The Maynifesto is out (lets be honest here; other Manifestos are just exercises in dreaming). The rumours of what will happen post Election are in full swing.

The Conservatives are ‘relaunching’ their campaign after Theresa May’s single handed attempt at throwing the election, has needed an intervention.

Yet the reality is that May will win. And win comfortably, increasing her majority. Talk of a Corbyn surge is just that. Talk. He still is more than 5% behind and the excitement about how the gap has closed is getting carried away. Indeed it only helps the Conservatives to get their vote out. Corbyn also started from such a dreadful position, it just makes the effect look more dramatic than it really is and May was always going to struggle to get much more support after the local election peak.

The thing is none of the political parties are covering themselves in glory. No one is offering what people want. In terms of voters not being impressed by their leadership, I don’t think many are really happy and are just going for the best available option out of a particular bad crop. It does not bode well for the future regardless of who wins. We should be worried about the quality of debate and our representatives regardless of who we end up voting for.

Come election night there are going to be some particularly shocking results. The idea that there is a national trend is not right. This election is highly localised in nature. Which will result in these surprises to outsiders but perhaps not locals.

June 9th will make for a lot of soul searching I suspect. For all three parties. There will be leadership questions that remain unanswered and need to be resolved. There are still massive political divides in parties. Heads will roll and need to be replaced. Expectations and the reality have been out of line for all three in one way or another.

Yet all of this is a side show to an extent. Whilst we all scrabble around trying to work it out amongst ourselves, the rest of the world moves forward without us. And the clock ticks.

Merkel has set the tone for the next round of Brexit. It is regarded by the German political elite as ‘Trumpandbrexit’. We are part of the same phenomenon even though many see it through different eyes in this country. This lack of awareness of how we are perceived outside our own walls is something we will face head on at some point and it won’t be good.

Trump himself is up to his neck in scandal. And has risked our safety as a direct result. May might have held her hand but that relationship does not seem to be going well for us. We are between a rock and a hard place and are drifting out to see.

Global Britain has never seemed so lonely and isolated. The rosy future we were promised, becomes ever more a distant dream rather than a dawn of a new age.

Reality will get us in the end.

If the LibDems stick to their 2010 logic, there would be no deal with the Tories, just as back then they ruled out propping up a "rejected" Labour party.

Which really does leave a minority Tory party without a paddle.

General Election analysis: Backbenchers will demand changes to May’s inner circle after manifesto debacle

And, it's started, a bit earlier than I'd expected. Any sweepstakes up on her resignation date?

goldaspickledfruit May will stay for now. Nick Timothy was toast from the second the dementia tax was not discussed and then Tories were left looking stupid after defending it as May U-Turned. The May U-Turn has happened a few too many times and this is the result. But May will stay as they need someone to blame in a bad Brexit situation.

Corbyn has confirmed he'll be there according to Sky.

Yes. So it is like the 2015 format as Cameron didn't attend all of those either.

Only suprise really is Sturgeon isn't attending.

Young voters matter - but it's Kippers who count

Labour would have to win some of those particular target seats to force a hung parliament.

I'm glad corbyn is doing the debate. I was worried he would send Abbott who is a bloody disaster. Also I think his relative openness to the public compared to May plays well.

squoosh · 31/05/2017 12:48

‘The Tories have been conducting a stage-managed arms-length campaign and have treated the public with contempt. Refusing to join me in Cambridge tonight would be another sign of Theresa May’s weakness, not strength.’

He’s not wrong on that score.

squoosh · 31/05/2017 12:53

If she doesn't go she looks like a scaredy cat, if she does go she looks like she's only there because Corbyn has shamed her into it.

RedToothBrush · 31/05/2017 12:57

Election Data‏*@election*_data

Expectation-ometer doesn't favour Corbyn in the debate. It did the other night.

but

Marie Le Conte‏*@youngvulgarian*
So this is fun. May doesn't turn up tonight, looks like she's running scared. May turns up, she appears anxious about Corbyn's influence.

but reality is the Tory wobble was going to reverse slightly anyway, and Amber Rudd will take the credit and Corbyn won't come across well.

George Eaton‏*@georgeeaton*

Fear among shadow cabinet ministers is that Labour is piling up "wasted votes" in safe Labour and safe Tory seats.

I have still not forgiven them.
I'd forgive anyone, almost, who'd de throne this crew.

"Liar Liar" is number one. Great sunny day song.

Trump has just pulled out of Paris Climate agreement. Where does that leave NATO and UN? UK damned to irrelevance.

howabout · 31/05/2017 13:02

Bigchoc it was SNP votes which brought down the Callaghan minority Labour Government and led to Mrs T. Short answer version to your Tartan Tory Q of yesterday.

STV poll is interesting if a bit disappointing but plugging into electoral calculus doesn't necessarily give an accurate result because of 4 party politics and serial tactical voting in Scotland - we've had a lot of elections and it may well be becoming a bit of a sport.

Just for fun I plugged in 8 point bump for Labour in Scotland from 2015 (same as UK wide polls) and took from SNP while leaving Con per polls at 25%. Result was Con 8, Labour 19, LibDem 3 and SNP 29. That would be a good result from my pov and entirely possible.

squoosh · 31/05/2017 13:03

Trump has just pulled out of Paris Climate agreement.

So far, so going to plan for Putin.

howabout · 31/05/2017 13:05

All the tablet got sold. Sad May need to make more. Grin

prettybird · 31/05/2017 13:05

Roberston is a very capable operative (as well as NS' deputy) and more relevantly, he is actually an MP at Westminster.

I've seen people "complaining" about the coverage that Nicola is getting because it's a WM election and that she's not actually - and has no intention of being - an MP.

She can't really win either way Confused

ElenaGreco123 · 31/05/2017 13:10

Well done, howabout

Calyx72 · 31/05/2017 13:13

I was about to type what you said prettybird

Charmageddon · 31/05/2017 13:15

I agree pretty, I am not a fan of the SNP but I think Nicola Sturgeon is a very talented politician - I think it will play better for a prospective WM MP to do this one though, so I don't think she should be getting flack for it.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/05/2017 13:16

I agree, woman but there's been no collective cabinet responsibility - or even proper discussions about govt business - under the presidential style of govt we have had since MrsT (except for the brief Major inter regnum)

Every PM makes all the major decisions e.g. May is really her own Foreign Sec - Boris just gets the low prio leftovers

BigChocFrenzy · 31/05/2017 13:30

In the unlikely event of a hung parliament, it would imo be best to have a minority govt

Then all bills would need the support of some other parties.
So, stops arrogance dead and results in consensus & negotiations

Also avoids the smaller party in a coalition being demonized and decimated at following GEs - after the LDem experience, I expect only the DUP would risk a formal coalition

howabout · 31/05/2017 13:44

I agree pretty. I thought it should have been Angus last time round. Not sure how JC will approach him?

Zxyzoey31 · 31/05/2017 14:05

I have just received a mailing from my local con candidate. The entire back page sets out recent "shock" political events, ie they said you would not win, they said you would not vote leave. So do not think Corbyn could not be PM, go out and vote.
I was a little surprised. Maybe they are worried that con supports won't bother to vote. If the apathetic middle do not vote I think the result could be more up in the air.
Anyway I thought some might be interested.
