel like a dead woman walking.

Bearbehind · 31/05/2017 17:12

This is interesting from Sky

The European Commission is prepared to postpone the start of Brexit negotiations if Jeremy Corbyn becomes PM, according to a report.

Politics Home quotes a European Commission source as saying there could be leeway if the new government requests a postponement.

The fact that Brexit talks are due to start on 19 June, 11 days after the election, has been used by Theresa May to argue her case that she is the best leader to negotiate Britain's exit.

I really am geting the impression the EU dislike May personally.

I can see why though.

Charmageddon · 31/05/2017 17:14

Just seen Lady Nugee being interviewed - usual smug self (I swear she's half cut on cooking sherry most of the time...!!)
Apparently Jezza didn't just suddenly decide, he'd intended to do it for a wee while.

I do have a hatred for Jezza at the best of times, which is colouring my view but I do credit him for being much more personable & accessible than TM - however, watching thornberry just now has made me desperate to see Jezza crash & burn tonight - they're getting a bit too over-smug imo.

Postponing it helps no one. Still has to be done in now less than 2 years.

That is a bit odd on Richmond park / Twickenham too. The feeling on the ground is that Twickenham is closer than Richmond Park. Zac has made a lot of enemies, and added to them by standing again for the Conservatives. Obviously looking at the 2015 result you would not get how far his star has fallen as a result of getting it wrong on repeat.

ElenaGreco123 · 31/05/2017 17:40

Sorry, was commuting.

Tynemouth is very middle class, lot of university staff, but no students. It is considered to be good chance for the Tories. I am in the North Tyneside constituency and we are always asked to canvass there rather than at home.

Last time round Ashcroft poured money into Tynemouth campaigning like there was no tomorrow. Labour won though. It is still marginal.

Has anyone else got candidates who are parachuted in and has no idea about the area they hope to represent? My new Tory candidate hopes to represent our fishing industries. Good luck with that! He must have Googled North Tyneside and saw the North Sea in the vicinity.

‘Theresa May Has Totally F*cked It Up’ Tory Candidate Lets Rip At Dire Election Campaign

Notable the two of the Tories bitching are 2015 new starts: Cameronites.

“People on the doorstep are telling me: ‘She’s going after pensioners, she doesn’t know what she’s doing, she doesn’t answer questions on the TV.’ I’ve switched from saying ‘vote for her’ to ‘vote for me’. It’s hard to understand how people in London who get paid a lot of money made such a clusterfuck.

“People voted for her because of what they thought she was like rather than what she is like. It’s totally shattered the confidence of the parliamentary party.

Theresa May is toxic. Its her.

Here's another one from the article:
The candidate added that older Labour voters were still peeling off because of Corbyn. “Under-30s love Corbyn but they don’t care enough to get off their lazy arses to vote for him!”

Nice attitude to the young on display there.

Election 2017: The safer bet of a Conservative vote

The FT endorses the Conservatives. Despite Brexit being the stuff of basketcasery and being anti-Brexit in general.

Local paper in Wolverhampton has endorsed Tories.

Hasn't given the nod to anyone for the last 2 elections.

Could say it makes no difference but there are some significant marginals there that the Tories could take.

BiglyBadgers · 31/05/2017 17:56

I got a leaflet for our local Tory MP and it is a back to back Mayfest. Not sure if it was printed a couple of weeks ago or if he has just missed the memo that May is a disaster.

Peregrina · 31/05/2017 17:57

'Theresa May on Corbyn's debate challenge: “He ought to be paying more attention to thinking abt Brexit negotiations – that’s what I’m doing”'

I confess, I will laugh long and hard if Theresa May loses her majority, and the anniversary of the Referendum comes round and all she has to show for it is delivering the A50 notification and then wasting the next three months.

BiglyBadgers · 31/05/2017 18:02

I just checked our local paper website and the main story is a possible shock win for the lib Dems. It points out that it was a remain area and that the lib Dems got a majority in the area during the local elections. All polls I have seen put it as pretty certain to stay conservative. I think it could be closer than the polls suggest.

Tynemouth is very middle class, lot of university staff, but no students. It is considered to be good chance for the Tories.

Normally I'd say that's exactly who the Tories would be targeting. It has been in the last couple of elections. Working age middle aged professionals, particularly educated ones who commute. This time? Not so much. Instead the Tory pitch is for working class and slightly less well educated and older voters. Existing Tories probably will stick with them, but converts are coming from different places than previously.

If Tynemouth does come into play, then there is a real landslide on the cards (so worth watching for from that perspective), but not one seems to be considered on the radar seriously from anyone at the moment even towards the upper end of predictions.

It could happen, but no one is sticking their neck out on it.

Her face has been 'glowing' of late, right enough!

Zxyzoey31 · 31/05/2017 18:17

I do not think there is a chance of a landslide in Tynemouth. the working class may turn from labour to con but uni staff are generally anti brexit so not likely to vote con. It may all even out.

Zxyzoey31 · 31/05/2017 18:19

Tbf the sweating and drinking cld be linked to her diabetes

Figmentofmyimagination · 31/05/2017 18:21

If she loses her majority it will be so worth it for the 20 or so mins of satisfaction at the irresistible hubris, arrogance and incompetence it would signify - but then - aargh - she wouldn't survive a further 5 minutes ... and who would succeed - step forward boris Johnson, would be my bet. But then at least maybe he would so another one of his famous turnabouts and favour the single mArket over the end to freedom of movement. Fantasy politics.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 31/05/2017 18:38

Tbf the sweating and drinking cld be linked to her diabetes

It is very likely to be.

Unfair to pick on it no matter what you think of her.
