Westministenders: Theresa's Common People

She came from Oxfordshire she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied geography at Saint Hugh's College
That's where politics
Caught her eye

She told them that her husband was loaded
The press barons said "In that case have a rum and coca-cola"
She said "Fine"
And in thirty seconds time she said

I want to look like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to eat like common people
I want to sleep like common people
Like you

Well what else could Fiona and Nick do
They said "We'll see what we can do"

They took her to a supermarket
I don't know why
But they had to start it somewhere
So it started there
They said pretend you've got no money
She just laughed and said
"Oh you're so funny"
They smiled "Yeah”
Well we can't see anyone else smiling in here

Are you sure you want to live like common people
You want to see whatever common people see
You want to eat like common people
You want to sleep like common people
Like me

But she didn't understand
She just smiled and held Trump’s hand

Order that benefits get the chop
Tell them all to get a job
Promise to bring back the grammar school
Pretend you don’t think them a fool
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching the news talking about building the wall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
Whilst you blame it all on the EU
Because that’s all you can do

Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get Brexit through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh about leaving the EU

It’s the most stupid thing that you will do
Because you think that it is cool
You’ll call them a ‘lying foreigner’
But don’t say we didn’t warn you
You’ll regret saying we are better off out
'Cause everybody hates a benefits tourist

It doesn’t matter if you can’t do the math
With all those pockets that you grease
You’ll win the vote in Bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And wish they were all white
So you tell ‘The Big Lie’

Get THE flat above THE shop
Cut your hair and get THE job
Trick some mugs and hire some fool
Pretend you are not really cruel
But still you'll never get it right
Instead you're plotting late at night
About which ‘cockroach’ will take the fall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all
Yeah

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do what common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
As we plan to leave the EU
Because there's nothing else left to do

But ‘moan’ about how we don’t want to leave the EU.

France and Belgium. Different history. Lots to do with the old existing terrorist networks from Algeria which evolved into current network. Belgian gun laws were a lot more relaxed than other EU countries so were key part of the criminal framework.

One of the overiding things about the whole dynamic of ISIS is it's in essence a political movement with political aims dressed up as religion. It's actually political first (which also explains why there are a lot of coverts). People use the historic conflicts to say it's Islamic because that's convenient and lazy (and suits political aims). The reality is different because it goes so against basic principles of Islam which despite there being huge differences between factions they all tend to agree with (like murdering children = evil and not ever justifiable). The fact it has a media strategy should set off alarm bells.

We are treating as a religious thing. We shouldn't. We should try as political. It means you then 'other' in a different way.

Anyway I digress. I have sun stroke. My head hurts.

I came on to talk about this.

Mathieu Von Rohr @ Mathieuvonrohr
! Trump tells EU leaders: "The Germans are bad, very bad", will "stop" German car sales to US
m.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/a-1149282.html

Those German car manufacturers who are supposed to save Britain are evil.

You got to wonder who the heck had been talking to him about German cars just before the meeting. Did he get the wrong end of the stick!!!!

The ban on sharing information didn't last long then.

There was a 'breaking news' strapline running at the bottom of the BBC site but it's disappeared now.

lalalonglegs · 25/05/2017 21:39

Is this Trump's attempt to get back at Mean Merkel after she refused to consider a trade deal between Germany and the US (having patiently explained to him that he had to deal with the EU as a whole)? It would be fairly typical of his brand of score-settling.

Best bit about Trump Cars?

Bennett Lipscomb @ 80p
I'm sure the VW plant workers in Tennessee will be thrilled to hear this.
or the 8000 workers of SC that work in the BMW auto plant.
or the 4000 workers in AL that work in the Mercedes-Benz plant.

It's a reverse Brexit German car thing!

Sam Coates Times @ samcoatestimes
Exc: Times/YouGov poll would give the Tories an overall maj of TWO (down from working maj of 17) if swing repeated uniformly across Britain
Jim Pickardje @ pickardJE
that Tory-DUP coalition is looking pretty strong and stable

If this gets you excited don't be. This works well to Tory strategy. Will get voters out. That's the thing they are really worried about.

Poll is pretty Manchester too.which will motivate a few number of Tories who are disillusioned.

OP posts:
Eeeeeowwwfftz · 25/05/2017 22:38

I don't understand that poll.

Eeeeeowwwfftz · 25/05/2017 23:06

This page explains it a bit
yougov.co.uk/news/2017/05/25/are-tories-losing-ground-or-regaining-it/
I would imagine that under the circumstances any polling is unreliable.

2016 migration down, including net migration from Eastern Europe down to 5000, the lowest since 2004:

Not really Brexit-related, but politics-related... I heard what I thought was a good suggestion on the radio yesterday in the light of terror attacks. Given the type of threats that we now see, we should spend Trident money on investing more in intelligence. ie. spend it fighting real threats instead of possible threats. I'm not a defence expert (understatement) but this seemed to make perfect sense to me given that resources are finite etc. What do people think?

Peregrina · 26/05/2017 08:16

we should spend Trident money on investing more in intelligence. ie. spend it fighting real threats instead of possible threats.

Sounds quite sensible to me, but again, I am not an expert. More police and a better equipped regular army, and the shipyard building trident encouraged to build conventional shipping, sounds good.

prettybird · 26/05/2017 08:21

I think quite a few people have been saying this for quite some time.

Trident is a willy waving phallic symbol that allows the UK to continue to play with the big boys and maintain its seat on the Security Council.

It doesn't protect against the modern day threats of terrorism - previously al Quaeda and currently so-called IS, using suicide bombers and every day objects at public events to foment terror. It wouldn't protect against such an organisation producing a dirty bomb. It also doesn't protect against cyberattacks or bio attacks.

In my cynical opinion, it's the UK trying to hang on to its glory days when the Empire ruled the waves. It still hasn't changed its mindset. Sad

PattyPenguin · 26/05/2017 08:35

I wonder whether the opinions of armed forces top brass, and for that matter War Studies academics, differ from those of politicians on the matter of Trident and resource allocation generally.

twofingerstoEverything · 26/05/2017 08:36

Quite. Hence talk of 'red, white and blue Brexit' etc. All designed to appeal to a certain mindset.

Nor did the US having nuclear weapons enable them to win against Vietnam back in the sixties and seventies. I remember the shock we felt when we realised that the Americans were losing.

Two4One2017 · 26/05/2017 08:47

I'm no defence expert either but I'm not sure unilaterally disarming is the right way to go. Am going to try and find some research/discussion on it...however, we are now at the crux of this election surely. The ideology of TM vs JC is at the heart of it all.....and defence is pretty much the only thing that matters - if we are not safe, who cares about tuition fees or fox hunting?!

So for TM

  • likes to think she's strong and HO experience should be a huge benefit - but the cutting of police numbers will haunt her. Although here is an article which does not agree with that and lauds her attempts to get the police to reform after Hillsborough, Leveson, Plebgate etc.

capx.co/why-police-cuts-arent-to-blame-for-the-manchester-attack/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#link_time=1495780544

I'm not sure counter terrorism itself has been cut so much - more the community policing, intelligence gathering on the ground if you like. However, intelligence services are clearly overwhelmed with 'potential targets' - 3000 under surveillance - I read it takes 25 officers to watch one suspect. It seems they put money into counter terrorism thinking this would keep people safe on the ground...article from 2015.

www.cityam.com/229260/autumn-statement-and-comprehensive-spending-review-2015-george-osborne-promises-30pc-increase-in-counter-terrorism-spending-in-wake-of-paris-attacks

The security services have been doing a pretty good job in my opinion - we only hear about the plot that gets through not the ones they stop

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/manchester-bombing-uk-terror-plots-foiled-rise-number-security-services-officials-a7755471.html

For JC -

  • has voted against every bit of anti terror legislation since 1983 (abstained on 2) including against TPIMs - only Labour MP to do so
  • voted against the Investigatory Powers Act, which updated security services’ powers to intercept communications, despite it being official Labour Party policy to back it.
  • but claims he will be strong on terror?

This was Charles Clarke's (former Labour Home Sec) view on Newsnight last night - not very supportive of the Labour Leader but doesn't he sound wise now compared to what is on offer in this election?!

I'm sure he will pledge to increase police numbers, but I think there will be demand in the country for less fannying around with regard to suspects and more powers for the authorities, which goes directly against JC's ethos. Intelligence is the future and more surveillance of us all - just how much liberty are we prepared to give up?

prettybird · 26/05/2017 08:49

I agree that support for Trident comes from the same Empire coloured mindset that some (not all) Leavers had - and which the Conservative Government still appears to think it can seamlessly transition back to. As twofingers says, a red, white and blue Brexit - to go with our red, white and blue Trident Sad

Not all the military agree with the expense and opportunity cost of Trident - but it is very difficult for serving officers to make public statements in disagreement with the government.

http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2015/06/tridents-outdated-waste-even-military-say-so

Old but still relevant

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/4268661/Trident-nuclear-deterrent-completely-useless-say-retired-military-officers.html

The arguments against it - and the threats it can't address - have only been added to over the years.
Sad

Two4One2017 · 26/05/2017 09:06

Please watch this:

Here is This Week from last night - from 6.30 ish onwards to 22.30 there is a discussion about intelligence, the role of NATO, police etc. Very interesting and terrifying perspective on Afghanistan. Security will be the main issue for the next generation

Excellent

LurkingHusband · 26/05/2017 10:35

I remember the shock we felt when we realised that the Americans were losing.

Which is nothing compared to the shock some Americans felt. For many it was an existential moment which I suspect is casting a very long shadow, and may explain in part some of the things we (as non-Americans) just can't get. We're now what 2, maybe 3 generations from that ?

If the UK has anything to compare, it would be Suez, maybe. But that didn't take 57,000 UK lives, not last years.

Remember how Hollywood started mythologizing Vietnam in the mid-late 80s ? (Rambo, etc) ?

If you could pschoanalyze a nation ...

Charmageddon · 26/05/2017 10:52

I've been torn on Trident tbh.

I see the point of it, I think it served its purpose during the Cold War, I can think of reasons to retain it now; however, I can think of more reasons to get rid, so on balance I would be in favour of not renewing.

twofingerstoEverything · 26/05/2017 11:18

Nine countries have nuclear weapons. The rest manage perfectly well without.
